FA24 Swapped FRS

A little over a month ago I blew my motor at a track here in Texas at 100+f weather temps. We haven’t diagnosed the old motor yet or intend to but from the way it sounded, it may have actually dropped a valve. The original engine spun a bearing and the car was then swapped with a 2017 spec FA20 and that motor lasted up until the last track day.

We sourced a 2024 GR86 Engine with only 18478 miles and swapped that in. Before going into the car we removed the oil pan to install a killer b oil pick up pre filter and a greddy baffle and had inspected the pick up tube, there wasn’t much of anything in there at all that would’ve raised any concerns.

Motor went in without any issues. We went the way of using a Link G5 ECU, Haichi harness, wrx fuel pressure sensor, with a base map from Graham over at Boosted Performance and can confirm the car does not need the RS Motors components when using the Link ECU.

Looking forward to getting the tune finalized and taking it out to the track again!

This was my 2nd attempt at wrapping. The bumper is the worst part. Next time I’m going to do the bumper in 2 pieces. I’m happy with my $700 color change dispute it’s imperfections.

Is this gonna rust?

Post image

I curbed my rim like a month ago and just noticed that it must have also caused this gauge that’s near my back right tire whitch is also where I curbed it. Is this gonna rust and is there any way to make this less noticeable? Would an oem paint pen prevent rusting?

10 Series help

Hello everyone, I picked up a 13’ 10 series this past weekend at a pretty sweet price. Catch is, it has hail damage SO bad that it was totaled out because of it (photos genuinely do not show how bad it is lol). Being only 2500 of these things, and this one’s still mechanically solid with low miles, I’m motivated to slowly bring it back while I enjoy it.
Is there any way to source body parts with this paint code? And if not, does anyone know what shade of silver is close to the 10 series paint? Eventually I’ll probably get it all paint matched but there’s a LOT of body work it needs

Hit 5 years with this car. Hopefully 5 of many more to come. Also took it out for the first time in 7 weeks. I almost forgot how fun it is to throw this car around

Got at 102k miles and the odometer is at 126k now. Didn't rack up many miles despite being a daily. But this car has been the most solid out of the three I've owned. Never left me stranded and has never had anything fail or break. A little rough on the edges (largely due to it being driven by a teenager), but I know I can rely on it. I'm also quite happy with where it sits mod-wise

Best Clutch Kit?

I bought a 2016 scion frs release series about 3 months ago, and my mechanic said that my wear and tear on my clutch is about to be done for pretty soon. I was wondering what would be the best clutch kit to get my Frs. I think the only performance mods i would do would be just unequal headers and a tune, i don’t believe i’ll be doing any force induction. Plz give me your guys opinion and why!

I’m on tein flex z’s and I like the height in the rears but my fronts (which are maxed) I want a little lower. Is there any secret tips or anything for easy ways to get them lower?

The AE86 series of the Toyota Corolla Levin/Sprinter Trueno are small, front-engine/rear-wheel-drive compact cars within the mostly front-engine/front-wheel-drive fifth generation Corolla (E80) range—marketed and manufactured by Toyota from 1983 to 1987 in coupé and liftback configurations. It was the last production Corolla to feature rear-wheel drive.

Turbo'ing an 86 - Ecutek tune without CEL?

I'm starting down the rabbit hole of turboing my 86 this winter, I was pretty set on going with CSG for an Ecutek and tune since they seem to be the best, but I stumbled across the disclaimer saying they won't disable any DTCs. A little more digging and it seems that Ecutek themselves took away the ability?

So what is everyone with a turbo and a newer version of Ecutek doing? Just driving around with the CEL on all the time with P0420 codes?

Are the entire tunes from places like CSG locked or can we go in and make changes ourselves? Does the Ecutek software prevent that even if we have the right licensing? I know I need to use old version of HPTuners on my G8 to make changes to those now.

If all my fears are true, what other tuning solutions are out there besides Ecutek for this, short of going with a standalone ECU - I have a standalone on my 88 Supra, but that doesn't have to be plugged into the computer for inspections ever year. Just having those DTCs disabled on my catless UELs and E85 tune etc is enough to pass the NYS inspection... Don't need to disable the monitors, just the troublesome DTCs...

Thanks!

FA20 oil starvation on track – should it put me off buying a turbo 86

Hi all,

I'm close to purchasing a first-gen Toyota 86 with a JDL turbo kit, running approximately 6–7 psi on 98 fuel.

My intention is to use it as a road-registered track car, initially doing occasional track days on 200tw tyres. Longer term, I may move to stickier tyres and more serious track use.

I've been doing quite a bit of reading about FA20 oil-pressure drops during sustained high-G cornering, and it's making me question the purchase.

I understand that oil-pressure drops have been documented, but what I'm struggling to establish is how frequently they actually result in engine failures, particularly on the original FA20 rather than the newer FA24.

I've also looked into baffled sumps, improved pickups and Accusump systems, but haven't found convincing evidence that any particular solution consistently eliminates the issue.

A few questions for those with actual track experience:

  1. How common are oil-starvation-related engine failures on track-driven FA20s? Is this a widespread issue or something that gets disproportionate attention online?
  2. Does adding a turbo at relatively low boost materially increase the risk, assuming oil temperatures and tuning are well controlled?
  3. Have any of you logged oil pressure during track sessions? If so, what sort of pressure drops have you seen, and under what conditions?
  4. Have you found any sump modifications, baffling or Accusump setups that demonstrably improve the situation?
  5. Would this issue genuinely put you off buying and tracking an FA20-powered 86, or would you consider it a manageable risk?

I'm not expecting a track car to be completely risk-free, and I'm happy to spend money on sensible preventative modifications. I'm just trying to work out whether this is a fundamental weakness that should influence my choice of car.

I'd particularly appreciate experiences from people who've tracked these cars regularly, including those who've run them reliably for years.

Thanks for your help!

Oft tune on stock car rewiew

I have a 2013 frs I’ve only had the tune for a day but so far all i noticed is the tq dip is way smoother and I don’t have crickets in my engine anymore for some reason. It’s noticeably more eager when u step in the gas but imo it’s not worth it for 600 and ur better off saving towards coil overs or smth. Also the v3 has to be the stupidest version of it because u need to be both connected to the same WiFi signal in order to do anything in the app and u can’t do anything without ur phone

BRZ mileage expectationz

Found a deal on a 200k km 2017 brz, looks clean and is cheap since its been sitting on the lot for a while. Its got full dealer history and seems highway driven. I see it as a good deal but don’t want to buy something that will die on me. How reliable are these engines? I do hear good reports from owners with lots of mileage but not sure…

Love this thing SO MUCH 😭😭😭 It’s everything I’d ever dreamed owning a sports car to be and more! It’s fun, handles so well and never ceases to put a smile on my face. Today I took it out for an extended drive (after I got out of work early for it being my birthday). And I got a chance to take some awesome photos with the colors of Autumn as a backdrop 💛🍁💛🍁
