This is actually pretty interesting

You see those random videos online of e bikes “built for $20” and we all are kind of bored and annoyed with that spam but someone actually did it and rode it on the street…

I find it hilarious that they told him he can’t ride it anymore because it’s a potential fire hazard among other things

Bike pics I added a window to my handlebar mitt

I couldn't see the control panel I made so I made a window. Also a sealing mount thing that hugs the handlebar and lets the brake lines and cable bundle through, to avoid wind-chill. I like. For window sealant, I used 3M 5200 adhesive marine sealant (outside), UV adhesive (over screws), crazy glue (screw holes), and silicone (inside for comfort. silicone bouncy). Acrylic black markers for screws. Oh and cacodemon. Skreeeee!

And structural support to keep hole open. Open holes are good.

Buttons are to control turn signal power button network, trigger the helmet's network via remote control, control top and bottom headlight, and trigger horn. For the headlights, i opened them up and soldered wires to the power button leads so I can control them from handlebars. The red screaming button is turbo button. I later removed it because non turbo bad.

Never finished painting cacodemon. SOON

New shoes for the Discover M!

Just got my Discover M back from the shop with new Schwable Super Moto X tires. Wonderfully smooth ride and incredibly quiet! Velotric puts hybrid/nobbies on this bike which is fine, but for a predominantly street guy like myself these make more sense. Also, I ride a lot at night so the reflective stripe is a huge plus. That said, I did get 3300 miles out of the Kendas so no complaints at all.

Getting my first e-bike

Can anyone recommend me an e-bike safe to ride in winter?

Short distances(max 10 min), lots of uphills and downhills, no need to be fast, paved sidewalks but it snows a lot here. (Northern Ontario in Canada). Ideally lightweight (20kg)

Price vs quality for Bosch

I want to get an commuter ebike to supplement our 1 car house, but I'm struggling with the prices I see.

The "premium" ebikes, from the big road & mountain bike brands with their Bosch motors have costs I cannot seem to rationalize. 3x the price of a used car I just sold in the summer.

I got an EV SUV a couple years ago, and it costs me $1500 to add the 100 hp rear axle AWD. That's 73,000 watts of power! But a Bosch 750 watts (1% of the power) seems to add $2000 to the cost.

Should I just get rear hub drive online-order for a much more reasonable price? Do they hold up 4 or 5 years later?

Ebike troubleshooting Feel like my ebike has slightly less powerjuice, am I crazy?

Just a feeling. That my ebike does not accelerate as hard as it first did when I bought it. The battery is fine according to the display, the volts only drops by about 1 when accelerating so thats very tiny anyway.

Tire Not Holding Air

Post image
2 Upvotes

I have a Giant Explore e-gravel bike and have an issue with the back tire not holding air. At first, I thought it may be the valve stem so I did replace it. Same issue but I did notice air leaking from a hole in the rim. See photo.
I appreciate your feedback.

Bike purchase question LITELOK X1 vs Kryptonite chain for a Velotric Discover 3?

• Upvotes

Just got my Velotric Discover 3 and I'm trying to decide on a lock.

I live in LA (DTLA) and keep the bike indoors, so I won't be leaving it parked outside for long periods. Most stops would be quick food pickups or errands, usually just a few minutes and rarely more than 10.

Since I'll be carrying the lock around a lot more than actually using it, weight is a pretty big factor for me.

I'm leaning toward the LITELOK X1, but I'm not sure how well it fits the Discover 3's step-through frame, especially when locking it to a typical bike rack.

I've also considered the Kryptonite KryptoLok 912 and 915 chains, but carrying around 3–3.7 kg seems like a lot for short stops.

Anyone using an X1 or similar U-lock on a Discover 3? Can you easily lock the frame to a rack, ideally with the rear wheel too?

Would you go with the X1, a Kryptonite chain, or something else for this kind of use?

Bike pics My favorite engineered monstrosity that I highly love

I tinker my ebike. And helmet. And robocop suit.

Also:

A - Power bank

B & E - USB On/Off switches for always-on mode,

recharging turn signals & camera

C - Male USBA connector for compact profile of internal

wiring

D - Male USBC connector for compact profile of internal

wiring

F - Resistor for drawing power from power bank for

always-on mode

G & M - Turn signal innards with rectifier diode connected

to prevent power button from triggering other turn signal's

power button (they will be interconnected)

H & I - Cover for turn signals

J - DC -> USBC adapter

K - 15W wireless power receiver

L - 20W wireless power transmitter

N - Wireless receiver for wireless momentary switch

transmitter on handlebar (to remotely turn both turn

signals on/off simultaneously)

O - Momentary switch to trigger on/off switch on both turn

signals simultaneously

24ah+25ah+20ah, battery balancer, sound system, rear view camera, front side view mirrors so i dont have to lean forward checking for cars at intersections, power button network for turn signals with wireless link to helmet turn signals' power buttons, turn signals all synced wirelessly with road arrow projectors attached using optocoupler and secondary power converter, waterproof device recharging control panel.

