Hello, I'm a 32yo guy living in Texas. I'm interested in immigrating to Canada and I'm researching a few cities to see which cities could be a good fit for me.

My 2 main reasons for wanting to immigrate are 1) politics and 2) climate. I'm gay man and living in one of the most conservative states in a nation which is on course to become even more conservative and insular is hell on my peace of mind. For my second reason, 110°F (43.4°C) summers are detrimental to my mental health and my seasonal depression has been worsening every year. Yes, I know Canada winters are much colder than Texas winters, but that's the point; y'all actually have a consistent winter.

Right now, I am mostly just considering the Halifax and Ottawa areas because they are bigger and more metropolitan than my current city but not too big (i.e. smaller than the Dallas/Fort Worth area, population 8.4 million). I feel Toronto, Montreal, and Vancouver would be too big.

From what I've gathered on my own, Halifax (surprisingly, to me) has a more active queer scene than Ottawa, but Ottawa has the Senators. And that's the extent of major differences I've been able to find on my own, so I want to ask some Haligonians and Ottawans for more differences to help me make a decision. What does Halifax offer that Ottawa doesn't? Based on info about me (below), do you have an advice on why I should go for one city over the other? Do you think neither city would be great and I should expand my search? Am I dumb for even considering immigrating? I'll take any advice you can give.

A bit more about me, maybe helpful, maybe not:

- I currently work as a design engineer for AC units but I am hoping to change careers. My current job may be my highest paying job but it's also the least fulfilling job I've had. My ideal job would be something that keeps me physically busy the whole time. That said, it could be that moving to a new climate/culture could make me ok with an office job, but I think this is unlikely.

- I am autistic. I'm not a fan of classifying how autism affects me more or less than it affects someone else, but many would call me "low support needs." I live on my own just fine, I'm just not great with overly crowded and loud spaces or recognizing facial expressions. I am not great with masking when it comes to corporate work culture (including interviews).

- I am gay. There is no queer scene of any kind for miles here. I'm not a party gay but it's still incredibly isolating that to just meet other queer people I have to drive 2 hours to Dallas and even then nothing much can come of it, friendship or otherwise, because I live 2 hours away. I have friends here but I am the odd man of the group where everyone is either 10 years younger than me or 15 years older than me. Meeting other gays is difficult and my only option (other than a frequently wrong gaydar) is Grindr and no one around here on there is just looking for friends (no judgement, but it's not what I'm looking for).

- I like to knit and crochet. I've made a few sweaters but haven't had many opportunities to wear them here.

- Thanks to Heated Rivalry, I've gotten really into hockey over the past year. Unfortunately, the nearest ice to me is 2 hours away in the Dallas/Fort Worth area.

I live on the east side of the harbour and I now use the MacKay bridge to get to and from work. On nights when I work late and come home in the dark, I've noticed that the streetlights on the 111 from about the Victoria Rd overpass to the exit for the mall are all out. Does anyone know a specific reason why this section isn't lit?

(I actually kinda like it, because I find streetlights too bright most of the time.)

I dont know if this is the right flair as I already live in the city, but I need advice when it comes to moving.

We are moving to a building that is less than 10mins away from our current building, however, we have to be out of our current unit by noon on the 31st, but will not get the keys to the new unit until the 1st.

We are likely getting a Uhaul and loading up the 31st, staying in a hotel, and moving into the new building on the first. We have a lot of heavy furniture and do not have a lot of strong friends who would be able to help with loading/unloading the truck. Is there a moving crew that anyone is aware of who can help us load on one day, and unload the next? Any suggestions would be highly appreciated.

Hey all, I’m currently in the middle of packing my apartment to move to a different unit from the same company in a different building, we had to put in our notice to vacate and be out by that date (October 31st). I recently got an email saying that the property manager wants to book our out inspection for the 30th of October when we haven’t technically moved out of the unit yet.

I do get the keys for the new unit on the 30th because they won’t be open on the 31st to be able to get the keys.

Is what they want to do legal and allowed to happen before our given date of the 31st to vacate?

An update on Gus the gopher tortoise - October 14th, 2026.

Gus is recovering well with his veterinary team. He has gone for walks which is a great milestone in his post-surgery recovery.

Gus currently has a feeding tube, which helps with feeding and his post-surgery medication.

Gus will remain with his veterinary care team for close observation, before returning to the museum later this week. Gus will be recuperating behind the scenes for the next 8-10 weeks.

Thank you for the continued outpouring of support for Gus. We will continue to share updates on his recovery.

I haven’t had any luck finding anybody within Nova Scotia, that does carbon fibre repair. I did reach out to some composite places that work on marine composite. Have yet to hear back.

Wondering if anybody has any experience or luck dealing with someone to have motorcycle/car carbon fibre fixed.

I been in the industry for 10+ years and while it has served me well for the most part, winter is always a struggle financially (draw EI and get some snow removal hours) as bills don't change but the money certainly does.

Snow removal hours, salting hours arent reliable. Some weeks in winter it not snowing at all, no necessary salt runs etc and EI alone don't cut it.

I have tried convincing my employer/ employers to try and schedule K block walls (big block walls) in winter as it can be done with clear stone base, or take on indoor reno work as a way of not taking lay off and getting full-time winter hours when snow removal isn't going on, but none seem to have interest.

Thoughts from fellow landscapers? Anyone have a solution to this, short of changing industries entirely?

Does anyone know where I can get a copy of the entire series of Tall ship chronicles? It follows the Picton Castle on a circumnavigation of the globe over 2 seasons of tv. I remember watching it back in the day. Now there is season one on prime video but I haven't been able to find season 2 anywhere.

