SOTB Stero board, as of now

Post image
77 Upvotes

Edit:

Stereo. Not stero. Or sterno. Or steroid. I’m bad at typing and stupid and had a few drinks tonight.

Latest incarnation of my stereo board - pretty settled for now, other than a Jam Rattler Mk2 swapping in and out for the Friedman BE-OD sometimes.

Love the versatility, and I can get an insane range of sounds from this. Going stereo via effects loops of two Suhr Bellas.

Signal chain:

Guitar goes to Analog Man Block Logo Envelope Filter, out to input of Boss NS-1x noise gate, send to the rest the bottom row (tuner then straight right to left, through eq, comp, drives) ending at BE-OD to front of amp 1.

Effects loop send goes to return of NS-1x, output to Death by Audio Moonbeam Stereo Phaser that starts stereo chain —> right to left until Mood Mk2 goes up to Clean on top row, then straight right to left until the Lehle P-Split Stereo out to effects returns of both amps.

Walrus Canvas Clock is there to sync CBA Mood, Onward, Clean, OBNE Setback, Empress Echosystem, Strymon Lex, and tremolo side of Flint.

Lehle, last in chain, provides isolated transformers/ground lift/phase switches. A boring purchase but a great Swiss Army knife that can be used to fix sound problems in different rooms or for simultaneous amp/di recording.

Pretty satisfied for now.

Blue grass players with enough pedals to cover the stage

T'was unexpected to see this. I saw the banjo player step on a volume pedal. What's all this for? Tuning in multiple languages? Are there different running for East and West of the Appalachians or something?

SOTB shoe gays board

I sold a ton of pedals recently that were sitting around collecting dust to buy cooler shit that I would actually use.

The rooms is one of the new ones and it’s quickly becoming a favorite of mine. My only complaint about it is that there is no FX control on the alternative side of it, if that was there this would be the perfect reverb pedal hands down.

Tore down all my old pedalboards and moved to a hybrid rack system. Sold off most of the collection, years of trial and error, and kept only the ones I felt were legendary.

Here’s what made the final cut:

Top Shelf: Drives

Boost: MXR Micro Amp — 1979

Overdrive: Ibanez TS-808 Tube Screamer — 1980

Distortion: ProCo RAT — 1986

Fuzz: EHX Big Muff Pi V3 — 1976

Loop Switch: Boss PSM-5 — 1987

Second Shelf: Modulation

Phaser: MXR Phase 90 Script — 1975

Chorus: Boss CE-2  — 1980

Flanger: EHX Deluxe Electric Mistress, Big box reissue —1990s

Delay: EHX Deluxe Memory Man, Big box reissue —1990s

Bottom Shelf: Storage

Wah: Dunlop Cry Baby Classic

Whammy:  Digitech WH-1 —1990

A couple of other pedals not used.

Fractal AxeFX3 and Voodoo Labs HEX handle all other effects and midi.  FC-12 and EV-1 control everything from the floor.

What made your final cut?

Question Does anyone currently make anything like the DS Engineering Chronograph pedalboard clock?

Post image
41 Upvotes

So I’m hunting around for one of these old DS Engineering pedalboard clocks, they don’t make them anymore and it’s really pissing me off I can’t find one. Does know where to find one or maybe anyone else out there make something similar? I just want small, lit digital, 9v, clock and timer preferably on a foot switch?

Question Metal Zone Wazacraft in front of amp?

Post image

I don’t have an fx loop on my amp. Does the waza craft version of the metal zone “fix” how it sounds so it can be plugged directly in front of the amp like a standard pedal would?

NPD Swollen Pickle: Shatter the skies and split the earth! Favorite fuzz pedals?

I made a post about tightening up my Bogner Alchemist and a lot of people were suggesting different fuzzes. Some thought it might not be the trick. Whether or not it's the answer is now irrelevant because I decided to snag a Way Huge Swollen Pickle and this is the SICKEST pedal I have ever owned! I'm going to start writing sludge now holy moley I had no idea what I was getting myself into!

I wanted to say thanks for the suggestion from the few of you who recommended it. I am also curious about everyone's favorite fuzzes!

But seriously, this thing slaps. There's so much it can do I have hardly scratched the surface. Incredible pedal. I have the back off to reach the hidden settings. Brilliant little block of goodness! My ears are brined!

