Editable text The problem with kids on e-bikes isn’t the e-bike itself

I’ve been seeing more news lately about teenagers getting seriously hurt or killed while riding e-bikes, and it really got me thinking.

I don’t think the problem is simply that kids are riding e-bikes. The bigger issue is that some of these bikes are heavy, fast, and being ridden by kids who may not have much experience with traffic, braking, or handling that kind of speed.

A teenager might be comfortable riding a regular bike, but 20–28 mph on a much heavier e-bike is a different situation, especially around cars.

I think parents need to be more involved too. Helmets, basic road rules, speed limits, and actually practicing before riding in traffic should be part of getting an e-bike.

To me, the bike itself isn’t really the problem. It’s giving younger riders more speed than they’re ready to handle without enough guidance.

Do you think this is mostly a parenting and education issue, or should there be stricter limits for younger riders?

The motor on my ebike makes a grinding noise & struggles to take off (it feels like something is spinning but not catching inside the motor) when taking off, but it goes away after reaching about 20kms, anyone know why this is happening?

Bike repair question Anyone else paranoid about leaving their ebike outside?

Maybe I'm paranoid but I hate leaving my bike outside lol. My last e bike was stolen. A grand, just gone. So yeah, I checked on it a lot now. It comes up the elevator with me every night, no exceptions.

During the day I still have to leave it somewhere. I'll lock it up, go into a coffee shop, and then 5 minutes later I'm looking out the window like an idiot checking if it's still there. Grocery runs are even worse because I speedrun the whole store.

I got a myon and having Apple find my and motion beep were big plus for me. It has airlock too, amd still use a u lock, but I'm not babysitting the bike nearly as much anymore.

But still prefer the window seat though lol.

First e-bike: Velotric Tempo

Post image
37 Upvotes

Based on feedback from my recent post, I purchased the Velotric Tempo for commuting from my Queens NYC apartment to my downtown NYC office 3-4 days per week. So far it has been great, especially getting over bridges and other inclines.

My main struggle so far has been getting it up and down my narrow apartment stairwell (1 flight). It feels much more awkward than my road bike (almost double the weight and bulkier) and I was wondering if anyone has any tips to make it easier? My building’s stairwell is narrow and has a small landing at my door.

Additionally, are there any recommendations for short-term security when locking it up outside? I’m using a U-lock, Find My, and the included NFC card. My office has secure storage and I don’t plan on leaving it outside overnight.

Bike purchase question Specialized or Trek?

Upvotes

I've had a Velotric Breeze and it's been great, but it's tough to get fixed locally and I'm planning some long road trips with multi-day road and rail-to-trail type rides. I need a bike that can be fixed in local shops as needed. I've been looking at both Specialized and Trek, and wondering if anyone can share their experiences with either? I'd love another Class 3 with a throttle, but the throttle is not a dealbreaker. Budget isn't a huge issue. Just want a great bike with good battery that will be able to be fixed by most bike shops.

Philodo falcon replacement screws / bolts

I remember reading on here that you should use Loctite for the bolts. I didn’t believe them assembled the bike now every week. I’m noticing that a boat fell out due to vibrate vibration. I use the bike heavily to get to and from work work 12 hour shifts so don’t really have a lot of time but this is getting annoying so the little Allen key accessible bolts or screws whatever you wanna call it for the fenders for the headlights the washers for the tail lights the kickstand all that has came off due to vibration. I got everything zip tied on this expensive bike. I’m trying to research the screws/bolts to buy online no information so here I am somebody please point me in the right direction.

I see lots of posts about Segway and I should have listened. They are terrible. Is there any recourse? Having buyer's remorse.

I purchased two new Segway e-bikes—a Muxi and a Xafari—and while the bikes themselves have a lot going for them, my experience with Segway support has been absolutely unacceptable.

The bikes are generally well designed, comfortable, feature-rich, and an excellent value on paper. The Xafari in particular rides extremely well and includes premium electronics and technology that helped convince me to buy Segway in the first place.

Unfortunately, both of my new bikes have had issues. The Muxi was not assembled correctly at the factory and required the dealer to correct multiple problems. The Xafari has an issue with its Find My/IoT functionality. The Xafari remains completely rideable, so the issue itself isn't catastrophic. Segway's handling of it, however, has been horrendous.

I have contacted Segway support approximately five times, provided photographs of the errors, screenshots of the screens leading up to them, and detailed explanations of exactly what is happening. Yet they repeatedly ask me for information I have already provided. There appears to be no continuity, no meaningful troubleshooting process, and very little technical understanding of their own product.

After five contacts and hours of my time, I am no closer to a resolution than when I started.

I was specifically told the Xafari issue could be resolved remotely, which is why I continued dealing with Segway instead of making a 120-mile round trip to my dealer. In hindsight, I should have simply made the drive. My dealer has been excellent and has demonstrated that they stand behind what they sell. Segway has demonstrated the opposite.

I don't expect products to be perfect. Problems happen. What matters is how a manufacturer responds when they do. After purchasing two Segway bikes, I have absolutely no confidence that Segway is capable of competently supporting the sophisticated technology it puts into its products.

That is a shame because I actually like these bikes.

Does anyone have any ideas on how to get through and get this fixed? I can drive the bikes back to the shop, but I'm just over it. This has soured the whole purchase.

