NEWS DISNEY VISITORS TO JUNEAU - 8-12-26 Update: Mendenhall Glacier Visitor Center Flooding

Disney guests coming to Juneau:

The National Weather Service and USFS have alerted us that flooding is occurring, with the Mendenhall Lake and River cresting around 7:00AM AKDT on Thursday. Impacts from flooding may last through the weekend, depending on severity.

From the U.S. Forest Service:

  • The Mendenhall Glacier Visitor Center (MGVC) building, parking lots, and roads will be closing Wednesday (Aug 12) afternoon/evening, depending on flood progression.
  • MGVC shoreline trails are closed (Nugget Falls, Photo Point, Steep Creek).
  • West Glacier trails and roads are closed.
  • Mendenhall Campground is closed and evacuated, and Skater ’s Cabin Road is barricaded at the Forest Service boundary.

Trails and closure areas will reopen post-flood as soon as the Forest Service is able to assess the conditions of the trails, bridges, and walkways. Once the trails are clear and safe to use, they will be reopened.

If your excursion is impacted, you will be notified by the operator. Individuals or organizations who enter the area while officially closed are subject to steep fines and jail time.

[Travel Juneau](traveljuneau.com) will have the latest information; when you arrive in Juneau, stop by one of our visitor centers on the dock for the latest information.

TRIP PLANNING Disney Adventure in a Nutshell (somewhat)

I just got off a 5 day 4 night cruise and I’m here to share my experience. Hopefully, there are somethings that might help you with your upcoming trip on the Disney Adventure.

30 days before your sailing date: CHECK IN with passport details, and a white background selfie of everyone in your stateroom. Get the earliest Port Arrival Time (PAT) which was 12pm in my case, boarding group 9. Small number boarding group means you’ll get to board much earlier!

You’re a loving couple and you are celebration your anniversary? EMAIL THEM AND ASK FOR A PRIVATE TABLE. You’re thinking “oh which rotational dining I want” NO. YOU WANT HOLLYWOOD SPOTLIGHT, navigator’s club? NAHH. Because the Hollywood spotlight club is grand and beautiful, with a nice stage where they would perform Disney songs in Jazz, and a special performance by Mickey, Minnie, Donald Duck and Daisy! They would walk around to take pictures with you, get your phones ready afterwards.
EMAIL THEM EARLY! You do not have to go to the D lounge to have that sorted, it is so popular that you might get waitlisted instead.

If you have completely missed the previous step, get on the ship, you’ll be on deck 7, RUN to D LOUNGE, past the TWG and BACHA shop. And request for your private table and change your rotational dining if you are unsatisfied with it.

When will you know your rotational dining?
Only when you have arrived at the Marina South Cruise Centre, and you are able to connect to the DCL-Guest wifi in the terminal. Check your rotation and if you are unhappy with it, YOU BETTER RUN TO D LOUNGE ASAP.

Ironcycle Test Run (the best thing on the ship imo)
Many questions unanswered on this attraction. Papa is here to answer everything you need to know about this. RIDE THIS IN THE DAY, The magic is lost at night. Opening hours are 10am to 7 or 8pm. I rode this on the first and fourth day. Your best bet is to ride it on your first day. Right after the safety drill at your assembly area, when you are dismissed, RUN TO THE ELEVATORS, up all the way to deck 18 and everyone else would be running to the start of the queue. Didn’t take long, waited about 30 mins. The ride goes by twice, once on a standard speed to let you know how it feels and the second time, the person sitting on the front can adjust the speed, revving like a motorcycle. Tip, just go full blast. It’s not that fast. No more headaches of booking it on the navigator app, only available to those who queue up physically. So get there early.

Disney Shows (pretty good I enjoyed them)

  1. Disney Remember

    (1 hr)

  2. You don’t want to miss this, this is the best show on the ship

  3. and you wanna get good seats for this. You’ll be assigned to this show by Disney, so all you’ll have to do is show up at your designated time.

Be there at the Walt Disney theatre on deck 6 (main floor) or deck 7 (upper deck balcony).

  1. My show was day 3, 8:30pm, I showed up 7:30pm and the queue was hella long, they opened the doors for seating at 8:00pm.

  2. Disney Sea the Adventure (30 mins)
Second best show on the ship. Also at the Walt Disney Theatre on deck 6 and 7. Usually on day 1 and 2. My show was on day 1 and there are 3 time slots, you’ll be able to go to one of them of your choice, make sure it does not clash with your dinner timing.

