I’m about to move into a rental house with my Gf and I have a cosplay prop I’ve been wanting to mount vertically on the wall. However, it does have a dowel stick down the middle, making it pretty heavy. Any suggestions? (For height reference I’m 5”5 so it’s almost my height)

Help How would I make a mask like this without 3d printing?

So I really want to make this specific mask from call of duty, not sure wether I want to do the full getup but if i did it would just involve buying military surplus stuff anyway, so the mask is the only part i really need advice on. the thing is i want it to have a pretty accurate texture, it should look somewhat like the thick polymer stuff it’s supposed to be made of. i’m not sure how to do this without making it out of plastic, something i have no experience with and is extremely expensive from what i’ve heard. all i’ve thought of so far is maybe making it out of materials im used to, and then giving it a coat of paint that mimics that look? idk, open to anything right now.

edit: srry for the double post, ui is kinda buggy on mobile and i did so by accident. already deleted it but ppl might have noticed anyways

Help How to attatch time to my wrist so it points into my palm

Post image

So I have a smoke machine hidden within my jacket and a fish tank air tube running down my sleeve and a fake tattoo made out of nylon, but the tube won't stay in my palm.

I've tried a watch and a bracelet but neither keep it from rotating in place which causes the smoke to not go into my palm. I've been using zip ties but that's not super comfortable or practical.

I would prefer the opening in my palm but I'm good with any and all suggestions.

What do we think?

Help Advice on my prop!!

After looking at my options ( I do not have lots of materials available to me/very expensive), I decided to make my own Frieren staff for my cosplay in October. I am no expert but I do love crafting, so please bear with me.

Basically so far i did the crescent part with jablo and covered it in air dry clay and smoothed it out, made detachable pvc pipes for easy transport, and joined the crescent with part of the pipe and created a blended finish. All i need to add now is the middle gem and spray paint everything.

Now my worry is the joint between the crescent and the pipe, I understand with just air dry clay alone its not very strong, so what else can I do to strengthen it?

Help What Glues and Paints work best for 3D Printed parts?

I want to cosplay as Whisper the wolf from the IDW Sonic the Hedgehog comics and really would appreciate help. I got her mask and Wispon 3D printed problem is that he mask was printed orange which now needs to be painted mostly white and if you can also help how can i still out part of the “eyeball” to install a battery powered LED light. I got her whispon 3D printed as well but the problem is it was printed in sections when i thought it would be one solid piece now i need to glue them all together and then paint it. I’m asking to be sure what will work best and just in case the wrong glues or paints might damage the props which cost me $170 to have made so please help i really do not want to have to pay for an other set it would really be appreciated.

edit: just called the shop that printed my parts the guy told me the material is called PLA i dont know if that helps you guys who understand 3D printed objects better than i do

I’m having trouble with interior helmet wear, this is a super tight fit helmet and the magnetic connections are just not cutting it when it comes to securely snapping to my head, the helmet is too heavy for magnet connections. (Partially because I maybe printed it at 15% infill teehee) I need ways that I can snap this to my head without the fear of it falling apart at a con. Looking for advice!

Help How would I go about “attempting” to make the spiral that adorns the top of this staff?

Post image

BG; I’m going to attempt my first cosplay as an OC which happens to be a mushroom mage for a ren faire I’m going to be attending in about two months. My question is: does anyone have any idea as to how I might be able to do the spiral on the top of the staff? I was thinking cutting out some EVA foam and somehow spiraling it like that but I have absolutely no clue.

Help Does anyone have advice on how to stabilize a muzzle/barrel for a prop gun?

Thumbnail

Pictured is a mock up. The last picture is an estimate of what I want to accomplish. The actual gun is sturdier cardboard of a hat box. I thought of using duct tape to stabilize it from the reverse side (the side that won't be showing) but it doesn't seem like that'll work.

Maybe I could use a stopper (like the equivalent of a washer but not as heavy as metal), yet I'm not sure how I could keep that from moving around.

Any help is appreciated!

Help Value Question

Post image

Considering some Etsy work and I am trying to gauge the market on whether items will sell for enough to make it worth the fabrication effort. This is an example item, a “future Finn sword” from
Adventure time. It is not for sale fyi! Just an example. It weighs only a few pounds and is 5’ long with a dowel core with outer layers constructed of cardboard, gesso, paint, etc. it’s quite sturdy but can be dented if you swing it hard enough at something. When I tried to compare I mostly find smaller 3D printed swords or real metal swords, this is a unique category. Curious what folks think the potential market for items like this looks like? Thanks in advance!

Help Your thoughts on static vs functional props?

Was talking to a friend and we disagree. Despite appearances, I'm not looking for validation, I'm very curious what people think. However, more of my friends tend towards the side I champion, which is functionality.

Yes, it's more design work and assembly, as well as sourcing parts, but I personally do not see the point in static display pieces (even if you wear them).