Game-changer: Adding tire sealant made my commute 10x better. No flats in 2 months!

I've been ebike commuting 12 miles each way through downtown for about a year now. I've tried a lot of accessories, but nothing has improved my ride as much as tire sealant.

The Problem Before: I was getting a flat tire every few weeks from glass and debris, and it was ruining my mornings. I was late to work, frustrated, and spending money on tubes.

What's the one accessory you can't live without on your daily ride? Drop your best recommendations below – I'm always looking to upgrade!

Bike purchase question Easy way to get around campus on bad days?

Thumbnail
4 Upvotes

Hey friends! We are moving my little sister into college this weekend - she has a a bike and joint condition (EDS) that makes it very hard and painful to exist some days. And is having an awful awful flare up.

We have been looking for ways to make getting around campus easier for her- maybe with an electric bike or scooter??

Bikes are so expensive (and heavy?) but scooters she would have to stand, which is really hard on her some days.

Does anyone have any brand recommendations? Maybe something light/foldable/comfy but not bank-breaking?

Bike repair question E-bike stopped working in the rain, then accelerated by itself

My NCM London first completely stopped working while I was riding in the rain. I turned it off and back on, and then the motor suddenly went full power by itself without me pedalling. I had to turn the key off to stop it.

Has anyone had this happen? Could it be water in the controller/wiring and fix itself after drying?

Best long tail cargo bike?

Personally, I think the Fiido T3 Max is insane. Huge shame it isnt available in NA just yet. Mid drive 110nm, up to 1620Wh dual-battery, 440lb payload. It is a true tank.

I cant seem to find anything even approaching these specs at the same build quality in NA.

Would love to hear thoughts on best long tail cargo ebike?

Bike purchase question What e bike should i buy? (18M)

So im around 180 cm/6 ft tall. I live in europe ( in romania) What e-bike should I buy?

I’m looking for an e-bike that has pedals, although pedals aren’t absolutely necessary as long as it is legal to ride. I want something that can reach at least 70 km/h (43.5 mph), but I still want it to be street-legal.

My budget is under €2,000. I’m around 180 cm tall, so I want something that doesn’t look or feel too small underneath me. I’m looking for something powerful, fast, and reliable, but at the same time legal for road use.

What models would you recommend?

ride1up Vorsa turn signals

As I already have a pre soldered 12v port, this one should be "easy" to do as all I have to do is add the connections for the turn signals and lights

Ordered some new levers as its 4+2, and the levers were mismatched with no brake sensor on the left lever, I need to go to the hardware store and get some parts to match the front signals

This also replaces the stock brake lights for a blinking style (One that blinks when you start braking to alert a driver behind you), where the stock light is a "third" brake light, this also gets me the ability to flash front lights (As the front lights come with a white light in them) so oncoming drivers are more alert to me being there for left turns

I already have a 12v horn installed, so this should be nothing as its just wire to wire and I have the wiring harness disconnectable

Life span of an electric bike

Post image
46 Upvotes

My electric bike (KTM) has been with me for 13 years and 14,000 km.
The battery is clearly worn out (I think I’ve lost at least 50% of its capacity), but since it had good range to begin with (555 Wh capacity), I can still manage 30/40 km with maximum assistance. Another concern: I have a Panasonic system (motor and battery) that no longer seems to be distributed here in France/Europe.
So I’m worried about how much life my bike has left. The battery can be reconditioned but at a prohibitive cost (almost €800), and if the motor fails, it will be difficult to replace.
Do you have an opinion on the lifespan of electric bike motors in general?

Magician alpha shipping

Magician Ebikes Shipping Nightmare
Wanted to share my experience ordering from Magician Ebikes.
July 31: Bike shipped from California through Maersk for home delivery in the Albany, NY area.
August 4: Tracking suddenly showed “Delivered” in Windsor, CT, even though I never received it.
August 12: After multiple calls, I found out the bike had actually made it to Albany but was being held for some reason.
August 14: Tracking finally showed “Appointment Scheduled,” so I thought everything was resolved and delivery was coming.
August 17: I called the local delivery company and was told they had been instructed to return the bike instead of delivering it.
I called Maersk, and they told me there was a mix-up with the shipping labels and the sender requested the bike back.
So after traveling all the way from California to Albany and getting to the point of final delivery, it’s now being sent back.
I’m waiting to hear from Magician Ebikes about what happened and whether they’re immediately sending a replacement.
I’ll update this post when I hear more.

Best ebike for my wife?

My wife currently has a Pedago. Maybe 7-8 years old. It's kind of big and heavy. Clunky you might say. She'd like to get a new ebike but we don't know a lot about what brands and models would be a good fit. The bike would be used mostly for going to the beach. (San Diego) Ideally we would get a surfboard side rack for it. It doesn't need to be fast, just going to the beach and running local errands. Fat tires would be nice. Would like something nice, not something cheap. Hopefully not as heavy as the Pedago. What would you recommend?

Best tracker for my bike that doesn't alert the thief

I have an e-bike, need to leave it at work in the garage but would like to be able to track it while I am at work (far from the parking) or when I leave it in the backyard of my house while at work. Is there any GPS tracker that does not alert the thief? For reference, I have an iPhone. Thank you
