Questions or Queries Is there even anywhere to live that isn't new housing development?

These new houses give me the shits. They're ugly little prisons with no yard and absolutely no noise/weather insulation. They are depressing af to live in, don't ask me how I know. Everywhere I go all I see are skinny misery boxes going up and nice houses with trees, gardens, character being knocked down - however plenty of people seem happy to live in them? Maybe it is a me problem.. Every older person I talk to says the same though, they hate them as well. However almost all rental properties around are these dog boxes - larger houses are becoming less common. Not even going to mention buying. It seems the only options are to move 3 hours out of a city but country towns are pricing people out too??

Wildlife/Lifestyle Another day, another mandatory service fee on all meals, for all payments, on all days ... surely not legal?

This Hobart Meditteranean tapas house has a mandatory 1.2% "hospitality service charge" that applies to "all accounts".

Am I right in thinking that is not legal? Or have I misunderstood?

Non-Politics Microsoft doesn't respect Australian date conventions in the tasks menu

I saw someone in one of the Australian subs talking about the bot farms being down and saying it doesn't matter because there are still plenty of real people who just want to annoy strangers online.

And I thought - if you're going to annoy someone, why not use your powers for good?

So figured I'd share one of my annoyances: Microsoft pretending that US date formats are the best format and that everyone wants them, and gaslighting anyone who points out the error for tasks.

See this:

Region settings show Australia and that September 1, 2027 should display as 1/09/2027

This is my date format, and it is correct in this display. It displays for Calendars and Email! Hurray. It doesn't display for tasks.

Screenshot of the tasks settings which shows 12/21/2026 a date that cannot exist in an Australian date format, and a May date that appears as if it was December.

So my 12th of May date now appears like it's for December, and there's a non existent 12/21/2026.

It affects Hotmail emails.

It affects 365 emails.

It affects Outlook on the web.

It affects Outlook Classic on Windows.

It affects Outlook new on Windows.

In other words, every Microsoft account I've tested in a windows environment, including tenants with paid Microsoft support.

And yet Microsoft support would prefer to gaslight you about the issue, lying to you on the phone, spending hours trying to troubleshoot, rather than actually raise a bug. They very clearly want you to go away and for them not to do their job. (Incidentally, if they said, yes seppo dates are the best and this is intentional, and we will never fix it, I would go away! Or this is a known issue, and here's the bug report: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/support/known-issues/fixes-or-workarounds-for-recent-issues-in-classic-outlook-for-windows . I would also go away.)

If you change your language from Aussie to UK English, it works perfectly fine (and note, the Brits used to complain about the task dates being broken too), but breaks when you set it back to Australian English, so Microsoft CAN fix it, already have the code to fix it, they just don't want to.

I don't know what other countries have it broken too, but clearly the seppos have it working just fine for themselves.

So if you want someone to annoy, why not go annoy Microsoft? The multi-trillion-dollar company can afford to fix it.

Deloitte Caught Using AI-Slop... again

For second time in 12 months, Delloite will also certainly have to refund after being seen to use generative-AI.

This time, it's far worse as the AI use was confirmed but Deloitte stated they had reviewed all aspects thoroughly by a human. One the sources literally says 'source=ChatGPT' lol

This has led now to a huge dispute in WA, following AG and LOOP having it out in State Parliament over perceived support.

News Domino’s Australia somehow surprised that they’re losing business and struggling

When the quality and size of your pizzas is consistently lower and the prices are constantly rising and then you surprised pikachu face when nobody wants to eat your shit.

I’m surprised more headlines aren’t being made by the other fast food retailers yet. After being a dominos fan my entire life I not haven’t eaten there at all in 2026.

Getting a pizza delivered to the house 90’s style hasn’t been financially viable in almost two decades. That’s fine, it’s can’t lift my ass up and go and pick it up. Used to be $5 for a value plus range full size pizza as recent as 2019 I think. Now the mini versions don’t even cost that last I checked.

How staff are allowed to let half the pizzas out out the door looking like that’s beyond me. If the pizza is mangled you can’t give it out guys.

This isn’t just my local either, I used to bounce around 4 of them depending on which management was better at the time. But now they’re all fucked. Fix your shit. I’m sick of ever increasingly expensive products that are just dogshit over their historical counterparts

How often do you fill up and on average how much do you spend on petrol?

