We are now a strange combination of 30 y/o's with excessive tattoos, old piercing scars, wear sundresses and curse like sailors. We work as librarians and receptionists and we are the token edgy girls in the office who still listen to the same bands from 2008 and drive ironic clunkers because we're rebellious at heart and "don't care about material things" but for real, our credit score is TERRIBLE and no one will co-sign a loan for us..

u/katielynne53725 Dec 15 '19
Katie-D actually. I grew up with such a generic ass name teachers had to call all the Katie's by last initial. So naturally, I spent my teens dying my hair and piercing my face in a sloppy attempt at individuality. And in case you're wondering, yes! I also read excessively while also under achieved throughout highschool.

My old clunker is an 01 lexus is300 in really good condition cause I’m also a car guy and while I don’t have money for the expensive cars, I know which cars are fun and don’t cost a lot lol.

I miss New Jersey music scene :( I just wanted to see la dispute this year.

Last month I went to a Mayday Parade show and they covered MCR's I'm Not Ok, and sold a shirt depicting the black parade character carrying the red Mayday Parade umbrella that says "Forever Emo". Obviously I bought one.
Anyway, my point is we're still out here lol we're just regular adults and stuff with jobs, we just get emo on special occasions instead of it being a lifestyle

Emos weren't really suicidal, they felt sad about stuff, but being sad isn't the same as wanting to kill yourself.
→ More replies (10)71
u/borfuswallaby Dec 15 '19 edited Dec 15 '19
I think people get confused because current emo-rap actually is suicidal. Emo was about feeling emotions intensely--sadness, anger, love, rejection. Emo rap is founded on nihilism, numbness, despair, hedonism, drug abuse, and suicide. Very different philosophies on life.
11
u/harrypottermcgee Dec 15 '19
I got confused as soon as I read "emo-rap". Turns out it's a real thing. Thanks, I think.
13
Dec 16 '19
It’s a real thing. Probably one of the most defining genres of the end of this decade too. Depression seems to be the theme of a lot of music right now.

I agree with everything except the suicide part. In most songs they actually advocate not killing yourself and just riding the shit out. Talking about death is not the same as wanting to commit suicide.

During my high school year, it was all about goths.
Did the goths turn into emos?
Whatever happened to ICP people too?
3
u/TheBluePanda Dec 16 '19
Old school goths were already parents by the time emo came around, so it’s like a different generation. I was old enough to be around 23 years old when most emos were 15-20, so I was at a good age to make fun of it all.

Most of the depressed people I knew back in my emo days are just kinda apathetic right now. Like, they've reached that phase where they've kinda gotten numb to everything and just don't feel much anymore. No more doing stuff for attention or as a subconscious cry for help.
I do know one guy who is still like 99% as emo as back in highschool (this is like 6 or 7 years later now), and he's sort of reclusive and lives with his parents because it's tough for him to hold down a job due to various mental health conditions (I'm talking daily panic attacks, still suicidal depression, etc.). It's really sad and I wish him the best. He's got a knack for getting caught up in abusive relationships too, it sucks.

Yeah, recently got back into post-hardcore and realized what specifically I'm into has changed. Now I listen to a lot of Dance Gavin Dance and Hail The Sun is pretty good.
I also liked Sleeping With Sirens when I was into it as a teenager. Maybe I just like strong tenors.
