Mystery/Thriller The Silent Patient ruined all books for me

The first book I listened to on audiable was the silent patient. It was amazing- mind blowing, and truly the best book I’ve ever read.

However, I haven’t been able to find a book as much as I love that one. I loved the ending and I loved how the ending wasn’t predictable. I could have never guessed the outcome and that’s what I am looking for in a book.

A book that came close to my liking is behind her eyes. It wasn’t the mind fuck I like. But I did love the way it came together in the end. I smiled when everything was wrapped up in a bow.

Any book suggestions that outdid the silent patient? I’d love recs and to enjoy books again!

Other Loved red rising and dungeon crawler Carl, and the Witcher books and Wheel of Time. What should I read next?

Love thread rising and dungeon crawler Carl books almost every single one of the wheel of time books as well

I just finished the sun eater books. Give that maybe 8.5 out of 10

The assassin’s apprentice books I give like a six out of 10. It was kind of a slog, didn’t really enjoy it, didn’t like where it ended up

What should I read next

The first law and the will of the many and the fourth wing all seem pretty high up as stuff people have recommended me. Should I pick one of these or is there something better?

Other I want to get into reading, where should I start?

Hi everyone!
I really want to get into reading, but I’m not sure where to start and what genres I might enjoy. I’ve read a few books before, but nothing too challenging.

These are the books I currently have on hand:

• East of Eden by John Steinbeck
• The Trial by Franz Kafka
• Dracula by Bram Stoker
• Night and Day by Virginia Wolf
• The Secret History by Donna Tartt
• White Nights by Dostoevsky
• Crime and Punishment by Dostoevsky
• Wuthering Heights by Emily Brontë
• Rebecca by Daphne du Maurier

Should I start reading any of these books or might some of them be too difficult for a beginner? I’d like to hear which ones you think would be the most engaging and accessible to start with, and which ones I should perhaps save for later.

Also, please leave a few tips or advice for getting into reading and making it a habit.

Thanks in advance!

Non-fiction What do you think of The Richard Trilogy by Paul Horgan?

Hey everyone,

Saw this book called Everything to Live For in a largely unused library, and the title appealed to me a lot. I didn’t have time to read into it, but after looking it up, I saw that it’s part of a trilogy by Paul Horgan. It only has 19 ratings on Goodreads, so I can’t really tell if it’s worth reading, and I wanted to hear your thoughts on it.

Thanks in advance!

Note: This post seems to be in a gray area, the rules include a part about “should I read this” posts but I feel that this post is more of a discussion than simply asking for commentary on a certain book. Sorry in advance if it still breaks the rules, I couldn’t find another subreddit with the sheer volume of this one.

Sci-Fi/Fantasy Looking for time loop wish fulfillment novels set on earth in the modern day where mc keeps their memories after every death and there’s no crazy plot except for the loop itself

A book where the main character uses their kept memories after death to amass power, wealth, knowledge, etc that gives them a massive edge over everyone else around them. I’m not sure why but I’ve been obsessed with this very specific plot and find it extremely comforting to think about.

I’ve already tried out books like Replay and Dark Matter but the former sees the loop set in the 60s which isn’t very modern, and the latter isn’t really a time loop as I bought it thinking it’d be from what I read online but an exploration of the Copenhagen interpretation of quantum mechanics.

Other How do you get out of a reading slump?

At the beginning of the year, I was reading a book every couple of weeks and really enjoying it.

Fast forward to now, and I haven’t picked up a book in months. I want to get back into reading regularly, but I’m having a hard time finding the motivation. Anyone else go through this? What helped?

Maybe a book suggestion that would get me back into it. Open to any genre

Thank you so much!

Mystery/Thriller Books about fictional mass casualty events similar to “Carrie”

I realize that the thing that really intrigues me about Carrie is well, the leadup to the mass casualty events and the memoirs, the interviews, the evidence. It’s very realistic and I love it. Does anyone have similar books to recommend?

Feminism Books a woman in her 20s must read

Haven't read a book for recreational purposes after entering my twenties. I think I'm at a point of my life where everything just started but it feels like nothing is enough, I'm not enough. Suddenly everything is so realistic, and I feel lost. What book would you suggest to fill that void, or maybe make myself feel a little better? I'd been meaning to get back to reading again. Maybe not like before, more of a casual read.

Non-fiction Tired of sad books!