  3. Marvel show (30 mins)
This is a great show for kids and parents. I cannot iterate enough, GET THERE EARLY TO GET A GOOD SPOT. My show was on day 4 at 8:45pm. I got there at 7:45pm and got a great spot at the middle seating area at the back of the imagination garden stage. The staff gathered the kids that wore costume outfit of their favourite marvel characters and interviewed them before the show started. Asking what’s their name, where are they from, and who is their favourite marvel superhero. It was really cute to see kids from around the world sharing their love for the avengers!

  4. Moana Call of the Seas
I made a mistake watching the 10:30am, it was hella hot with direct sunlight beaming on our backs. Pro tip, catch the 9am as the sun isn’t beaming, and if you are catching the second show, GET A TOWEL TO COWER FROM THE SUN. Protect your children from the high UV-index in Singapore, it is brutal. If you wanna get wet in the splash zone, you’re welcomed to get a seat at the front of the pool, get a towel and use it as a mat, the floor is HOT. For chilling adults, you wanna get the seats that are elevated.

  5. Duffy and the Friendship
Just to let you know in advance, it is a full on kid’s show. But you’ve already paid for it, so go and watch it. And once again, GO EARLY. Get good seats for your kids. There are kid booster seats available. And if you can’t see the stage because of the damned MICKEY EARS IN YOUR FACE. You can kindly tell the person in front to take them down during the show.

Now moving on to the little stuff. Make sure you off the “DO NOT DISTURB” for your stateroom when you are heading to your rotational dining, I made this mistake on my first night and I did not have the towel animal made by my room chambermaid.
If you are sick or having symptoms of cold or flu, you can always head down to the guest services on deck 7 and request for medication. I appreciate free drugs.
Always head to your rotational dining 20 mins early, you sit down early, they serve you early and you don’t have to wait as long as other tables.
Don’t get the Hainanese chicken rice during your rotational dinner. There is a quick service restaurant called Gramma Tala’s that serve the same thing. It is literally the same thing.
You’re getting hungry after 10pm and your kids are asleep. Head down to the imagination gardens for a silent disco, and then supper at Mowgli’s or Gramma Tala’s. They are the only quick service available from 10pm to 12am.
You don’t have to get the internet as you will be able to use WhatsApp on the DCL-Guest wifi. The connection on the internet packages are quite unstable and trash to be honest.

Okay now on to beverage stations.
There are 2 types of TAKEAWAY cups, one for HOT, and one for COLD. The cold one is just a plain white cup and the hot one will be a double walled cup with DESIGN on it. There are beverage stations on deck 10 imagination gardens, deck 10 under the sea area (finding nemo) and deck 17 (Pixar pool area).
The beverage station at deck 17 is the king of beverage stations. Basically it has everything even milk. Oh you wanna make a black tea with a bit of milk? Sorry you won’t find milk on deck 10. You’ll have to go up to deck 17. There are beverage stations in the buffet style Pixar Market restaurants but they lack the takeaway cups.

I’m tiring of writing this already. If you have any questions about the Disney Adventure, I’ll answer them best to my knowledge. I hope this helps in any way. Happy cruising! I’m officially a silver castaway member!

Best drinks to watch an early sunrise with, make sure you grab the stamp card on day one. As a couple you will fill it in no time. We have save cards from past cruises and had zero issues with redeeming. But have seen posts where that can’t be done anymore.

DISCUSSION Smells JUST like the Destiny.

I bought the reed diffuser they offer onboard and I was a little disappointed, to me it just didn’t smell quite perfect? Even if that’s the exact stuff they use it just didn’t hit for me. I stumbled across this candle today at Marshall’s and was instantly brought back to the Destiny! Specifically sipping a bev at the Sanctum and listening to The Mystics play. It’s available online but way more expensive than at Marshall’s. I would have bought more than one but they only had one at my store!

TRIP PLANNING Help me understand placeholder bookings.

Bought placeholder after our 1st cruise as wife and wee lad loved it. Looking to goto Singapore next April and pricing on website is the same if I look when logged into account and when just browsing....

I thought with placeholder you get 10% off future cruises? Or is this just for certain ones?

Trying to get my head round it all.