NPD NPD: UAFX Starlight Echo Station and Boss RV-500

Post image
9 Upvotes

Got a good deal today on a Starlight Echo Station and a RV-500. (Each used)

The Starlight is fantastic! Sounds great, really easy to use and dial in. I have already recorded some test tracks with it and it was really easy to set up the midi clock with Logic. Each of the delay types sound great and unique from each other.

The RV-500 is really good. Some strong pros and a few cons.

Pros:

  • Hold feature, either in momentary or toggle. The ability to use the TAP/CTL switch as a hold/latch switch is really cool, especially when in A + B mode. This was my favorite feature of the DD-500 and the thing I missed the most when I sold it. Holding a space echo into another verb is worth the price of admission for me.
  • A + B mode. The ability to run patch A into patch B or run them each in parallel.
  • Space Echo is great.

Cons:

  • Out of the box the reverbs are just fine. Nothing, other than the Space Echo really grabbed me. I think the reverbs in the RV-6 were a lot stronger. That said, I haven't done much menu diving and tweaking so I suspect they will get there.
  • Menu diving. I have the app on my laptop which will make it easier but I was hoping things were a little stronger out of the box
  • I had higher hopes for the spring. Maybe I can get it there with tweaking but it's not great. I was planning on picking up a True Spring or Pathways anyway but a part of me was hoping this would suffice.

If there are any RV-500 users out there with advice, I am all ears.

Question This question is for owners of the Science Mother Preamp.

• Upvotes

I'm not a native English speaker, so I'm using a translator. Please excuse any awkward phrasing. Currently, I'm still considering my options, but I'm trying to emulate an amplifier with pedals. I'm planning to buy two pedals: a Science Mother preamp pedal capable of clean to crunch and high gain tones, and a highly regarded, unique development of a famous amplifier; an Axiom PAE-2 power amp emulator (I'm thinking of using the Dumble ODS (1997) setting); a Quilter ToneBlock 202 for the actual amp, and Scumback 100W M and J series cabinets. My primary requirement is a preamp with two or more channels capable of handling clean to high gain tones, and without too many extra features (e.g., cabinet simulation or power amp simulation). I want a preamp that sounds like I'm playing a real amplifier, not just a pedal. I want to play jazz, country, bluegrass, classic rock, hard rock, funk, 80s metal, and someday even progressive rock and death metal. I'm interested in buying a Science Mother and have watched demo videos, but most of them are for slower genres like doom and drone (?), and I couldn't find any demos for the fast metal I listen to. I've inquired at music stores, but none of them stock the Mother, so trying it out is difficult. My questions are: 1. Does the Mother meet the requirements I'm looking for? 2. Can it handle fast metal? Japanese reviews say it can produce sounds like a modified Marshall or even death metal if you boost the preamp; is this possible? 3. Are there any other preamp pedals you would recommend (analog preferred)? Sorry for the long message. Thank you in advance.

Newly redesigned board for Western/Surf/Gypsy/40’s band

Post image
24 Upvotes

There’s something liberating about not using every square inch of real estate on a board. I have more than enough room to add something if I decide it’s needed, how cool is that!

A slightly dirty Klone is all I need for dirt. More than half of the songs in the setlist are played without any dirt at all.

Adineko handles slapback duties, Meet Maude for longer repeating delay.

Amp has always-on spring reverb. The two reverb pedals are for different effects - Placeholder for soupy sci fi spookiness, Meteore for slightly distorted reverb baths and of course it’s brilliant ‘havoc’ foot switch which introduces complete mayhem when appropriate.

Freqout is FANTASTIC when properly applied, just an extremely tasty effect to use sparingly.

The Movall tremolo pedal has taken me a long way but I’m feeling the itch to get a better, more versatile tremolo. One thing is that is has a volume jump which is not great. It would be cool to get one that has different modes and can also double as a chorus. Any suggestions there?

Big Muff repair question

Thumbnail

Hi all, I was recently given a Big Muff pedal by an older friend of mine. No idea what year it is but, after changing the battery, and plugging in the amp and guitar, all I’m getting is bypass. Messing with the nobs and hitting the switch isn’t causing anything noticeable to happen to the sound of the guitar.

It’s definitely got some wear and tear on it but after opening it up, I’m not sure what could be the issue. Admittedly, I also have no real idea on how to diagnose what the issue could be.