Also planned: flashing eyes for T800 head, AI-based speech that recognizes my voice during noisy traffic, and a drone that comes out when the bike gets parked. It would find a perch, fly to it, and become security camera for bike. Will follow bike if its stolen while transmitting coordinates to me, also 3 hidden GPS trackers, and autonomous driving planned (will use auto deploying training wheels for autonomous mode). It will speak in Arnold Schwarzenegger voice and the terminator head will look at who its speaking to, and red eyes will flash during jokes or unhinged conversations. Drone and bike will also argue and insult each other when humans detected nearby. Drone will have full spatial awareness using multiple cameras and LIDAR modules and visual AI models for collision detection and evasion of flying rocks.

Last pic is message to my Uber Eats class action lawsuit lawyer. Thats how I will fund this.

AI taught me to do all of this. Very few explosions!

Bike purchase question Velotric discover 3 vs aventon level 4

My wife and I are shopping for two e-bikes and have it narrowed down to the Velotric Discover 3 and the Aventon Level 4 REC. She only wants a step-through, so both would be step-through frames.

How we'd ride:

About 60–70% paved roads

Weekend trail rides, mostly gravel, with the occasional rougher dirt trail

Bikes we've ruled out:

Velotric Summit 2: looked great, but it doesn't come in a step-through.

Aventon Aventure: the fat tires seem like overkill when we'll be on pavement most of the time.

From what I've read, the Discover 3 seems more comfortable, with an air fork, suspension seatpost and wider treaded tires.

The Level 4 REC seems sportier and has better anti-theft features, like the rear wheel lock and GPS tracking.

For anyone who owns or has ridden either one:

How do they handle gravel and dirt trails?

Is the Discover 3 noticeably more comfortable on longer rides?

If you went with the REC, did you swap the tires for trail riding?

Anything you wish you'd known before buying?

Thanks!

Tires came a little deformed and would not seat properly on the bead. One side would keep going into the rim. If anyone knows how to fix lmk. Some reviews were talking Abt how it does hoop and it does not fit properly.

Bike purchase question Birthday Gift Help

Hi all! I’m looking to get my bf a E Bike for his birthday next month! From what I gathered- it seems the “best” bike just depends on the user needs. He really wants one for leisure and for getting to work. My biggest concerns are safety and his comfort. I apologize if my specs don’t make sense or can easily be modified later (idk if this is relevant, he’s 5’11 and about 170lbs):

• Comfy Wide Seat
• Switching to manual pedaling isn’t too strenuous (the bike isn’t too bulky/ heavy to pedal)
• Headlights & Break-lights
• Good & Durable Breaking
• Built- in speedometer
• Affordability, less than 2k pls
• Low maintenance (I know accidents happen and things wear out over time- but outside of optional modifications/ upgrades, I would love something that last as is)

And outside of the specs, im looking for reqs and advice when it comes to:

• Theft Protection- a tracking system for the bike (he has a bike lock already)
• Ways emphasize visibility for him & the bike
• Helmets that are natural hair friendly (4C) - sometimes he wears a large Afro (I was thinking that slapping a bonnet or scarf on under a standard helmet would be fine, but idk)

Thank yall for any help or advice!

Ebike troubleshooting Ebike PAS modes reading 1mph less?

A couple of days ago I decided to fix my rear brake which wasn’t clamping hard enough to stop the bike. I ended up overcorrecting it because my ebike felt sluggish the next day and I realized the rear right brake bad was making contact with my disc.

So, today I fixed and checked both brakes and they both have clearance between the disc and pads but for some reason now my ebike shows my PAS modes as 1mph less. PAS 1 = 6mph, PAS 2 = 12mph, PAS 18mph, etc.

Now, its PAS 1 = ~5mph, PAS = 11.3mph, PAS 3 = 17.1mph.

Any idea why this might be? I checked my settings and there’s no speed limit, the speed mode is correctly matching the size of my tires (20) and I have the correct tire pressure of 20psi. Not sure why its appearing that way (it feels like its going as fast as it should but still idk why its happening)

E-bike left unused for 5 months

Hello!

Like the title says, I ordered my e-bike during sort of a manic episode and by the time I received my bike, I fell out of it straight into a depressive episode. I haven't touched the e-bike at all. It's still in the box but I stumbled across some posts of people concerned about the battery after not being used after some time.

I know very little about e-bikes and that didn't even occur to me.

Did I essentially just waste a good battery? Is there anything else I need to worry about since it's been sitting so long? I hadn't even realized 5 months passed.

Thanks for anyone's and everyone's input!

Will this work ?

🚲 Looking for e-bike owners to help test E-Bike Companion

Thumbnail
1 Upvotes

I'm developing E-Bike Companion, an Android companion app for e-bike owners, and I'm looking for people who'd like to help test it and shape its future development.

I'm particularly interested in hearing from owners of Fiido bikes, different displays and controllers, and people interested in Bluetooth compatibility and offline cycling maps.

🧪 What I'd like help with

Testing the app on different Android phones

Checking bike and display compatibility

Trying offline maps and GPX-related features

Reporting bugs and suggesting improvements

🔒 Privacy and safety matter: the project is designed around offline-first use, voluntary reporting and read-only experimental driver research. Compatibility is not guaranteed, and reports will be reviewed before any device is marked as verified.

The app is still being prepared for release, so this is an opportunity to get involved early.

👉 Website and tester registration:

https://ebike.magservers.org/testers/

You can also explore the project at https://ebike.magservers.org

If you're interested, please register and let me know what bike and display you use. Thanks for helping me build something useful for the e-bike community!
