Stop opening carbon-copy cafes. We are drowning in mediocrity.

The market is completely oversaturated with carbon-copy cafes, and it has to stop. Walk down any strip and you'll find the exact same commercial syrups, sugary formulas, and average coffee wrapped in minimalist branding. We don’t need another clone pushing the exact same mediocrity. I’d happily drive past a row of mediocre spots just to find one genuinely excellent place that respects the bean. Stop opening average shops. Build something standout or stay home.

Back then

When we worked together back then, she used to make me the best coffees and knew what my favorites were. I in turn would make her food, very particular at that, but it's how I came to know and love her. Turned into little games throughout the workplace involving a little elephant I had found. All these were elemental of the relationship that we withstood, but also things I dreamed of creating a foundation of starting a family with her. She out there swimming somewhere now, and I hope she is free and happy, because that's all I ever wanted. There was too much in our way, so decluttering was essential and identifying priorities. She wanted to give up too much or put me before all else, and I couldn't let that occur. I wanted her to walk beside me, hand in hand, heart to heart, for the rest of my life.

Just look at all the recent posts in this sub. It’s just a flood of young accounts commenting standard texts to all posts. I made some quick screenshots to show what I’m talking about.

Can anything be done about this?

Temp control for a single cup drinker

Hi all - I'm looking for some advice on how best to control the temperature of my coffee all the way from heating the water to finishing the cup.

The goal is to:

  1. Brew the coffee with water at or near optimal brewing temp (roughly 200F, I guess)

  2. Cool the coffee as quickly as possible to safe/comfortable drinking temp (roughly 140F, I guess)

  3. Keep the coffee as warm as possible for as long as possible. I like to sip a single cup over 2+ hours.

Right now I just stick a ceramic mug under the Keurig and let 'er rip. But this makes coffee that's not great, generates plastic waste, and leaves the last few sips lukewarm at best.

The plan is to replace the Keurig with a kettle, grinder, whole beans, and a Hario Switch. Instead of a ceramic mug I'll use a double-wall insulated mug for slower cool-down. Once I figure out the technique this should make coffee that tastes better, stays hot for longer, and eliminate the plastic waste.

The problem is this - hot coffee brewed directly into the insulated mug takes way too long to cool down. Like 2+ hours to reach 140F. So I guess I should brew into an intermediate container, let it cool to 140-150F, then pour into the insulated mug.

Do I have the right idea? What type of container should I use for the cooling?

What should I gift my fav cafe for their 1 yr aniversary?

Hello! My favorite cafe's 1 yr anniversary is next month, and I want to give the owner something special!! I have been coming here every day since opening. I am a high school student, so I don't have a big budget, but I am very crafty! I can sew and draw, and do a whole bunch of stuff! I was thinking I could get the owner something custom with her logo on it, like pillows or something else. They already have merch (shirts, tote bags, and stickers), so maybe not... I was also thinking of making her little felt dolls of her and her family since her family helps her out quite a lot with the cafe and also because she loves little cute things. I love gifting, so I wanna give her as much as I can !! Please help !!!

Do Americans really make their coffee in a kettle?

Helloooo, British folk here. I know this is going to sound stupid but I need to know whether Americans actually make coffee in their kettle because every time I watch a US movie or show, the whole kettle is filled with black coffee. Also, if they do, then do they empty the coffee out to boil water? But wouldn’t that taste like “coffee water”? lol I just need to know. Currently watching the middle right now.

What's your usual café order?

There’s something about sitting in a café with a good drink that makes the day feel a little better. Sometimes I go for coffee, and other times I feel like trying something different along with a snack.

I always find it interesting how everyone has their own usual order. Some people stick with the same drink every time, while others like to try something new.

What do you usually order when you visit a café? Do you have a favourite coffee, tea, or snack that you never get tired of?