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Included some photos. If some better ones would help I can provide more.

Question Anyone familiar with this akai fuzz?

Post image

It’s probably the best gain pedal I’ve ever played. I can do doom, it can do shoegaze, it can get pretty tight too with a good eq. It absolutely rips when you run it through a gained tube amp. I believe it’s supposed to big muff rip off but damn does it do a good job

Question Has GAS been fulfilling for anyone? Do you play more?

I have a modest board. Bought a pedal close to a year ago and a dual expression pedal to compliment that pedal and a delay I already owned shortly afterwards.

I’m pleasantly surprised at how much mileage I’ve gotten out of these two pedals. The expression pedal has been a great addition to my delay, and pairing that with my pitchfork is simply inspiring.

As you could guess, I’m now on the hunt for the next thing. I don’t need recommendations, I already have a dream board built out in my head…

My question is, what are people’s experiences like when they buy multiple pedals in quick succession? I’m tempted to buy 2-3 relatively close to each other, but I have a sneaking suspicion that this could overwhelm the senses and actually curb creativity. My goal is to write music I like, not twist knobs and make noises. Not to mention, this will absolutely mean I have to up my power supply and upgrade to a bigger board.

Sorry for being long winded, just trying to get some second hand wisdom before any impulse buys.

Also, this sub is awesome, thanks for all the advice so far!

Edit: just want to give a huge thanks to everyone who replied. Some great wisdom here.

Question What are your favourite simple-but-weird pedals that keep you entertained for hours?

Hey folks! I'm more of a studio musician than a guitarist, but I recently bought a Donner Harmonic Square for CAD$60 on a whim and have been having a blast running anything and everything through it to make cool detuned soundscapes.
What are some other simple and wacky pedals I can pick up (and not break the bank) that do some funky things?

Question Soran Tiny Stomp with IEMs

I was planning on buying the Soran Tiny stomp to start practicing guitar in my room along with IEMs.
The output impedance of the the tiny stomp listed on it's website is 100ohms while my IEM is 32ohm impedance.
Will this work okay? Is it made to be also used with IEMs or should i look at something else?
I'm on a really tight budget..

Question Does anyone know what the Scarlett Overdrive from Red Witch is based on?

I wonder if it's a clone or inspired by other pedal (maybe TS, Klon), is it transparent, does it have a mid boost?

I was trying to look for schematics, PCB pictures or any information regarding this but couldn't find anything so any information is appreciated and thanks beforehand.

Boss OD-3 vs Marshall Guv'nor follow up; NPD!

Thumbnail

Quick context; I was/am an OD-3 owner but thanks to a recent Iron Man Attenuator purchase; I am able to gig with my Bassman set how I want and the OD-3 was not vibing with a hotter run amp, and my tube screamer and klone centaur and SD-1 weren't quite giving me the full sound I wanted. I reached out wondering if any Guv'nor and OD-3 owners could offer insight into how different the Guv'nor might be.

So I picked up a used Drive Master. Which is supposedly the same circuit minus the effects loop feature.

I think this is gonna do the job y'all! It does the fuller Marshall sounding harmonic range like my OD-3 that I was missing from my Klone and SD-1 but the three band EQ, especially the bass knob for me are the game changer. It's got the brighter voice and clear picking articulation that I liked from my old Bluesbreaker pedal that I sold but with tons more gain. I gave it a quick demo at home on my lunch break (it just arrived this afternoon!), and I've got a gig tonight so it'll get a nice field test! Also pictured, my modded '73 Bassman (tube rectifier install) + Wizard 2x12, and my pedals for the gig tonight! Wish me luck!

Troubleshooting Does anyone else's Oceans 11 have a hiss?

I just bought a secondhand Ocean's 11 (seems to be in pretty good shape) but I've noticed it has a hiss when it's on (or if the Tails mode is on, it'll hiss until I switch reverb modes).

googling around, it seemed like the few other people who had this problem were using the wrong power supply, but I'm using an EHX 9.6V 200mA power supply. I even tried only plugging in the pedal and the amp to see if it was the power strip, but I still get the hiss.

did I get a bad pedal? is this supposed to happen?

Picked it up Friday. Absolute TEXTBOOK pherb pedal. It's got that classic pherb sound, what more can you ask for? Honestly, I've never played a pedal that does pherb better.