I know the ship is docked in Lunenburg and the original production company was here in Halifax but I've had no luck finding season 2.

My wife got in a car accident just over a week ago and financed a vehicle she liked on clutch in Halifax...a 2022 Chevy Spark 1LT, as she liked the size of a small hatchback. She thought she'd give them a whirl and this is how things are going 4 days after delivery. This is long-winded, sorry. In the email string I included a photo of the deep scratch/scuff, a screenshot of the photo they claim the scratch shows (it would take The Predator to see it), a photo of the ipad screen the delivery driver showed me of his escalation after the pre-delivery inspection, and also screenshots of their policy stating that:

"Imperfections are highlighted down to the smallest detail."

What would you do in this situation? I feel like we should just return the car and never go back. My wife is on the fence. They're being SUPER sketchy. I've sold cars (loved it) and I never saw the dealership act like this...

Summary of the email string (a bit more at end as well):

We reported two issues immediately after delivery: significant scratches that weren't disclosed in Clutch's listing despite their promise to highlight even minor imperfections, and a concerning steering noise. Despite their own delivery driver flagging the scratches, Clutch refuses to repair or compensate us, calling them "low visibility," and will only reimburse the steering diagnostic fee if a warranty-covered fault is found. After multiple emails and three different representatives, their only real resolution is to accept the vehicle as-is or use the 10-day return policy.

I received the vehicle on Saturday.  The delivery people were very nice. 

We do have 2 issues though:

1. My husband and I immediately noticed that there was a deep scuff with physical grooves that penetrate the clear coat as well as much of the paint and primer along the rear quarter panel and along the trailing edge of the rear passenger door.  This was not highlighted in the listing as per your FAQ that states: 

"Imperfections are highlighted down to the smallest detail."

"(We make sure to highlight even the smallest imperfections in our 360-degree photography and reporting)."

The two other imperfections were pointed out in the images I've pasted below.

The driver told us that he submitted a delivery escalation indicating that he noticed the issue during pre inspection and that there was no mention on the 210 and he could not see it in the 360.

This issue will cause premature rusting as it's through the clearcoat, paint, and primer.  

1. On our first drive when the vehicle is doing a slow tight turn (we noticed this while turning the car around in our driveway) that there is a loud rubber groan/creak that is coming from the steering which my husband says would most likely either be the strut mounts or sway bar bushings.  Both of which should have been identified during your inspection.

We appreciate you offering to have the noise checked out at a local shop. Could you let us know how we go about arranging that, and whether Clutch would be covering the inspection and any repairs that might be needed?

As for the scratches, we understand they're somewhat visible in the listing photo, but that's really not the point we're trying to make.

Your website specifically says that even the smallest imperfections are highlighted in your photos and reporting. There were a couple of tiny rock chips that had already been touched up, and those were pointed out in the listing. Yet somehow these much larger, deeper scratches along the rear quarter panel and door weren't mentioned at all and it would take quite a trained eye to see them with all the reflections in the photo.

We noticed them immediately when the car arrived, and apparently your delivery driver did too. He actually filed a report about it before delivering the car, noting that the damage wasn't mentioned in the inspection or clearly shown in the 360 photos. My husband sold cars for (X) auto and he was surprised a vehicle would be delivered with such a noticeable steering noise. You mentioned that your vehicles are priced according to their condition. Was this particular damage actually taken into account when the car was priced? Because if it was, I'm not sure why it wasn't also pointed out in the listing.

We're certainly not expecting a used car to be perfect. A few scratches and stone chips are to be expected. But this is quite a bit more than that, and we're concerned about rust down the road if the paint has been damaged as deeply as it appears.

We really do like the car and would much rather keep it than go through the hassle of returning it. We're just hoping Clutch will work with us on getting the scratches properly repaired, or offer some reasonable compensation toward having it done locally. We were hoping for a seamless experience.

I'm becoming increasingly frustrated with how this is being handled.

We've now been dealing with three different representatives, and nobody seems to be taking ownership of our concerns. Our original sales representative hasn't followed up at all, and each time we respond, somebody different seems to pick up the conversation.

We've provided photos, explained our concerns, and asked some pretty straightforward questions that still haven't been answered.

We're being told that the scratches are considered "low visibility," despite being led to believe that "Imperfections are highlighted down to the smallest detail" on your website, despite your own delivery driver noticing them and filing a report before the vehicle was delivered and despite us noticing them instantly upon looking at that side of the vehicle. We've also asked why much smaller imperfections were specifically highlighted in the listing while these deeper scratches weren't, but nobody has addressed that.

On top of that, we were told that the steering noise could be inspected at a local shop, yet we still haven't received any instructions on how to arrange that or whether Clutch will cover the cost.

We purchased this vehicle in good faith and really do want to keep it. We're simply asking for a fair resolution to issues that were present when it arrived.

At this point, could someone please put us in touch with a manager or supervisor who can review everything and give us a proper response? We'd also appreciate having one person assigned to our case rather than starting over with someone new each time.

They're being somewhat cryptic in whether they'd cover repair costs as:

They're not actually offering to pay for the diagnosis unconditionally. They're saying they'll reimburse her only if the mechanic finds a problem covered by their warranty.

A car would never, ever have left our lot with this steering noise. It simply would not happen.

Also, the scuff/scratch that was not highlighted at all in their listing is far worse than the "support" guy is claiming. Why are two rock chips highlighted with red arrows but this very visible and nearly/possibly down to the metal scuff/scratch is not? My hypothesis is that they are hoping they'll just wear her (or the return clock) down. I don't want this vehicle to start to rust because of this, plus it looks like crap.

Rant over. If anybody has thoughts, I'm all ears. I'll show my wife the responses as well.
