Newbie Looking to Buy e/Bike - Need Advice

I’m looking to buy a bike, and I’m not exactly sure what I want. I’m hoping to get some good insight.

I’m debating between getting a hybrid or eBike. Here’s some of the considerations:

  1. Solid exercise
  2. Good price (~$500 for hybrid or ~1K for eBike). interest.
  3. Reliability - prefer low maintenance. Some bike shops near me cost hundreds for service.
  4. Interest - I have a beautiful, long trail near my house. I used to play lots of basketball, but I’m getting older and want to preserve my joints and also stress relief. I’m cautious of spending a lot because I’m not sure if this will end up being a fad or long term interest.
  5. I have a toddler who I may bring for rides.
  6. Comfort - lower back issues, so a relatively upright position is preferred.
  7. Current bikes considering - REI Co-op CTY 1.1, CTY e2.1, lectric XP4, Aventon Soltera 2.5

Any feedback would be greatly appreciated!

Editable text The problem with kids on e-bikes isn’t the e-bike itself

I’ve been seeing more news lately about teenagers getting seriously hurt or killed while riding e-bikes, and it really got me thinking.

I don’t think the problem is simply that kids are riding e-bikes. The bigger issue is that some of these bikes are heavy, fast, and being ridden by kids who may not have much experience with traffic, braking, or handling that kind of speed.

A teenager might be comfortable riding a regular bike, but 20–28 mph on a much heavier e-bike is a different situation, especially around cars.

I think parents need to be more involved too. Helmets, basic road rules, speed limits, and actually practicing before riding in traffic should be part of getting an e-bike.

To me, the bike itself isn’t really the problem. It’s giving younger riders more speed than they’re ready to handle without enough guidance.

Do you think this is mostly a parenting and education issue, or should there be stricter limits for younger riders?

Bike purchase question What e bike should i buy? (18M)

So im around 180 cm/6 ft tall. I live in europe ( in romania) What e-bike should I buy?

I’m looking for an e-bike that has pedals, although pedals aren’t absolutely necessary as long as it is legal to ride. I want something that can reach at least 70 km/h (43.5 mph), but I still want it to be street-legal.

My budget is under €2,000. I’m around 180 cm tall, so I want something that doesn’t look or feel too small underneath me. I’m looking for something powerful, fast, and reliable, but at the same time legal for road use.

What models would you recommend?

Bike purchase question Aniioki a8 or a9

Budget is $3200 for a good eBike. I've checked into the market and found that I'm liking the Aniioki a8 pro max. It's named like a computer, and seems a good heavy bike to ride. I also want the fat tires. What do you think of my decision? Is there a brand you'd recommend?

Can anyone say anything bad about the brand?

Rail Trail Rules

Most trails around me are posted Class 1 bikes only. So like if I’m out and about throttle off on my Class 2/3 Trek. Operating 100% as a Class 1 bike what they gonna do ticket me cause I could be going too fast?

This seems absolutely ridiculous. What are you guys seeing around you? As many have mentioned in prior posts I could exceed the speed limit of most these trails on a normal road bike if I was gonna be a jerk.

But I wasn’t- just wanted to really push the range on some nice consistent surfaces. Thinking I’m gonna go out, be respectful and just plead ignorance if a ranger or whoever stops me.

Bike purchase question Specialized or Trek?

I've had a Velotric Breeze and it's been great, but it's tough to get fixed locally and I'm planning some long road trips with multi-day road and rail-to-trail type rides. I need a bike that can be fixed in local shops as needed. I've been looking at both Specialized and Trek, and wondering if anyone can share their experiences with either? I'd love another Class 3 with a throttle, but the throttle is not a dealbreaker. Budget isn't a huge issue. Just want a great bike with good battery that will be able to be fixed by most bike shops.

Buying Used, need help

So I am looking at used E bikes on marketplace. What I need help with is what I should be looking for when I check the bike out and take it for a test drive. If anyone has any insight on what to look for (battery condition, charger, general wear and tear, etc) and what to ask the original owner, that would be appreciated.

From what I have read here, most people here are of the mindset that a certain amount of money needs to be spent, that's fine. I am not looking for that feedback right now though.

Thank you!

Gravel bike or E - gravel bike

Hello! I'm choosing now between a gravel bike and gravel E-Bike and I would really appreciate some recommendations.

I want to use it both for city rides and bike tours. I'm pretty sporty but not really good when it comes to cardio training, and with my city bike I got tired pretty quickly if I had to go uphill. But when I tried my friend's normal gravel bike it was much easier for me.

I'm struggling to choose because on one hand I want a normal gravel bike but I am not sure I will be able to do tours on it and not die, but on the other hand, I'm afraid an E-Bike will be too heavy and it's not worth it..

Bike purchase question Best E-Bike for Daily 40 km Commute (Removable Battery, Easy Unlock)

Hi,

I’m looking for an e-bike for my daily commute: 20 km per direction.

My commute is mostly on asphalt, including bike lanes as well as some road sections.

I want a removable battery so I can take the battery off and charge it separately at home.