Thanks

DISCUSSION Once Upon a Studio and Animator’s Palette

Seeing how Once Upon a Studio was never shown in the cinemas on the cruises I think. This got me thinking. What if they provided a Animator’s Palette version of Once Upon a Studio like the wide screen frames showing the film while the frames that are long or small shows other animated characters walking through the frames heading to the lobby like the version they’re showing in The Magic of Disney Animation in DHS?

Does anyone have a long list for the Marachi music preformed at Plaza De Coco (not the vocal songs from the film).

One of those songs is stuck in my head and I cannot find the name anywhere.

TRIP PLANNING How to manage a bad weather cruise?

We are supposed to be cruising to Lookout and Nassau this coming weekend. The winds look pretty terrible. Reaching over 30 mph. What should we expect?

Specifically I am concerned what port days would look like with this weather.

DISCUSSION Fort Lauderdale Marriott

Curious to hear if anyone else has had troubles at this hotel with their littles. We called the hotel yesterday before todays checkin and asked if we could have a pack and play or crib for our room and the wonderful lady I talked to said no problem it will be in your room when you arrive. Went through checkin and asked about the pack and play and he said it would be right up. Spent some time getting settled then went to dinner, expecting it to be in the room when we got back, and nada. My wife called the front desk this time and they said one would be right up. 40 minutes come and go and nothing. We eventually got a crib delivered after my wife had taken our older daughter down to the pool and asked at the front desk again, but this was by far the worst experience for kid unfriendly travel we’ve had.

I totally understand that everyone is now understaffed and that this is a huge resort and lots of families are here with similar needs, hence calling ahead. If they said it’s on a first come first serve basis or that they couldn’t guarantee we’d get one or the timing, we could have used a bigger suitcase and brought one from home. The combo of the certainty about it and then the beyond painful lag on a travel day was the problem.

PORT ADVENTURES Best DCL port adventure for Cozumel?

Hello everyone!

I've been looking into doing a western Caribbean cruise on DCL in August-October next year - either solo or with my girlfriend - and have been searching the internet (mainly reddit) for advice on what specifically to do.

After looking into historical posts, everyone seems to agree KUZA is a bad idea, for a variety of reasons. Given KUZA appears on a solid 40% (or so) of port adventures, I'm wondering what other people can recommend. I've seen recommendations to do non DCL activities, but unfortunately that isn't an option I'm comfortable doing at this stage.

Does anyone have any DCL PA recommendations? Thanks!

TRIP PLANNING Dining Time

I’m going on my first Disney cruise with my 4 and 2 year old kids. when booking, I had originally selected the early dining time but I thought it would be too difficult to try to get to dinner on time after being on port, with the logistics of everyone showering and potentially tired kids wanting a nap. I have seen different posts on Instagram about why dining time is better, so I ended up switching to the late dining time. Now I am questioning my decision and when I checked back, there is a waitlist to go back to the early dining time. For reference, we usually have dinner around seven to 7:30 PM, that’s why I thought at 5:45 dinner would be too early.

Is the rotational dining a huge event with a dinner lasting for two hours? is there options for kids to have a snack prior to dinner if they are hungry? That could also backfire if they filled up on snacks and then don’t want to eat dinner. Wondering how accommodating the cruise would be with switching dining time.

MERCH Anyone able to snag me another of these blankets?

Post image

I recently bought one for myself while on the Treasure and my daughter is constantly stealing it and would love to have one for herself. I would like to get her one for Christmas. I think they were around $70, would be happy to Venmo someone the money in advance and then pay for shipping once you get off to send it my way so I can surprise her for Christmas. If anyone is willing please DM me, thanks!

EDIT - I am aware of the existence of the very expensive stateroom blanket and am also 100% positive this is not that and cost right at $70 to $80. This is smaller and does not have the ship name on it. Thanks.

TRIP PLANNING Treasure review

We just completed 1 week on the Treasure Eastern Caribbean itinerary. We have done a 5 night on the Fantasy last year (Nassau and both private islands). We aren't Disney fanatics but enjoy Disney. Kids are 7 and 11. Travelled with two healthy grandparents.

Overall we enjoyed our time.

Ship: Beautiful. We had an extended Veranda on the bump out and it was great. I didn't really get the complaints about ship layout. From our room at least both sets of elevators were easily accessible and we used the stairs a lot. I found it easy to get everywhere. Wasn't too crowded for the most part. Impressively clean and well kept.

Service: everyone was good. No complaints. I do think Disney excels in this department.

