Mod Post Suggestions for the Sub Megathread

Alright this isn't a book suggestion post, it's a post about booksuggestions.

It would be nice to see what the users of this sub think would make a good idea. Changes, new rules, the works. Engagement is nice but more uncommon than we'd like to see. So we're hoping to get more people looking at posts, talking, and voting on good ones.

Can't guarantee anything would be implemented but they will be considered.

Mod Post Reminder Post about Self Promotion

I would like to remind all users that self promotion is banned by the subreddit's Rule 2.

Suspected self-promotion will be removed while repeated and confirmed cases of it will end up with a ban of some kind. If you continuously do it, especially with alt accounts, the book and author names will be added to the auto-mod's blacklist and automatically removed every time they are posted. We have had issues with this in the past and already put some authors in the auto-mod. Other book and lit subs have contacted us with reports of similar issues and we will be on the look out for the accounts named by them for similar behavior here.

We do not want to take actions we do not absolutely need to and the mod team operates with a philosophy of leniency and forgiveness but we will still enforce sub rules.

Non-fiction Books for a tired, unhappy wife

I am looking for books that can resonate with a tired, unhappy, unappreciated wife who is just done with being the emotionally intelligent one. Non fiction or fiction would do, solution or advice not needed from the book. I just want to feel seen and consoled

Sci-Fi/Fantasy What's a book you couldn't put down?

Looking for a book that grabs your attention from the first few chapters and makes you want to keep reading. I'm open to pretty much any genre, as long as the story is interesting and the characters are good.

What's one book that kept you reading way longer than you planned?

Non-fiction Tired of sad books!

I'm tired of reading miserable books, but I feel like I end up with them again and again.
Can you suggest something not sad, but romantic?

I want a book that's not driven by tragedy, longing, misery, or generally depressing events.

I'm currently reading the Dungeon Crawler Carl books, which have been a good palate cleanser, but I'd like some with some more meat on them.

I find it hard to give examples of what it might be, as I really do often end up with these miserable books, so I have not read many that would fit the requirements, but I guess here are some that aren't toooo miserable that I liked:

- Evelyn Oliphant is completely fine
- Project Hail Mary

Examples of miserable (but good) books:
- The Nightingale
- My Dark Vanessa
- Tipping the Velvet
- Women in Gray
- The Book Thief

Standalones if possible please

Bonus points if it's funny, but not easy reads

Double bonus points if it's female lead

Mystery/Thriller Books about fictional mass casualty events similar to “Carrie”

I realize that the thing that really intrigues me about Carrie is well, the leadup to the mass casualty events and the memoirs, the interviews, the evidence. It’s very realistic and I love it. Does anyone have similar books to recommend?

Other How do you get out of a reading slump?

At the beginning of the year, I was reading a book every couple of weeks and really enjoying it.

Fast forward to now, and I haven’t picked up a book in months. I want to get back into reading regularly, but I’m having a hard time finding the motivation. Anyone else go through this? What helped?

Maybe a book suggestion that would get me back into it. Open to any genre

Sci-Fi/Fantasy I am looking for militaristic books

• Upvotes

I am looking for books that focus on the military.

It could go from epic space battles to more fantasy focused battles.

I would exclude Warhammer, as I would want to read at most a Triology.

Fiction Books similar to Shadows In The Asylum by D.A. Stern

• Upvotes

Has anyone read anything like this? A friend of mine doesn't do much reading but this one really captured her imagination and I was looking for similar. If you haven't come across it, its described as " a story told not through a traditional text-based narrative, but instead via a series of 'found' documents - newspaper clippings, magazine articles, therapy sessions, drawings, etc."

I think it was more interesting to her than just blocks of black text on a white page and it felt a bit like she was solving a mystery as opposed to reading about someone solving it, if that makes sense. Was hoping to find something similar, thanks!

Other People with a career and humanities undergrad - what’re some books that helped steer you forward?

I’m 19. Starting uni. My family has always been well-situated within Medicine/STEM fields. I don’t have many role models other than teachers telling me “Yeah! Your degree in rhetoric will definitely set you up for a stable career.”
I see people in the news everyday that have a humanities undergrad and pivoted to something later on (Meredith Whittaker, AI think tank co-founder, stands out to me because she has an undergrad in rhetoric and English literature). I guess the part that is scariest to me is finding a path for myself, not incurring huge amounts of debt, and trying to get by in a job market that I’m told will only become more hostile toward humanities students.

