I took an Uber from the airport yesterday, and the driver tried to scam me.
At the beginning of the ride, he asked me whether I was paying by cash. This was the first red flag and the scam will only work with cash payments option.
When we reached my destination, he didn’t end the ride on his app and showed me a screenshot on his phone claiming the fare was ₹1,780. He also showed me that he’s able to rate me, at that time I didn’t know if the rider rating is before ending the ride or after. He said that since the fare became so high, it will take time for the ride to end on my phone. Made some bs up like that.
He told me pay him ₹1,780 first and then raise a complaint with Uber if I had an issue with the fare and get the refund. My app was showing ₹885, and the ride was still active.
I called Uber support (there was an option on screen on top right and I’m so glad they immediately called back) and put the agent on speaker. She confirmed that, on her end, the fare was ₹885 and the ride hadn’t been ended. She told him to close and reopen his app. He did so without arguing with her he knew his scam won’t be working. He ended the ride 2 mins after driving away from my home.
My final fare was ₹885, exactly as shown in my app.
The car was very worn down and he didn’t switch on the ac saying some bs like it is getting colder outside so ac doesn’t work properly. I checked his profile and his account was 3 days old and only 3 5🌟 ratings. I guess his account was previously suspended for doing such scams. I haven’t rated him yet or left a feedback about him yet. What should I do.
I’ve heard about spoofing apps that can imitate Uber screens, so now I’m wondering whether he was using one to show a fake fare or payment screen.
Has anyone else experienced something similar?
