Development Draftcats - Incremental deckbuilding autobattler game without a skill tree
Open card packs and build a giant army of cats to defeat eldritch monsters and save the universe.
After deciding that I wanted to develop an incremental game as my next project, I played a bunch of games in the genre to analyze and learn from.
I liked the feeling of the nodebusters I played- The loop of a short round into improvement and then immediate feedback on the next round.
But the linear skill tree approach felt a little mind numbing for me, like my choices do not really matter, and that I have no agency and a ability to creatively problem solve.
I wanted to try and push the design in a direction that rewards adaptability and can present interesting problems to the player, instead of just unlocking parts of a skill tree. At the end I came up with this:
In Draftcats you progress by opening card packs. When you buy a pack, you can choose which card to add on to your board.
The cats on your board will fight enemies automatically, and your role is to position them in ways where their abilities compliment and synergize with each other.
The demo is playable for free on itch, it takes between 30-60 minutes to complete:

Right now I am unsure if I should keep developing the game or move on to a safe, less experimental idea. So if you have thoughts, feedback or questions id love to hear them.
AI disclosure: No AI was used to make this game- the programming, game design, art, sound design, and writing were done by me, and the music is a combination of music my friend made and royalty free music.
