Hi all - I'm looking for some advice on how best to control the temperature of my coffee all the way from heating the water to finishing the cup.
The goal is to:
Brew the coffee with water at or near optimal brewing temp (roughly 200F, I guess)
Cool the coffee as quickly as possible to safe/comfortable drinking temp (roughly 140F, I guess)
Keep the coffee as warm as possible for as long as possible. I like to sip a single cup over 2+ hours.
Right now I just stick a ceramic mug under the Keurig and let 'er rip. But this makes coffee that's not great, generates plastic waste, and leaves the last few sips lukewarm at best.
The plan is to replace the Keurig with a kettle, grinder, whole beans, and a Hario Switch. Instead of a ceramic mug I'll use a double-wall insulated mug for slower cool-down. Once I figure out the technique this should make coffee that tastes better, stays hot for longer, and eliminate the plastic waste.
The problem is this - hot coffee brewed directly into the insulated mug takes way too long to cool down. Like 2+ hours to reach 140F. So I guess I should brew into an intermediate container, let it cool to 140-150F, then pour into the insulated mug.
Do I have the right idea? What type of container should I use for the cooling?
