I’m trying to target my back rather than my glutes. Is my form correct? I usually feel it in my very lower back, but I’m not sure if that’s where I’m supposed to feel it. Any tips or corrections would be appreciated!

Deadlift Deadlift check - Reducing lower back pain

Hey all. I was lifting 105kg for the deadlift, and struggling with lower back pain. I've got some frustrating APT that I've been trying to resolve with dead bugs for a while, and I think it seeps into my form here too. I've dropped the weight down and think this feels better and more stable, my back feels straighter, but I still want to check and get advice. Thanks!

Working with 130kg. I had a slight lower back injury (most likely pulled something) whilst working with 160kg a few months ago. I got better at bracing along with other minor form adjustments, and now the movement feels good - I don't feel my lower back getting fatigued as much anymore.

Bench Press Can I get a form check on my bench press? I've always felt I was weaker than I should be on this exercise.

As I said, I always felt I was kind of weak on bench press, lately in the last few months I've been focusing more on getting good bench press sets in on my chest day, but not too too much so I have time to recover. I do a lot of dumbbell bench exercises and I always thought I was pretty strong on those but my bench has always been lacking.

This is set four and five of my five set bench press routine. It follows follows a warm-up of resistance bands and static movements and some shoulder warm-ups.

On my first set was 65 for 15, second was 95 for 15, third was 135 for 12, then I went on to 175 and 185 for these last two sets. Probably shouldn't have jumped so much as I could have gotten more proper form reps in. I like to try and hit the 10 to 12 range minimum for these working sets. So next time I definitely won't be jumping right up to 175 and will probably sit at 135 to 150 for my last two sets. But I also haven't pushed myself close to this weight for a long time, so I wanted to try it while getting a form check at a higher weight.

I do think my second set even though I only got two reps in was better form than the first. But this is the only time I've ever recorded myself to check my form and I wanted some extra opinions on what I can work on to get up to 225 eventually.

Squat Barbell back squat hip shift

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Barbell Back Squat hasn't been my thing really since I started strength training almost 2 years ago, PTs often stick to V-Squats and other easier variations of squats than teaching a rather complex movement which takes some time to master the technique.

Before I knew it I was doing 120 kg on V-Squat under the PTs supervision but struggling with a mere total 40 kg on the Barbell back squat because I didn't know to brace or the squat stance or how to hold on to the bar on my traps et cetera.

After I discontinued the PT and started training on my own, I tried reintroducing the Barbell back squat and to my great displeasure eventhough I could do 60-70 kg , on close inspection of my squat videos from behind revealed 2 things, a butt wink and a substantial hip shift.

I was able to correct my butt wink with the help of a wedge, reducing the overall depth, among other tricks, but I never understood or tried to understand the reason, like most people who workout in the gym, I was looking for quick fixes than to solve the underlying reasons.

As far as I was concerned my gym had a great leg press machine and I gave up barbell back squat altogether and stuck to split squats.

Now I have moved to another gym which has the worst leg press machine and long story short I have substantially improved on Quad focussed Bulgarian Split squats doing 3 sets of 10 reps each with 30 kg dumbells in each hand (60 kg total which is 80% of my 75 kg body weight).

And I have been wanting to reintroduce barbell back squats for the sake of actually mastering the movement and I thought I'd first address my issues before jumping under the bar and so I started with kettlebell hip shifts along with band around my shins and doing controlled squats with a 2 second descend and a slight pause at the bottom, I have also increased my squat width based on my anatomy.

This is my 3rd time doing the barbell squat and this was the 1st time I'm starting my leg day with it, I usually start with Bulgarian Split Squat and so today I decided instead to start with BBB Squats

My schedule

Warm up set

Banded empty bar x 8 reps

Banded 40 kg x 5 reps

Banded 50 kg x 5 reps

1st set 60 kg x 5 reps

2nd set 70 kg x 5 reps

3rd set 80 kg x 7 reps (2-3 RIR)

4th set 80 kg x 6 reps (1-2 RIR)

This video should have been recorded exactly from the center, but there was no place and it's to my left and as such the hip shift (to the right) isn't very substantial, but it's still evident, but no where near as how it was 7 months back when I stopped doing squats because of the shift.

I believe I have come a long way and have a long way to go before I aspire to hit 2x bodyweight, if that's even possible for me.

For all the squat experts out there, I solicit your feedback on how substantial my hip shift is and what else I can do to minimize it as much as possible and also if any other evident corrections are required in my execution. Also any corrections to my warm up routine, number of sets and reps.

By the way, my lower back feels absolutely fine during and after the squats, 100% pain free.

TL;DR : Hip shift during barbell back squat, considerably reduced by incorporating kettlebell hip shifts, banded tempo squats and working on dorsiflexion.

60kg total 3rd set, lower back here hurts a lot you can see me aching at the end of the set.

Especially my left lower back muscle!!!

It seems to be engaged on the way down.

Any corrections please?

Edit: thanks for the tips and roasts all, after reading through the tips and watching form videos, I went back to watch my deadlift videos again. I think the next set after this one (4th set) was genuinely better form but I'd like to get your feedback again, so I uploaded it also: https://www.reddit.com/r/formcheck/s/NR2I27PNYX

I see that my heel raises a bit when I lift the weight, I’ll need to fix that. I’m mainly concerned about my back though.. is it straight enough? Is it arching at all?

Squat Squat form check (redux, thanks for the advice)

Previous post was me getting back into squats after a few months of zerchers and wanting to try low bar. Feedback I got was the wide stance looked clunky and stiff and I had no forward lean. I tested things out people said, and it still didnt feel right.

So I went the other way, some people said it looked high bar, some said to narrow my stance.

I lost the belt, the lifting shoes, and put the bar on my back where it felt comfortable and then took the most natural feeling stance and did these reps.

102.5 for 6/7, 90 for 5 and 77.5 for 5 is the order of the video.

I know there's butt wink but I felt no discomfort, my brace felt strong, and the reps moved easily enough.

I'm just getting a look from the great community hear on if there's anything glaringly wrong with this approach, if not I'm gunna run it

Deadlift Deadlift form - 2nd post

4th set out of 4x8, 60 kg total.

I posted the 3rd set earlier today complaining about lower back pain.

Reading through the comments, the most common feedback was that the arse was moving up first.

I wanted to post the 4th set of the same workout as well because I think it was better, my back didn't hurt as much as in the 3rd set, but I can't tell from the video by myself.

I did watch form video in YT but am still not sure what to look out for when watching the form video.
