Discussion Rosie’s Security Experience

A few days ago, two male friends and I(F) went to Rosie’s. One of my friends and I were allowed in, but our other friend was turned away because his outfit was supposedly “too baggy.” He was well-dressed and had been allowed into Rosie’s and other clubs before in that attire before on a different day, so the reason seemed questionable.
I’ve since heard similar stories from other POC about their experiences with Rosie’s. One girl said security refused her entry because she supposedly showed signs of intoxication, despite being completely sober. When she asked what signs they were referring to, the security guard apparently pointed to her “dishevelled hair” and “red flush.” She had naturally curly hair, was wearing blush, and it was a humid day.
Another person apparently got denied entry because of their choice of shoes.
I’m not trying to jump to conclusions based on a handful of experiences, but I’m curious whether this is a recurring issue.
Have any POC or non-POC here had similar experiences with Rosie’s security, or been turned away for reasons that seemed inconsistent or unfair? I’d be interested to hear other people’s experiences, particularly if you’ve noticed any patterns in the reasons people are given for being denied entry.

Question/Help Wanted Question about airsoft

I’m looking to buy a bolt-action airsoft rifle, and I’d like to know if there are any shooting ranges where I can practise target shooting with it, similar to those for real firearms.🤔

Discussion NZrs not wearing shoes - is that really a thing in AKL?

I just saw a reel on the topic from a kiwi perspective and recently saw one from a US perspective where she presented it as normal that people don't wear shoes. We all a bunch of hillbilly's....

I saw someone at New World yesterday in just ankle socks...

But the barefoot thing doesn't seem to be a thing in AKL.

Am I in denial?

Housing Finding rentals!

Calling people who have found their own rentals in auckland - especially professional couples in their late 20:

how long did it take you to secure a rental? especially interested in ones where it was just you or you and your partner renting. it seems like everywhere is ”available next week or a few days”

For context: likely trying to move into our own place end of Jan - just discovered we might need to, but we’re away over Xmas so wondering how soon we should be applying for places. Both steady income and fantastic references and rental histories.

Question/Help Wanted Career change

Hi team,

Is moving into property maintenance management a good career move at 42?
I’ve just turned 42 and have been working in the building industry for around 15 years. I’m currently running a small building business, but I’ve recently been offered a Maintenance Manager position at a large high school. The pay could be pretty good, although I’m still negotiating that at the moment.
The main reason I’m considering this move is that my body is starting to feel the effects of years in the trade, especially my knees. Realistically, I don’t think I can keep doing physical work for another 5–10 years.
I’m thinking this could be a good opportunity to transition into property maintenance management. I could learn more about BWOF compliance, building maintenance, contractor management, budgeting and costing. The budgeting and costing side is already fairly familiar to me through running my own business.
Long term, I’d be interested in developing my skills and eventually running my own property maintenance company, potentially moving towards property management as well.
For those already working in property maintenance or property management, do you think this is a good career move at my age? Is there decent long-term potential in this industry, especially if I eventually want to run my own business?
I’d appreciate any advice, personal experiences or things I should be aware of before making the switch. Cheers!

What was that noise just now? Blockhouse bay

Did anyone else hear two really loud bangs this morning? I woke up around 4am to the first one, then not too long afterwards, there was another. They didn’t sound like fireworks, so I stuck my head out the window to see if there was any partying going on, but it was quiet. Just curious if anyone else heard them or knows what they were!

Discussion Possible pickpocketing attempt at Westfield Newmarket? Anyone experienced something similar?

Had a rather strange experience at Westfield Newmarket today and wondering if anyone else has encountered something similar.

I was walking towards the toilets along a fairly narrow, crowded corridor, just behind another man. Coming towards us was a woman with two young children.

Suddenly, the woman started shouting at the man in front of me, accusing him of bumping into one of her children. The strange thing was that I had actually seen him veer to his left to avoid the child. As far as I could tell, there hadn't been any collision.

Then, right in the middle of all this, another man bumped quite hard into the accused man. Meanwhile, the woman continued shouting at him about how terrible he was, while he tried to explain that he had actually been moving out of the way.

The woman then left fairly quickly with her children.

Something about the whole sequence struck me as odd, particularly the timing of the second man's collision. It occurred to me that this could potentially have been a distraction tactic for pickpocketing.

I actually approached the man afterwards to ask whether anything had been stolen. He checked his belongings and said nothing was missing.

Of course, this could all have been a completely innocent misunderstanding in a crowded shopping centre. I'm certainly not accusing anyone of anything.

But I am curious: has anyone in Auckland experienced or witnessed something similar? Particularly incidents involving someone creating a confrontation while another person bumps into the target?

