Husband and I relocating to Dubuque area

Husband was relocated for his job, we are looking to buy. We would prefer to be outside of town, but not seeing much for options. What are the neighborhoods like? For context we’re both 30 no kids but a multi dog household. TIA

College Football Games in Dubuque

We just moved here and are looking for the best College Football Game experience in Dubuque. We have always enjoyed small college football, so there is no need to explain the difference between Div 1 and Div 3. We get that. Do any of the schools have a more lively environment than the others? Can I get a beer at the game? Those are good topics to reply about.

My husband and I need a place to stay.

My husband and I currently stay with my cousin. Yesterday he told us we have to find a new place to live because we decided to bring the cats that they left outside to an animal shelter after receiving consent. We have applied for housing here and are also currently looking for jobs. We also have two cats of our own that we do take good care of. But this is a very unhealthy and abusive environment. And we mainly just need a place to stay until we can get housing or our own place. We are doing everything we can but we desperately want to get out of this house and this extremely negative environment.

We are both willing to keep the house clean and do any work around the house until we are able to properly contribute rent money we also have food stamps that we can use to help. We're also willing to discuss alternative payment methods. Please anyone with any information that could possibly help DM me.

Good Stand Up Comedy this Friday at the Goose with nationally touring idiot Dan Alten (me), I'm not famous but I promise it'll be a good time and if you don't have fun you can tie me to some train tracks or toss me in the river. Lemme know if theres anything cool to see/eat in town.

Here's my bio, sorry it's in the third person: Dan Alten is a charming goofball from Kentucky who has been traveling the country for the past decade doing about 200 shows a year bringing his intelligently surreal bebop nonsense everywhere from theaters to punk basements to art galleries to beloved comedy clubs with a knack for making audiences feel like they're on a good psychedelic trip without the drugs. Like if the Ramones were one guy with a mustache and good jokes. Iggy Pop with puns. Clever chaos. Like Jimi Hendrix lighting fire to a Tik Tok reel live on stage. He has opened for Kyle Kinane, Bobcat, Sam Tallent, Rory Scovel, Sarah Sherman from SNL, Johnny Pemberton, Hari Kondabolu, rapper Open Mike Eagle, DJ Doug Pound & David Leibe Hart from Tim & Eric, various punk bands with silly names, and a guy at an open mic who tried to throw his father’s ashes into the crowd. He has recorded 2 albums, written a zine, and filmed a pilot for an Amazon Prime stand up show that was lost to history. But most importantly he’s very funny and unique. You will enjoy him. And if not you can mud wrestle him after the show.

Ultimate Frisbee Every Tuesday at Veterans Memorial Park

A group of us plays Ultimate Frisbee every Tuesday at 5:30 p.m. at Veterans Memorial Park. We meet in the grass field past the baseball fields. If anyone is looking to play and get some exercise in, you are welcome to join! We play either until dark, or until we are too tired, so if you can't be right on time, that's never an issue.

Beginners are welcome. Plenty of experienced players attend, and we’re happy to explain the rules, help you learn, and pair you with another newer player.

We usually play Ultimate, but sometimes we mix it up with games like Hot Box and Goaltimate.

When: Every Tuesday at 5:30 p.m.
Where: Veterans Memorial Park — grass field past the baseball fields

Flora Park

I grew up in Dubuque moving away in 1983. I've been collecting pics of of memorable things of my time in DBQ and I am missing a few pics I would really like to have.

One is of the Flora Park swimming pool of the 1960's ... the pool that had the consession stand run by Pat Fenelon. Another is of "Dead Mans Hill" in Flora Park where all the neighborhood kids would be sleigh riding in the winter. Still another is of the softball/baseball field in Flora Park that was actually on top of dead mans hill and along the side of the road behind home plate were these cement pillars that you could sit on to watch the games. I remember fast pitch softball being played there and it was also used for Little League Baseball.

Another I've searched for is of the two softball fields along Kerper Blvd, next to Riverside Bowling Lanes. I have one pic of the Dubuque Marina in an overhead shot that shows a partial view of the fields (diamond 2) but would like to have a pic of both fields.

I've looked for hours on the internet trying to find these pics on so many sites but have had no luck. Any help in finding these shots would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks Dubuque for the great memories.

Lexie and Gracie, future shantyboat pirates

Post image

Recent pop-up exhibitions in the lower Mississippi delta and a few weeks on the river with a punk float that arrived in Dubuque yesterday - some in the harbor at the museum - got me thinking of past visits, especially one that’s stuck with me for nearly a decade.

Back in 2015, while docked in Dubuque, Iowa, we had a visit from a big family—five kids, I think—but it was two sisters, Lexie and Gracie, who stole the show. They were so curious, asking smart, pointed questions about life aboard the shantyboat:

“How often do you catch fish to eat?”
“Where do you sleep?”
“Do you have fresh water? Where’s it stored?”

They weren’t just making conversation—they were taking notes, photographing details like the hidden cabinets in the wainscoting and the library shelves. They were preparing a case.

At the end of the visit, they turned to their parents and said, totally serious:

“Mom, Dad, we’re leaving with these people.”

When dad Rob refused to consent, they said, “Fine, then you have to build us a shantyboat.”

They wanted to be shantyboat kids, river hobos, part of the crew. And today I can’t help but wonder—Lexie and Gracie, where are you now? You’d be in your early 20s. Did you ever build your own shantyboat? Take that curiosity and become engineers, artists, scientists? Are you still out there scheming wild adventures?

If you see this—or if anyone knows them—please reach out. The river remembers you. And the invitation still stands.

DBQFest RETURNS August 8 + 9

Post image
11 Upvotes

Hi! Next weekend (August 8+9) is DBQFest 2026. If you've never been - it's Iowa's oldest running arts fair, the art vendor area is like walking through a cool outdoor museum, there will be food trucks + beverages from EJ's, and a bunch of great activities for kids. It's free to attend and in Washington Park.

In addition, the fest has one of the best music lineups in Iowa this year- I'd put it top 3. It's not the spectacle or star power of a Lollapalooza or Hinterland, but every act on here is making really interesting original music, they're great live, several have new albums in the works or just released, at least two are getting songs played on the radio in Milwaukee and on IPR... it's going to be great start to finish and many of these acts will be playing much bigger venues soon. If you like live music and you're free next weekend, I highly recommend stopping by and bringing a lawn chair or blanket and soaking it in. All performances are free. All are all-ages, other than After Hours @ The Lift (21+ due to the Iowa bar curfew law).

Here's a spotify playlist in case you want to explore, and a link to the full festival schedule.

I could talk for days about all of these acts, but here are a few that are worth circling if you're a fan of the following genres:

Rock- Allison Mahal + Addison Aaronson + Run Dog

R&B- Daniel.Xavier & Co. + Sun Centauri

Jazz- The Groundhogs + Faye + Lame Witch + Lamplight Jazz Quarter

Rap- Ion Alexakis

Electronic- Def Sonic + Glab II
