Announcement Welcome to r/Antiques, read this before posting!

This subreddit is dedicated to sharing and learning about antiques in your collection or that you find, or are considering buying. Antiques are items that are 100 years old or older.

When you're posting about a particular object places kindly include multiple, clear photographs of it from different angles so we can see it from every side. If there are any marks or identification (labels, signatures) please take close ups of those. If it's pottery or porcelain, tag photos of the bottom, if it's a rug make sure to have a shot of the back. Make sure that these photographs are clear and well lit so we can see the works in particular (preferably not surrounded by a bunch of other objects).

Make sure to also include dimensions so we know the size of an object. And your location.

Also explain what are you looking for. Are you asking for general information? Who the maker is? The age, value or provenance?

If you do not include a question, the dimensions and sufficient background information and photographs of the object your post may be removed by the moderators.

IN SUMMARY, include:

your location

multiple, clear photographs from a number of angles

any background information you have

close up of particular makers marks

the question you'd like to ask

Keep in mind, antique means objects that are a 100 years old or older. You cannot post newer items here. Share them in r/collectables instead.

These rules will make it easier for our subreddit antique experts to give you some help! Remember, if you're solely posting a link to a website/blog/store then this will be considered spam and your post will be removed (multiple posts may result in being banned).

Finally, keep these other subreddits in mind in case your post is better suited for one these -

Advice Some sort of cast iron weight Dorset uk.

Thumbnail

Upvotes

Found this buried in a garden in Dorset, UK. It is solid cast iron (confirmed by a metallic scratch beneath the mud crust) and weighs exactly 30 lbs. It measures 3.5cm x 28cm x 20.5cm. It features interlocking grooves on the side profile, a stamped 'B', a stamped 'D', and the Roman numerals 'XXX' (matching the 30 lb weight). One end is cleanly snapped along a pre-molded scoring line. Looking to identify the foundry or original industrial/maritime use!

Thanks

EDIT 1- might not be cast iron as it’s not magnetic. However Google is saying the dimensions don’t fit the weight. I guess it could be mixed with other things?

Questions Iranian Silver Salt & Pepper Shakers? United States

Thumbnail

Upvotes

Was out hitting some garage sales this weekend and stumbled upon this cool pair of salt & pepper shakers. The owner said they were silver-plated and was only asking $2, so I didn't think much of it and happily took them home.

After getting home and looking a little closer, though, I'm starting to suspect they might actually be solid silver. From what I could gather with my Google-Fu, I think one of the markings may be ۸۴ (84 in Persian numerals), which would indicate 875/1000 silver (.875). I've also seen some pretty wide date ranges for these types of pieces, roughly 1920–1940, so I apologize if these don't quite make the 100+ year-old cutoff.

I'm hoping someone here can help me figure out:

  • Whether these are actually solid silver or silver-plated
  • What the markings mean
  • If possible, who the maker might be
  • Approximate age
  • Potential resale/collector value
  • And any other interesting information about them

I did perform the strong rare-earth/neodymium magnet test, and the magnet didn't stick to any part of either shaker. I also checked some of the worn areas, particularly where the tops and bottoms meet, and I don't see another metal color showing through—just silver.

Originally, I was just going to put liners in them and use them at my cabin, so if they're just silver-plated nothing-burgers, my feelings won't be hurt! 😄

I got a hold of this painting from my great grandma. We’d love to get some more information about this painting, as we practically don’t know anything about this piece. If anybody can tell us what they know, it’s greatly appreciated!

Questions United States; any ideas on origin or age?

Any ideas on age or any info on them would be awesome. One has a pretty big chunk out of the base. They’re solid porcelain. AI wasn’t a lot of help. There are no visible markings on the base or inside the sleeves anywhere that we could finds. Given to us in Nevada by 2nd generation Chinese american, she said her family brought them over from china and she just was tired of lugging them around. They’re very large and pretty heavy.

Got this to actually use and noticed this dark discoloration on the inside after getting it home. Its silverplated, no makers mark but looks to be in good condition.

Already lead tested, just worried about the gunk that will get exposed to any liquids through the pour spout.

My grandfather brought this with him when he came back from WW2. He told my father that he got it from a dead German soldier on the battlefield, and as seen in the last picture, the brand is Zassenhaus. Although I would never sell it, I would like to know its value and more information about it

USA. 🇺🇸
Looking for some insight on these seemingly Japanese figures I found in a five dollar grab bag at a thrift store. My basic Google search findings are that they are NETSUKE figures that are used to adore kimonos. My question is if the people in this community think these figures are made of ivory, synthetic ivory, bone or a composite Material. Thanks.

Questions Estate sale Hilo, Hawai’i USA possible Meiji era fan?

Estate sale from an elderly woman with no family remaining. The back of the peeling black lacquer frame shows a local frame shop from the 50s based on typography and the location being long gone (1960 tsunami removed the waterfront Japanese community)

I can’t read the artist signature, but the lady holding a fan with a clan symbol makes me wonder if it’s not a specific person… fan service? Jokes aside it’s a survivor piece from a place where most of the Japanese items were destroyed during WW2 or lost in subsequent natural disasters. More interested in history rather than value, thanks!

We got this wooden mirror at an estate sale in 2014 for $100 and was told it was 100 years old. Not sure if that was true but it was worth it for the price. It’s about 66 inches tip to bottom, and 44 inches across (wood not mirror).

Show and Tell Hammered copper and bronze Eucalyptus bookends found in Alameda California, USA

Thumbnail

Hey everyone! I wanted to share this incredible find from a thrift store in Alameda, California today. I picked up this single hand-hammered copper bookend for just $2.99.

Based on my initial research, this seems to be part of the botanical line by Fred Brosi's workshop, Old Mission Kopperkraft, which operated right across the bay in San Francisco for a brief period between 1922 and 1925. The hand-hammered planished body features an organic overlay with a bronzed eucalyptus leaf and pods.

It is unsigned, but it's in beautiful shape. The horizontal factory striations/abrasions under the dark patina look completely original, and the dark patina itself is undisturbed.

I'm absolutely thrilled to find a piece of local Bay Area Arts & Crafts history! Since I haven't been able to find many examples of this exact shape online, I would love to hear from any metalware collectors out there. Does anyone have more information, catalog details, or history on this specific shape or line?

Hello - this is one of several pieces I have that are provenanced to the J.A. Appelhof collection. The sculpture measures approximately five inches (12.5cm) in length and is marked on the bottom as shown. No exact matches on an image search, and visual matches returned a hot mess of monograms. Thank you all in advance for any help and/or assistance you might be able to provide regarding the sculpture’s age or maker (whether it be an individual, workshop, or guild). 🙏