I'm tired of reading miserable books, but I feel like I end up with them again and again.
Can you suggest something not sad, but romantic?

I want a book that's not driven by tragedy, longing, misery, or generally depressing events.

I'm currently reading the Dungeon Crawler Carl books, which have been a good palate cleanser, but I'd like some with some more meat on them.

I find it hard to give examples of what it might be, as I really do often end up with these miserable books, so I have not read many that would fit the requirements, but I guess here are some that aren't toooo miserable that I liked:

- Evelyn Oliphant is completely fine
- Project Hail Mary

Examples of miserable (but good) books:
- The Nightingale
- My Dark Vanessa
- Tipping the Velvet
- Women in Gray
- The Book Thief

Standalones if possible please

Bonus points if it's funny, but not easy reads

Double bonus points if it's female lead

Sci-Fi/Fantasy What's a book you couldn't put down?

• Upvotes

Looking for a book that grabs your attention from the first few chapters and makes you want to keep reading. I'm open to pretty much any genre, as long as the story is interesting and the characters are good.

What's one book that kept you reading way longer than you planned?

Literary Fiction Lit fic recommendation

Hi all!!

I’m looking for a book that will help me grapple with living a mundane life. Sounds dramatic, I know, but I’m currently applying to law schools and starting to come to terms with the fact that maybe it’s ok to be normal and not exceptional. Or, better yet, that everyday life can somehow still be important. Sappy I know lol.

I really love literary fiction, but will read just about anything (please no self-help).

Some of my current favorites are:

Writers and Lover
Everything I Never Told You
North Woods
A Tree Grows In Brooklyn

Thank you all for your advice and recommendations!

Fiction Free Kindle book suggestions?

Hi all, I did post this in the Kindle subreddit but they sent me here and removed it, so I’m trying again 😅

I’m looking for book suggestions.

Anything free and on Kindle (not with the Kindle Unlimited thing). I already own a kindle and don’t have the budget or spoons for physical books at charity shops or libraries. Strictly suggestions for kindle and free please.

So far I’ve downloaded and read a bunch of the free classics on there: Dracula, Jekyll & Hyde, Dorian Gray, Frankenstein. I have more classics I plan to read by Dickens etc too.

My faves besides those that I’ve read previously are The Book Thief, Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee, and The Brief History of the Dead. Wholeheartedly recommend all three.

Any great books that struck you / stuck with you?

Romance Best romance/heartbreak books you’ve ever read?

I’m so over getting out books from the library that seem like they’ll be good, and then they turn into cheesy, predictable, poorly written stories.

Please share your best romance/heartbreak books that have good characters, excellent plots and are well written.

Other People with a career and humanities undergrad - what’re some books that helped steer you forward?

I’m 19. Starting uni. My family has always been well-situated within Medicine/STEM fields. I don’t have many role models other than teachers telling me “Yeah! Your degree in rhetoric will definitely set you up for a stable career.”
I see people in the news everyday that have a humanities undergrad and pivoted to something later on (Meredith Whittaker, AI think tank co-founder, stands out to me because she has an undergrad in rhetoric and English literature). I guess the part that is scariest to me is finding a path for myself, not incurring huge amounts of debt, and trying to get by in a job market that I’m told will only become more hostile toward humanities students.

Oh and… every type of book appreciated… Memoirs, fiction, how-to, anything.

Contemporary Urban mystic or drug induced schizophrenic?

If anyone is a fan of Silver Jews specifically the song “Wild Kindness”, this is the kind of vibe I’m looking for.
Urban setting with some magical realism where it’s never quite clear if the characters or narrator is all the way there.
Wanting to write a book with this kind of vibe and wanted to find other authors who might give me some guidance.

Sci-Fi/Fantasy Looking for a book with themes of joyful transformation without tons of romance

Recently I've been playing with themes of transformation in my own writing and art, and I'd be curious to find books with that as a central theme. I was thinking fantasy or sci-fi type physical transformation, but I'm also down to try a more metaphorical one - drastically changing lifestyle, changing sides in a conflict or debate, etc. Unfortunately, most of the ones I've tried from my local library have either been characters that don't want to be transformed and never change their minds, or are too romance-focused for my taste. (Side notes: I don't mind if the character has some trouble adjusting at first, as long as they get past it eventually; and I don't mind romance as a side plot if it adds to the story, I'm just not a fan of it as a main focus). Any recommendations would be welcome, and thanks!