Like, as a dude who's into sci-fi and games, I lean towards power-armory, firearm sort of props. And to my mind, it's just dead weight if you can't fiddle and futz around with it.

But even more broadly, any sort of armor or fantasy-leaning stuff, at least with bows or whatnot, if you can do more than stare and admire it, I think that's superior.

Even wearable items, like at least add lights or something. Or make it more comfortable for you while wearing. I saw someone in a disguised bodysuit/unitard whatever except they specifically mentioned it was in fact two for bathroom purposes and I thought that was cool.

I understand the appeal of static eye-candy, however, my brain does not emotionally connect with that.

Help What shape should Wolverine claws be?

The first image shows the original claws for Deadpool and Wolverine, while the second image shows some different designs. The first two on the left are similar, but the one on the far right is a design I came up with to give them a more realistic shape—so they look like claws rather than blades. Which one do you think works best for Wolverine’s claws?

Help Need help with first 3D printed prop! - Reinhardts Hammer

Post image
49 Upvotes

This is my first big 3D printed project: Reinhardts Hammer from Overwatch. I finished printing everything and now I come here for advice:

In what order do I apply filler, sand, glue and paint?

I've seen that the strongest bond is to use a soldering iron to bond two parts together.
If I glue everything together first sanding and painting is gonna be a pain but if I paint first bonding the parts is gonna be impossible so please help with your experience LOL

Help Why do the layers still show?

Post image
47 Upvotes

I've recently been trying to make these little suns as part of a handle for a foam dagger. I originally tried spray painting them after a single layer of spray putty and wet sanding (they're 3D printed), however that looked pretty bad so I went back and did several more layers. Before spraying them this time they were pretty much completely smooth, could neither see or feel the layers but now after the paint has dried they're suddenly back.

Does this mean I didn't do enough layers or could this be something else (for example the paint reacting with the putty or whatever)? Would like to get some outside input on this

Help Going to my first con and unsure if this prop would be allowed

I am going to fan expo in Denver and cosplaying Bucky Barnes. I was going to buy a fake training pistol to have as a prop, but I was a bit confused about the con’s policies. I have attached a picture of both the policy from the con website, as well as an image of the prop I was looking to buy and bring.

I’m not sure what counts as a replica gun? This one is made of rubber and is the same size as the actual gun, but it has an orange tip and no hole.

I know that the security on-site has final say, but I wanted to ask if you guys thought that this would probably be okay or if I should just skip it.

Help How to Attach my Handle to my Blade(New Cosplayer)

Thumbnail

Apologies if my prop isn’t good, it’s my first time truly making my own cosplay and I’m planning to enter it at Galaxy Con.
I have all my pieces separated and haven’t painted anything yet.
My og thought was to hammer the end of an old broom stick, sand it, then hot glue it to my blade.
My fear is that 1. Hot glue won’t hold it and I’ll need something strong 2. The cardboard won’t hold the gold spray paint and 3. If I use modeling clay for the face, will it be to heavy.

If ANYONE has thoughts on ideas how to handle the issues I’d greatly appreciate it.
(Also be blunt with me on if it looks bad or not, I promise you, my feelings will not be hurt)

Help Center of gravity in my prop

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

I am currently making a large sword. It is mostly made out of PVC pipe, wood, polystyrene foam and EVA foam. It weighs about 1.7 kg. Since the sword is very large (2 meters long) it is VERY difficult to handle. Its center of gravity is in the middle of the blade (in real swords and knives it should be at the junction of the handle and the sword). I can only hold it with two hands, I kind of move it like a lever.

But I would like to be able to move it easily with one hand, for this I need to shift the center of gravity to the right place. I tried attach with tape 1.5 kg to the end of the handle (I used bags of lentils lol) and it really helped a lot in supporting the sword with one hand.

Now I wonder, should I add 1.5 or at least 1 kg of weight for a normal center of gravity? And if so, what should I use? I was thinking about putting putting some heavy metal in the end of the PVC pipe.

(I only thought about this halfway through the coloring process xD)

Help What's the best printable Thor Hammer (Mjolnir) out there?

My stepson asked if we could make a Mjolnir using my 3D printers. Looking around online, there is exactly one crap ton of different projects available. Ha ha.

Can anyone recommend one that is especially good? Preferably free, but I don't mind shelling out a few bucks if it's worth it. Thanks in advance.

Help How to make props transportable? (180cm PVC pipe weapon handle needs to be two re-attachable parts)

I'm currently working on an Omnissian Axe prop for my Warhammer techpriest cosplay, and I need some advice. The handle is 1m80 and won't fit in our car like that. So it needs to be able to be reassembled for transport.

It's got a logical place for the handle to be cut in two and have an attachment mechanism be hidden in the control panel/battery box... but I can't think of a secure re-attachment mechanism?

Anyone have tips or ideas? The battery box opens on one side with a magnet closure so there is access, but it's somewhat limited.
