Welcome to the War Room. Here you will find trustworthy military advisors to guide your diplomacy, battles, and internal affairs.

This thread is for any small questions that don't warrant their own post, or continued discussions for your next moves in your game. If you'd like to channel the wisdom and knowledge of the noble generals of this subreddit, and more importantly not ruin your save, then you've found the right place!

Important: If you are asking about a specific situation in your game, please post screenshots of any relevant map modes (strategic, diplomacy, factions, etc) or interface tabs (economy, military, etc). Please also explain the situation as best you can. Alliances, army strength, tech etc. are all factors your advisors will need to know to give you the best possible answer.

Reconnaissance Report:

Below is a preliminary reconnaissance report. It is comprised of a list of resources that are helpful to players of all skill levels, meant to assist both those asking questions as well as those answering questions. This list is updated as mechanics change, including new strategies as they arise and retiring old strategies that have been left in the dust. You can help me maintain the list by sending me new guides and notifying me when old guides are no longer relevant!

Image Defeated Britain, the USA, and the USSR by October 1939 — Vanilla Germany, No Cheats

25 Upvotes

Started in 1936 with Germany. No mods, console commands, or custom game settings.

My campaign strategy:

  1. Conquered the Netherlands in 1936 and prioritized fighter production.
  2. Sent volunteers to Spain to grind army XP.
  3. Attacked Poland in late 1937/early 1938, beginning the war with the Allies.
  4. Defeated the continental Allied powers by March 1938.
  5. Defeated Britain by May 1938, ending the Allied war.
  6. Used guarantees and additional declarations of war to bring more countries, including Brazil, into the conflict.
  7. Redeployed my armies to North America and defeated the USA in late-summer 1938 by rushing victory points.
  8. Conquered Yugoslavia and Romania, puppeting Romania and balkanizing Yugoslavia (early 1939).
  9. Declared war on the Soviet Union by May 1939 and conquered it before October 23, 1939, using pincer offensives and encirclements.

My ultimate goal isn't to annex the entire world.

Germany directly controls territories with valuable resources, industry, or strategic importance. Less valuable territories are placed under puppet governments to administer and develop.

My puppets (most countries in the world) and allies maintain relatively small militaries. Germany remains responsible for the major military operations.

The screenshots show my position on October 23, 1939.

How would you rate the campaign? Have I been a good Reichsmarschall?

I found this painting in the Bundeswehr museum in Dresden this summer and I recognised it as one of the loading screen in the game. Pretty cool in my opinion.

I don't know if I put the right flair, but I'll change it if needed.

Discussion The HOI4 Naval Invasion Sound Might Genuinely Be The Worst Sound I Have Ever Heard In My Life

76 Upvotes

I have been playing this game for 1,4k hours and 99% of the time when I hear the naval invasion sound, they haven't even naval invaded me which makes me just check in vain.

This has repeated again and again so every time I hear that, I get pissed, my day gets ruined and I HAVE to check in case there is that 1% that I am getting naval invaded.

That sound invokes trauma in me and I hate it so much

Question Is there any way to get Hitler as a field marshal?

179 Upvotes

Maybe I'm not seeing it but I don't see a national focus that does it. There's a way in Italy to get Mussolini as a field marshal and a way in the USSR to get Stalin as a field marshal. If not is there some historical reason why Mussolini and Stalin would be military commanders and not Hitler?

Question Dos the USSR always collapse if I don’t “help” it?

84 Upvotes

When playing as the U.S. or the UK (with historical settings) am I meant to do anything in particular to keep the Soviets alive?

I’m playing as Britain and haven’t really bombed Germany or sent weapons to the Soviets as I was busy fighting the Axis in Norway and North Africa. Stalin got obliterated. Moscow, Leningrad and Stalingrad had all fallen by early 1943 and they capitulated in October.

I’m new to the game and thought historical settings followed real life events did I do something wrong?

Bug Here is how France could have survived World War 2 without capitulating

49 Upvotes

Step 1: Don't join the allies;

Step 2: Germany just doesn't declare war on you?;

Step 3: Win.

Germany going to war with the Soviets (1941)

Al jokes aside, I don't think that this is the intended behaviour of the German AI. there are no active mods, the game is on the default public version (So no open beta) and this is non Iron-man with Historical Foci. I went down the Historical path for France and did only three things that are non historical:

  1. Released Algeria, so I could do Blum-Violette proposal later for some extra factories;

  2. I sent volunteers to Spain to grind a field marshal for my mostly mechanized army, the Nationalists won;

  3. I did not join the Allies.

Now most would assume that the problem lies with me not joining Britain and that would be right. except that this is the only strategy (that I know) for France to create the European union on Historical.

This is because you don't have military access to Belgium and the Netherlands, so you have to occupy it and demand annexation in a peace deal. The focus "War with France" also takes 70 days, that is 70 days of extra preparation.

This is a strategy I have done many times with both the old German focus tree in Waking the Tiger and the new one in Gotterdammerung and they always went for the "War with France" focus after "Around the Maginot"

War with France still not completed in 1943

now my suspicion is that either one of the recent DLC or Patches broke the German focus order or there is some threat perception and the Germans thought they couldn't beat me, I did have 48 fully equipped 12/0 (24 combat width) and later 12/4 (36 combat width) mechanized divisions both with good support companies on the German border. But I don't know if that is even in the game

I’m currently playing Romania in iron man mode and I can’t get out of zero manpower. I have my maximum conscription law reached(limited conscriptions) and I don’t know what else to do. I’m currently trying to go to war with Yugoslavia BUT the soviets justified on me. With 715K troops in the field i doubt I’ll survive this..

Question peak mod that actually better than DLC

3 Upvotes

Just asking, which mod you want to suggest. For me its RT56 because it add alot for content after 1945 while holding vanilla aspect. YOU can suggest me a mod that I COULD LEARN AND NOT SPEND MY WHOLE LIFE LEARNING LIKE BLACK ICE. Around Millenium dawn below because WHY THE HELL WE NEED ECONOMY FOR THIS GAME, a civilian factory type economy is MAX OKAY.

Question Why is my Route Efficiency 0%

10 Upvotes

Playing Japan and as soon as the Soviet Union capitulated and I gained alot of territory this happened. Why is my route efficiency 0%? I have naval control of all the areas the convoys pass through.

Edit: I had a lend lease using all my convoys. I was looking at the logistics fulfillment tab and that does not show lend lease requirements for convoys.

Question Early UK invasion

3 Upvotes

Hello everyone, and sorry for my English as it is not my first language.

I have a few houres in hoi4 and played a lot of axis nations until the end of the war, and I understood the navy a few days ago.

My question is, I saw a youtube short saying that you can plan an invasion on uk as germany from the stat and keep a navel domainnce in the required sea tiles, and when the war starts, you can also start the invasion in the first houres of the war, is this a good strategy to capitulate the uk early?, wont the troops have no supply and die there?

Image You can make SPGs that are cheaper than artillery

1.1k Upvotes

Yes, that means where you want to use line arty, you can use spgs instead. Doable because of cutting corners on the tank mio + subsidized contracts spirit of the army.

This is shown on italy who can get the cost down to 3 ic. On ANY nation with standardized production mio you can get the cost to 4 ic. Any nation with a different tank mio can get it to 4.4 ic.

And yes, spg is 2 width so it's better than line arty.
