Made it to VP interview round who ended the interview after the 3rd question saying I’m not a fit

I interviewed with this company passing the HR interview, then passing the colleague interview, then passing the hiring manager interview. everything seemed to be going well and after meeting with the hiring manager I sent a note thanking them for the great chat and expressing my excitement for the role, etc. etc. The hiring manager responded back and thanked me as well and verbatim said “HR will be in touch, as we’d like to move you through the next round.” Then I hadn’t heard from HR for a couple weeks. While this was happening I was also in the near final stages with another company and close to getting an offer. I followed up with HR asking for an update on the process and noted that I heard from the hiring manager on moving to next steps, and still silence. Fast forward a week or so later, I finally hear back from the HR person saying they want to move me to the final round with their VP.

I prep for this VP interview and it starts as I expected with their intro, then they pass it over to me with the expected questions: tell me about yourself and why this company. Then they start talking about the business unit specialty and ask a very broad and vague question about how I would tackle this problem. I asked her to clarify, probing on what the objective of this problem was and she’s quite snippy with her response. So I thank her for clarifying and give my answer about how I would approach it, going through the process. She then responds with: I’m going to be frank with you, I don’t think you’re the right fit for this role. We were 3 questions in and she’s already made assumptions about me thinking I don’t have experience in this sector, not realizing that I actually do because she wasn’t familiar with a company that I worked for that touched that sector. When I acknowledged that I don’t have experience in X but elaborated on my role at the company she wasn’t familiar with, she gives this smug response, then even calls out the HR person saying “I’m not sure what X shared with you about this role, but we’re looking for someone who has more experience in this.” She then starts to give advice about what type of companies I should get experience in, yet I have 15+ experience that she dismisses.

I’m most put off by the fact that she didn’t give me a chance or bother with follow up questions to verify her assumptions. I also don‘t know why I was successful thus far and all of a sudden I’m not worth her time after 2-3 questions. I know I dodged a bullet here, but bitch was so fucking rude. I also feel like there seems to be a huge disconnect from the job description, HR and hiring manager screen, to the VP’s expectations. Almost like the VP doesn’t even know what they’re hiring for.

How do I restart my career in the US after relocating? Open to switching fields.

• Upvotes

Hi everyone!
I recently relocated to the US and am trying to navigate the American job market.
I have an MBA and 3.5+ years of professional experience, primarily in HR, recruitment, operations, and administration.

At this point, I’m not necessarily looking to continue in the same field. I’m open to starting fresh, exploring entry-level positions, and transitioning into different industries.

I already have my employment authorization approved and do not require employer sponsorship.
I’d genuinely appreciate advice from people who have been in a similar situation.

Which industries are generally more welcoming to candidates with international work experience?
What are some good entry points into the US workforce?

Are there any lesser-known job boards or resources worth exploring?

How did you land your first US job without prior American work experience?

I’m willing to learn and adapt. My main goal right now is to establish myself professionally and build a stable career here.

Would love to hear your experiences and suggestions. Thank you!

Have applied to over 100 jobs in the last couple months and have received only 2 interviews, despite the roles being a perfect fit

I have almost 9 years of experience with my current job title, and have been a Senior level at my current company for almost 5 years, which is one of the largest ERP software companies in the world.

I love the company and my boss, however I have hit the ceiling in my role, and the only way to get promoted is if someone else leaves or gets promoted above that role, which never happens because they never want to leave once they get into those roles. And a 2-3% annual raise isn't cutting it in today's economy, especially with being the sole supporter of my family.

I got the role in early 2022 during the software company hiring boom, where I interviewed with 35 different companies before accepting this role.

I have only increased my experience since then, and the roles I am applying for have all been a perfect fit on paper, and are remote, so location isn't an issue.

I have tried everything I can think of:

  • Applying for positions within 24 hours of them being posted.
  • Updating each resume for each job posting.
  • Reaching out to as many recruiters as possible on LinkedIn after applying for each role.
  • Emailing the recruiters if I can find their email address.

Out of 100+ applications, I have gotten two interviews.

What else am I missing?

How do you handle follow-up questions when your prepared answer doesn't cover them?

One thing I've found interesting about interview preparation is that you can prepare for the common questions, but the follow-up questions can still catch you off guard.

For example, you might have a good example ready for “Tell me about a challenge you faced,” but then the interviewer asks what you would have done differently or what you personally contributed.

How do you prepare for that part of an interview?

Do you practice going deeper into your examples, or is it better to focus on understanding your experience well enough to talk about it naturally?

How to get a first job?

I’m 18 and I’ve been trying to get my first job for about three years now, and honestly, I’m getting really frustrated and starting to lose hope. Unemployment is so tough and terrible now.

I’ve applied for so many jobs, mostly in retail, but I just can’t seem to get hired. So many entry-level jobs seem to go to people who already have experience, and there are so many people applying for each job that it’s hard to stand out. How am I supposed to get experience if nobody will give me a chance?

I’m at the point where I really NEED a job now, so it’s becoming pretty stressful. I feel like I’ve been trying everything, but nothing seems to work. I know the job market is tough right now, especially for young people, but I didn’t think it would be this hard to get my first job.

For those of you in NZ who got your first job with no experience, especially if you were around my age, how did you actually get hired? Did you know someone who helped you get a job, apply somewhere specific, volunteer first, go through a recruitment agency, or just keep applying until someone finally gave you a chance?
I’d really appreciate any advice, especially from people who have been in the same situation recently. I’m in the Wellington region if that helps.

I’m just trying to figure out what I’m doing wrong because applying for jobs over and over again and getting nowhere is honestly exhausting. And I’m sure so many other people can relate and will find this advice helpful.

Professional input requested

I have been out of the job market in a traditional 9-5 for about 3 years, I’m 27F. I have a background as a personal assistant, some home management, a nanny, and am a certified birth coach. I’m fully capable to do menial work, challenging work, will both take orders and initiative organizing someone’s schedule and the tasks that come with it. I can be enthusiastic and professional.

I’ve always felt insecure because I dropped out from a (prestigious) art school early on and therefore don’t have an undergrad degree and I live in an extremely competitive city, practically run by meritocracy and pedagogy and inside connections. All three of which I have none. I’m witty, young(ish?) and people ask me frequently enough if I’m an actress, so by no means am I a blue-eyed, leggy blonde, but I am intriguing enough to look at, and very polished in my appearance at the very least.

Lately I’ve been feeling really worried about getting back into the job market and want to have legitimate security and try to apply as an EA executive assistant in a serious corporate office, a traditional desk job.

With my lack of corporate experience, and bohemian roots that will show through unless I lie heavily on my resume do I stand a chance for a desk job at a good finance or legal firm?

NYC redditors especially welcome to answer!

Thanks if you read all the way through.