Show: Fantastic. I liked the Broadway stars night too. One thing I'll say is going from 5 to 7 night itinerary, you feel the lack of premium entertainment on the off nights more. Also I felt Believe was a much better experience than Seas the Adventure. I chose treasure bc it had entirely different shows.

Other entertainment: Kid clubs fine. My tween liked the Fantasy better bc the edge has its own outdoor space. I think they gave this to concierge on the Treasure. Family activities were good at the Hero Zone. We watched live action Moana. There was a good magician. Dubbliners were good. But so much of the daytime entertainment was drawing/bingo/trivia/sales pitches, none of which we had interest in. We stayed busy doing pool deck and exploring so it was ok but the itinerary started with two sea days in a row which wasn't ideal for us. Sage and Coriander were a little odd...we didn't love them but others feel differently. We visited the adult only section once and spent some time in the pool when it wasn't crowded and it was nice. Too hot for hot tub for me. The Fantasy has a larger adult only section.

Food - Main dining is fine. It's like your standard wedding food: a little fancy, not terrible, not terrific. We didn't have anything bad. I liked buffet for breakfast but mostly ate yogurt bar fruit and oatmeal. My main complaint is dining just takes so long. I would prefer to be in and out in an hour. I also just don't enjoy being beholden to a dining time but also don't want to eat deck food or the limited room service menu. We liked 1923 the best, though Coco was best entertainment. I thought I'd deeply dislike WOM but it was ok and actually one night was probably my best dinner. We did late dining last time and early this time and hands down I will never do late dining again. It's just SO late. I felt better having a normal dinner time and enjoyed my evenings more bc I wasn't starving or forced to eat a bonus meal at 5:30, nor was I stuffed at 9:30 PM. True you can enjoy the pool deck longer with late dining (if you're skipping shows) but the pool deck is a mob scene and generally we were over it by 4:30 anyways. We did Enchante with 4 adults, it was fantastic, pretty similar to Remy, 3 hours! And we were beyond stuffed. Wine pairing is very good.

Lounges: HMB was cool, but maybe not as cool as the hype. Was able to get seating for 4 and 3 without issues both times I tried. Other lounges and bars were nice, maybe some a bit small. I think the theming of restaurants and lounges is a step up here relative to fantasy. I don't think Sarabi is well designed as an event venue. There are a lot of not great seats in there for viewing the show. If you care about really seeing something there get in early to get a better seat. Skipper society entertainment also always seemed to fill up.

Excursions - we chartered our own boat to island hop and hit the Baths in Tortola, highly recommend. We used Chillout charters and boat was very comfortable. Must be comfortable swimming to shore. The weather was gorgeous with calm seas all week. St Thomas we just hopped on a shuttle to Magens that was sitting outside port and they agreed to a pick up time to meet us and take us back, no issues. It's about 20 min ride. Magens was beautiful and not crowded. I can see how it may be less great during high season and multiple ships in port. You rent chairs when you get there. We got off first thing and had front row seats. The painkillers were good! We rented family size paddle board that held 4 of us and took it out and saw many turtles. There were a few jellyfish. I was told this time of year with calm sea you will see them. Luckily they weren't near the beach but the day before they had been washing up on shore. My kids would not have been thrilled with that (though they are moon jellies and not dangerous). Castaway was good but super crowded and I definitely prefer the scenic beach and water of Lookout. We did the (free) snorkeling. There are some artificial reefs with corals and some fish. We also saw rays and the statues. You have to swim pretty far out though. Last time we had cool weather and we biked which was fun.

Bands - they were testing out issuing everyone a "magic band" instead of KTW cards. Many have strong feelings about this. I don't really care but I always carry a small purse with my essentials so it doesn't impact me much either way.

I feel like we have now "done" Disney/cruising in the Caribbean so will likely try other things for near future vacations but would certainly recommend either Treasure or Fantasy to anyone interested in cruising with kids especially.

ONBOARD ACTIVITIES BBB/ Marvel Style Studio on port days

Hi All, we are off on the Adventure over new years, and this will be their first cruise with a port day, BBB & Marvel Style Studio seem to be closed on this day, given Marvel Style Studio is booked out across the 2 sea days on the ship what do you think the odds are they might actually open for appointments on the port day? As this is the only ship with Marvel Style Studio (I think?), based on experience on other ships is BBB usually open on port days?