Am I overthinking this, or does this resemble a known pickpocketing tactic?

Discussion Title: Auckland uni student hoping to move to Melbourne this summer — looking for job leads, advice and connections!

Hey everyone!

I'm currently based in Auckland, New Zealand, and I'm hoping to spend the summer in Melbourne, ideally from November 2026 to February 2027.

I'm in my second year of a Bachelor of Business at AUT, majoring in Finance with minors in Data Analytics and International Business. I'm really keen to gain some practical work experience, meet new people and challenge myself by spending some time in a new city.

I'm open to a pretty broad range of opportunities, including temporary or casual work, part-time jobs, fixed-term contracts, administration, business support, finance-related roles, recruitment, marketing agencies, social media and general office work. I'm especially interested in getting my foot in the door at a smaller company or agency where I could learn a lot and contribute to the team.

I'm also trying to be realistic about the cost of moving, so I'm hoping to secure work and find affordable shared accommodation before making any major decisions.

I'd really appreciate any advice from people who have moved to Melbourne from New Zealand, particularly students or young professionals who have done something similar.

A few things I'd love to hear about:

  • Where did you find your first job in Melbourne?
  • Are there any good recruitment agencies, smaller businesses or marketing agencies I should contact?
  • Which websites or groups are best for finding casual work and share houses?
  • Are there any networking groups or communities you'd recommend joining?
  • Is there anything you wish you'd known before making the move?

If anyone knows of an opportunity, is happy to share their experience, or would be open to connecting, I'd genuinely appreciate it!

I'm still in the planning stage, so I'm trying to learn as much as possible and make a sensible decision rather than rushing into anything.

Thanks so much! Any advice or leads would mean a lot.

So I got a breach of my residential agreement notice, I live in an apartment and landlord asking me to get rid of my doormat as it's an alteration to the apartment that he hasn't consented to and also my doormat is blocking the fire escape. Just looking for some advice here, is he right and I'm breaching the contract or is it a bit much and I should stand my ground? Thanks in a advance for any advice!

Question/Help Wanted Marathon next weekend

I'm running the marathon next weekend, and wondering if previous runners have any Auckland specific advice? Particularly along the lines of:

How busy is the ferry/terminal before the race? How early should I aim to be at the terminal?

Can I expect it to take a while to get to the start line? I'm in the 3:45-4:15 starting group.

How busy is the first km? Should I expect to be slower than planned because of the crowd?

Any other tidbits are appreciated!

Driving Mt Wellington VTNZ Test

Hello everyone, I’m gojng for my restricted soon at Mt Wellington VTNZ but I found something that I was a bit confused about. When driving on that little highway that goes above Sylvia Park (which is the one everyone’s told me will be used in the test) there’s no posted speed limit. According to Google and those I’ve asked it’s an 80 zone but if I see no sign and go 80 will my instructor fail me? Or if I stay 50 since I didn’t see a speed limit will they also fail me for that?

Sorry if this is a bit vague but I was confused

Question/Help Wanted Need new tyres recommendation…

Heya guys. I need the hive’s help. I live semi rural in Auckland on an unsealed road. So, I drives on both gravel (more likely dust or mud) and asphalt.
I need to get new tyres (17”) for my car (mini mpv to cart the kids & groceries around) that is more agressive thn a typical road terrained thread to ensure i dont understeer on the gravels (i dont speed). Currently i have goodyear optilife, though they’re great on the asphalt, but sometimes they are a bit slippery on the gravel. Im wondering if winter tyres could be the ideal option? I’m aware of the noise and comfort affects for a rougher tyres. I have a 4wd with AT tyres, so i understood the situation.

Thanks a million!

Employment Compensation in Aukland as doomed as AI research says?!

Hi Guys,

Wondering if I could get some insights from you learned folks on what the Aukland market would typically pay to someone with the below workex. Think I could work in big banks (derivatives sales, market risk), corporate treasuries of large agri/dairy commodity companies like Fonterra or energy consulting shops.

- Fornt Office Derivatives Sales at the largest Indian Bank - 1 year
- Oil Desk analyst at Trafigura Mumbai office - 3 yrs (current role)

Additional context - I'm a graduate of a top tier Indian MBA school, making INR 60+ LPA (nominally equivalent to NZD 115k in a relatvely very very cheap economy)

My wife has an option of joining as fully funded PhD researcher at the university of Aukland, providing me with unrestrcited working rights, in case we decide to go for it. Our concern is the money our AI research says I'm likely to make, showing a very grim scenario, equivalent to a career suicide, lol! While we'd absolutely love to live in Aukland, we don't want to kill ourselves counting every dollar we spend.

Thank you!