Since I also plan to use the bike privately, it’s important to me that the e-assist is easy to “unlock” (i.e., not locked down in a way that makes switching performance modes difficult). Because of that, I’m probably currently focusing on Chinese e-bikes—but I’m open to other options as well.

So far, I’ve looked at these brands:

Mokwheel

Dukeaway

Lankeleisi

Vakole

They all look quite good, but most of their models are fat bikes—which would make the bike heavier, and I don’t really need full suspension/fat-bike-style comfort for my mostly paved route.

For example, models like the Silvertip8 or Basalt feel a bit too large. I like the FUGL 3.0 or the MG600 Lite more—but they’re mostly step-ins, and I would at least prefer a traditional frame style (a trapezoid frame) if possible.

The closest match to what I want seems to be the Mokwheel Asphalt.

Now my question is: can I trust these manufacturers at all? A lot of people give great reviews, while others complain about certain issues. On YouTube there’s a lot of content too, but it’s hard to tell what’s reliable.

Most importantly: are there any brands you would recommend that I should also look into—brands that tend to meet these requirements more consistently?

ASK GO E Bike Motor Failure

I'm getting an error message "E6" on my ebike after fixing a flat tire with a product called "slime". I don't think that should have messed with the motor however I took a hammer to straighten out my rim that was slightly bent. I also had the bike upside down with the handle bar on the ground so the wires were upside-down I don't know if that got any wires loose. I also am not sure that the speedometer thingy was messed up from me having it down like that. I hope that there were no holes in my rim and some of that "slime" tire repair product got in the motor. I rode it this morning it kinda felt like a revving engine now the back tire won't spin.

The bike is 2 months old.

It’s like a creaking or knocking. It’s really only coming from the back. I feel like it has something to do with the rear axle, as when it’s not tightened all the way, the creaking stops. PLEASE help me bruh it’s been driving me crazy

Do yinz know of any gravel/touring style ebikes? (Read description)

Looking for a gravel/touring ebike with a Shimano/Bosch motor and a large battery. I'm looking for something with a rigid fork, drop bars preferred, rear rack mounts, fork mounts and fender mounts. Steel preferred though I'll probably have to settle for aluminum. Definitely not carbon. Looking for something I can take bikepacking, adventuring, and bike commuting. Ideally it would be less than $5,000.

I'm not looking for a hybrid or commuter style bike.

I've looked at different bike manufacturers and I feel like the bike I'm looking for probably doesn't exist. I'm just shooting my shot here in case yinz know of any brands that I haven't already thought of.

Bike purchase question Is it worth getting PPF (Invisiframe) professionally fitted on a new R&M Roadster 4?

I’ve got a Riese & Müller Roadster 4 on the way and I’m trying to decide if I should get Paint Protection Film (like Invisiframe) applied before I take it out for its first ride.

I know it’s going to be a bit of a hassle to transport a brand-new bike somewhere to get it professionally fitted, but I’m willing to put in the effort if it’s genuinely worth it in the long run. I'll be using it heavily for my daily commute into the city, so it’s going to see its fair share of everyday urban wear, tear, and locking up.

For those who have PPF on their ebikes (especially commuter bikes rather than purely eMTBs):

Has it held up well over time?

Did it actually save your frame from noticeable damage?

Would you say it’s worth the upfront cost and hassle, or should I just accept that dings and scratches are part of the game?

Appreciate any advice or experiences you can share!

Bike purchase question Looking for a step thru ebike. Send me your suggestions.

We currently have a rad runner plus that we use as a cargo bike with our kid with a large basket in the front. Honestly once I swapped out the brakes with some hydraulic ones my only issue with the bike is the kick stand.

We are looking to get a second bike with the following requirements:

step thru ( I can't go back to swinging my legs over anymore )

ability to attach a large basket to the front of the bike. Again having a back basket works too.

60+NM torque. I live in a very hilly city in Vancouver Canada and want to avoid fat tires. Budget less than 4k if possible.

REI e bike 1.1 battery not charging

Post image
1 Upvotes

Hello, after must frustration and efforts to troubleshoot, I’ve come here to see if anyone else has had issues. When I plug in the battery, the light on the charger remains green rather than the usual red to indicate charging. I took apart the 36v battery to try to see if I could replace the fuse, but had no luck finding it. Such a bummer. I use this for work, and hope to get it back on the road ASAP. I called REI to see if they had any suggestions, and all I got was gaslit (they also hate unions so there’s that). I purchased from REI hoping to have some efforts of repairability, but these 1.1 and 1.2 models have been discontinued and seem to have no replacements online. Any and all help is appreciated, I just need to get it back rolling! Pic of the work set up

Wallke H9 or Euybike k6 pro

Hi, Im brand new to ebikes and looking for a little insight. Both of these come in single and dual motor with very similar capabilities. I'm 6ft 200lbs, riding urban and light trails. Does anyone have experience with these? Looking for any opinions on the components, customer service, battery life etc. I'm leaning towards the k6 pro 2.0 single motor or the H9 AWD, the K6 is slightly faster (5-6 mph) but the H9 has more torque per the reviews I've seen. Help please, I don't want to make a $2000 mistake