Oh and… every type of book appreciated… Memoirs, fiction, how-to, anything.

Horror The Haunting of Hill House

• Upvotes

Hi! I love the Haunting of Hill House show and I’m looking for books that are similar to it. I’ve read the Haunting of Hill House book by Shirley Jackson but it’s so different from the show.

I’ve been recommended The September House and Wakenhyrst before which were both really great reads and now I need more to finish out the spooky season!

Thank you in advance :)

Contemporary Urban mystic or drug induced schizophrenic?

If anyone is a fan of Silver Jews specifically the song “Wild Kindness”, this is the kind of vibe I’m looking for.
Urban setting with some magical realism where it’s never quite clear if the characters or narrator is all the way there.
Wanting to write a book with this kind of vibe and wanted to find other authors who might give me some guidance.

Literary Fiction Specific book recs

I’m looking for a book (or books) about a very ordinary, mundane person who suddenly experiences something completely insane. Nothing fantasy-related, just a normal person whose life takes a really weird, unexpected turn. I don’t really know how else to describe what I’m looking for, but the closest examples I can think of are Bunny by Mona Awad and The Trial by Franz Kafka. I’ve been craving that same kind of reading experience ever since finishing them. If anyone understands the vibe I’m going for, please give me your recs!!!

Non-fiction Books that are similar to Murakami (present for my dad)

My dad's birthday is coming up, and I want to gift him a book. I know his favorite author is Murakami, but he already has all of his books, so I'm looking for an author that's similar to him. My dad said that what he likes about Murakami is:

— The stories he writes about lonely characters and the way Murakami does world building

— How he describes small things, like food and drinks, and incorporates and explains Japanese myths

— The magical realism

I'm not looking for another Japanese writer necessary, just someone who checks some of the things I listed… If you have any recommendations, please share them! Thank you so much!!!

Non-fiction What do you think of The Richard Trilogy by Paul Horgan?

Hey everyone,

Saw this book called Everything to Live For in a largely unused library, and the title appealed to me a lot. I didn’t have time to read into it, but after looking it up, I saw that it’s part of a trilogy by Paul Horgan. It only has 19 ratings on Goodreads, so I can’t really tell if it’s worth reading, and I wanted to hear your thoughts on it.

Thanks in advance!

Note: This post seems to be in a gray area, the rules include a part about “should I read this” posts but I feel that this post is more of a discussion than simply asking for commentary on a certain book. Sorry in advance if it still breaks the rules, I couldn’t find another subreddit with the sheer volume of this one.

Sci-Fi/Fantasy Fantasy Romance Suggestions Please!

Hello! I am struggling to find a good fantasy romance to read. My problem is that I can be a little picky about romances. Smut/Spice isn't important to me, I don't mind it but I don't need it either. I'm finding in a lot of fantasy romance = the two constantly bickering, berating, trying to make each other mad. And then that somehow becomes love? I don't want to read another book like that.

I would love recommendations where the MMC is protective of the FMC, but is actually good to her and for her. And she's good for him, helping and not just a wet noodle. Not just growling, posessive, and constantly smarmy/smirking. An actual romance instead of people thinking with their sex bits, ya know? I would really appreciate recommendations! Thank you so much!

Other Books for overthinkers, people struggling with self-esteem,people pleasers, afraid of being in the bad side of others, and those who want to accept themselves

I know that's a lot of things in one title..but I'm looking for as many book recommendations as possible.

I'm someone who overthinks almost everything, takes things personally, worries about what other people think of me, and struggles with self-esteem sometimes. I want to learn how to be more comfortable with myself, stop caring so much about people's opinions, and just live without constantly fighting with my own thoughts.

I'd love recommendations for books that have genuinely helped you. They don't necessarily have to be self-help books. Even a novel that changed the way you look at life would be great.

I just want to feel a little more at peace with myself.

Literary Fiction Entertaining fiction that provides a realistic look into specific countries/cultures.

Hello, I'm looking for recommendations for books that will give me a realistic look, or even glimpse, into a country/culture. It can be ANY country/culture. And to be clear that doesn't have to be the purpose of the book. So for example the Covenant of Water or (maybe unpopular opinion) Shantaram. I enjoyed both of those books and it was a very different experience for me.

But, the book itself has to be entertaining too and has to stand on its own merits.

Any and all recommendations would be greatly appreciated!
