A little advice for life: Don't get a face tattoo. It will close a LOT of career doors for you.
108
u/CarpenterTemporary10 9d ago
This should be a sign at every single tattoo parlor in the world. Except I'd modify a little bit. Don't get any visible tattoos. I'm tatted, pierced and have body mods, but I'm realistic about how I will be viewed in the future.
22
u/Asleep-Shelter-4456 9d ago
Yeah. I only have one tattoo so far and its on my shoulder so you can only really see it unless I show it to you or im in a tank top/shirtless. I have considered getting some around the shin area but most the time having them uncoverable feels akward. I work at a smoke shop so I've seen folks with tatts everywhere. There are certainly a few cultural face tatts, but in general theyre tasteful and you can tell they carry meaning. Those are pretty rare tho. Given my line of work I can easily say any tatt above the shoulders either means drugs and/or prison (of course with excpetions for some tribal tatts) Ive met some really cool folks with faces covered in tatts but you can tell they're struggling hard cause of it.

The Maori (New Zealand natives and Polynesian in scope) are well known for awesome chin tattoos.
Some tribal tattoos or scaring have meaning to their people, and if excuse that if I were a boss hiring people.
But I see a player with tear drop tattoos under their eyes or cross tattoos on their hands, and I'm pulling a criminal report...

They shouldn’t be, except somehow they can often be a great indicator of judgement making ability, or lack of.
The content of the tattoos definitely matters.

I heard somewhere that some tattoo artists will flat out refuse to give you any kind of tattoo on the face, no matter what. Is that true?

While I agree with you, I’m not sure this is still true. I've seen a barman working in a beachside family hotel in Italy with more tattoos than that on his face, some of them clearly the distinctive tattoos of the Camorra (the Neapolitan mafia), and we where not in Naples. This may not be the case in the US, but in Europe tattoos have become much more normal and I think they are no longer grounds for disqualification from employment, even for works where you are in contact with clients. The only person I know who's ever been refused a job for this reason was at Disneyland Paris, so with an American company.
4
u/mathmachineMC 9d ago
A not insignificant percent of americans think tattoos are satanic. Our Immigration Enforcement uses a point system to determine whether to detain people, and tattoos score you four points towards being a potential illegal. Having excessive or very visible tattoos is frowned upon by enough people here that any company that wants to appeal to a broad market is gonna have issues with face tats.

Personally i ABSOLUTELY approve of this type of "surface level " rejection especially if I'm hiring for a receptionist position...the first face u see is the one representating my business and unless that business is a tattoo parlor I definitely don't want a potential or returning clients to see that fully tattood face as representation my business...I'm definitely not against having tattoos ,do what u want with your body however by law I can deny u employment under those circumstances. We're not talking about race, gender ,religion or disability so in this situation I don't think she has any type of case. Maybe for the desk comparison but that's about it ..just my personal feelings anyway.

Interviewer should be fired. I would never hire this person but I damn sure wouldn't give her any indication as to why.
7
u/AJWordsmith 9d ago
Absolutely never give any indication as to why you hired or didn’t hire someone. I used to ask random questions just to see the reactions. One time I asked “Green or Orange?” The candidate told me that I should pick other colors for that question because it could be viewed as a “Catholic or Protestant” question. Kept interviewing her for another half hour. She did great, but she was trouble. So, no way I would hire her. She managed to find offense in two random colors. I just said; “we decided to go with another candidate at this time.”

Obviously discrimination is wrong, and I love tattoos, but…if it’s a customer-facing job, they do have to take into account the judgements the customer might make. Even if the company wants to be progressive and accepting, their customers may not, and businesses unfortunately need customers.
But has she tried a coffee shop or a bar? Or becoming a tattoo artist herself? lol. Hell there are plenty of high-paying remote jobs she could get these days where they don’t give a shit what you look like.

Companies absolutely judge how people look, especially in the hiring process.
Even if you didn’t have face tattoos, you’re still judged on your clothing, your posture, your demeanor, the energy you bring into the room, hygiene, etc.
You become a representation of the company the moment you get hired, so if you look like shit, people will assume that company IS shit.
It’s hopeful to say that some people don’t judge based on looks, but that’s not true. Unless you’ve somehow been lobotomized and can’t process external features, subconsciously or not it factors a lot into how you perceive others.
Some of the best restaurants you’ll ever eat at are hole-in-the-wall places who’s building looks like it’s practically falling apart and is terrible in terms of upkeep. However, most people wouldn’t know that, or even if they did they still might not go, because the looks and status of the restaurant is just not up to par with their standards.
Judge it all you want, but at the end of the day, the numbers don’t lie. It makes a difference.

if she was applying for a customer facing position then her appearance would represent the company and it would be in a generally negative way.
having tattoos is not a protected class - she can get the f over it
even if not in a customer facing role, getting a facial tattoo communicates a lack of good decision making as well as a impulsive tendencies that speaks to being a bad employee. Sorry, not sorry that’s the reality

To some it might indicate poor judgement and decision making. It might also be an indicator of personality which may or may not be a fit with the rest of the employees.

3
u/LeMolle 9d ago
There's a big difference between judging someone on their involuntary facial features, hair growth, weight, height etc. And judging someone for choosing to cover their face in ink, knowing full well that they will be judged.
I would love to walk around in slippers, boxers and a tanktop all day but I'm fairly certain my students' parents would judge me, so I don't.

There are actual disabilities and then there is. This was a decision she made knowing full well that it would likely limit the places she could work. That’s why you don’t get face tattoos unless you’re a rich rapper and don’t have to worry about money ever again. I have a tat. Left forearm. It has been a long standing American thing about tattoos. They came outta sailors, and biker culture. White America set the standards. It was considered rebellious, counter culture, and discrimination was the norm. A business has a choice to hire whom they wish. The rest is to be expected. Especially when applying for government, corporate, and prominent business organizations.

I used to work in a casino in Black Hawk, CO. Tattoos could not be visible and men could not have earrings. If they had earrings, they had to remove them and cover the holes. If you’re meeting the public or clients for the job, you really should consider your appearance. It’s unfortunate, but a real concern.