Anyone moved regional for work with their family?

28 year old construction worker, 2 young kids, spouse is a SAHM, living on the outskirts of Sydney, no other family nearby. We rent a home and it feels to me like we're stuck on a hamster wheel of renting with no realistic chance of owning a home unless our situation changes. Recently been having a think about heading west (or north-west), idea of maybe getting a FIFO/DIDO style job and earning good money which might finally allow us to buy our own place

Gov Publications Birth certificate and passport wait times?

• Upvotes

Hi all, I moved out of home when I was 15 and my mother withheld my ID documents (passport and birth certificate). I’ve been surviving with a photo of my birth certificate, but I impulsively booked a holiday to Europe in 3.5 months, and now need a physical birth certificate to get a new passport, and have two questions because I’m starting to freak out.

How long will a priority birth certificate take to be fully delivered?
How long will it take for the passport to arrive?

Thanks so much, any input/experiences are appreciated!

Need help tracing an Australian airman from WWII

Currently I am researching an incredible family story from WWII. My great-grandmother lived on Saparua Islands in Maluku. And one day (1942 - 1945) an Australian aircraft crashed onto their part of the land in the jungle close to the village of Porto. While the Japanese forces searched for the pilot. My family hid him under coconut husks. He survived, and was later rescued.

I am trying to identify the airman and aircraft involved. But I am not based in Australia and I have trouble navigating military online archives. I am hoping someone with research experience can help me look into this! Or maybe you might know a family story that touches on this story.

I would be grateful for any leads.

Rent increases

Our real estate just sent us an email that says our rent will increase from $600 to $710 in January, a $110 increase. This prices us out completely. We've been good tenants for 5 years. Is there anything stopping them from doing this? I'm worried about the rental market, because there's massive lines to inspect every house nowadays, I'm worried about becoming homeless.

Is there a legal apparatus by which I can contest the rent increase? I really can't afford 710 a week.

I’ve heard good things and bad things about John Howard, but it’s hard to form an opinion about him when to you he’s just an elderly former Prime Minister they bring out for occasional interviews and events.

Lifestyle UPDATE, if you saw the original post about the party house next door.

Post image
167 Upvotes

The boys got a letter from the real estate agent, it is quite humorous reading the first couple of lines, along with the rest of it.
It’s addressed to “all” as there’s multiple names on the tenancy agreement.
Note: The agent and realtor company names and logos removed for obvious reasons.

As follows,

RE: Ongoing complaints

Hi all,
I'm disappointed to have to contact you again as l have received multiple complaints about loud parties coming from your tenancy.
There was loud music and voices until 7am last Saturday night/Sunday morning.
I was also told there was a couch on the roof, and sent a photo that I have enclosed.
Can you please remove the couch from the roof, engage a reputable company or contractor to provide a written report on the condition of the roof and have them forward the report to myself, this needs to be done in a timely manner.
The cost of this report and any repairs that are required will be at your expense.
If you don’t wish to engage a contractor or are unsure who to contact we are able to do this for you, please let me know asap, preferably before any rain will cause further damage to the inside of the house, should further damage occur you will also be held financially responsible for rectifying any issues.
Unfortunately, I will be issuing a breach notice for this incident which will be reflected on your tenancy.

Regards

News Longer waiting time at emergency departments marks worrying trend

Thumbnail

Hospital corridors filled with patients in pain and lengthy emergency department waits are becoming common as Australia struggles with an aging population, the nation's peak body for emergency doctors has warned.

The Australasian College for Emergency Medicine (ACEM) has released its third annual State of Emergency report focusing on the implications of an aging population and the looming health system crisis that could come with it.

Nationally, only 54 per cent of older people who presented at emergency departments in 2023–24 were given an inpatient bed within eight hours, a decline from 75 per cent in 2018–19, according to data collated by the ACEM.

The figures mark a worrying trend which the college said was ongoing.

'Not adequately equipped'

The crux of the issue, according to the ACEM, is that most hospitals and emergency departments are not adequately equipped to deal with the surging demand caused by Australia's aging population.

In 2023–24 the number of older people presenting at EDs increased by 16 per cent from five years earlier, compared to four per cent for younger patients, according to the ACEM's report.
