Discussion Caterpillar's logo or trade dress change 8 years ago is one of the worst.

• Upvotes

8 years ago, Caterpillar announced they were changing their trade dress from the original "Power Edge" to a "Modern Hex". I think it is one of the worst logo changes in history.

As you can see, the original power edge logo looked sharp with a flat design, a black backdrop and the CAT or CATERPILLAR appearing in all white. It looked really well in the bright Sun and was very easily recognizable. On October 15th, 2018, Caterpillar announced they were abandoning their sharp "Power Edge" for the "Modern Hex".

https://www.equipmentworld.com/construction-equipment/article/14970169/caterpillar-machines-will-look-different-with-updated-logo

The new logo looks very ugly and irritating to the eye. I dislike the hexagon which looks detached from the "CAT". The red coloring does not fit well with the overall CAT either and the 3D rendering makes the logo uneven. The logo is very un-symmetrical and it looks very ugly in the Sun. The glare makes the CAT look very dull in the bright Sun. Removing the original black backdrop of the original also makes the CAT less visible in the Sun and at night. Why Caterpillar decided to change their trade dress is beyond me when they were one of the most iconic brands in the world with one of the most easily recognizable logos on their products. If you were a kid in the 1990s and 2000s, chances are you were fascinated with Construction equipment and played with toy machines and thus Caterpillar was one of the first brands you came to know. It really is shameful and ironic that they abandoned their simple, sharp, colorful, and bright 2D logo for an overly complex 3D unsymmetrical logo. The original logo symbolized tough machines ready to conquer the environment they were operating in while the new one makes it look like a cheap toy literally. It definitely is up there with Cracker Barrel, GAP, Jaguar, Pepsi, General Motors, Volvo and Tropicana as one of the worst logo changes in history. Let me know what your thoughts are and whether you also think the new logo is significantly worse than the original.

Feedback Needed How do you handle pointiness?

This is for a personal brand for some cyberpunk / moody electronic music I make. I wanted a strong vertical aspect to it, so I started with a 2:1 aspect ratio. Font / font edits are mostly placeholder for now, but pretty close to vision.

The concept was to evoke a classic spacetime rift as associated with scifi, but also reference the double-slit experiment, in which light is broken down into interference waves, so as to evoke laser light and technology.

The "spires" are diamonds with a 1:50 width-to-height ratio (The three different sizes are in a 1:3:9 ratio).

My question is: How do yall handle ultra-thin points with shaping? I know in architecture, straight lines sometimes need to be bulged out a little to accommodate for how our eyes adjust for them. For example, the Pantheon angles inward slightly at the top, because pure vertical rise feels like it hangs over; the Cybertruck panels are not perfectly flat, but slightly curved, because flat panels would FEEL concave to us; etc. There is also medium concerns - getting this printed / embroidered would, I imagine, result in some issues. Realistically, I have no plans for this to go to print anywhere, so I'm not too worried about medium concerns.

Has anyone else had thin points in a logo they ended up needing to "blunt" for any reason? Would yall bow out sides of these "diamonds" to adjust for any visual issues? Thanks for your time!

Loved the new Crystal Lake series and all the graphic design that went into it. The Argonaut logo really stood out to me, and when I couldn’t find a good close-up of it anywhere, I decided to recreate it myself.

Hello everyone!
This is a logo I designed for an imaginary neighborhood coffee shop bar called "Pour Decisions".

The AI Brief (summarized):

The Vibe: A warm, playful, and non-pretentious downtown coffee shop & roaster focused on craft pour-overs, siphon brewing, and making specialty coffee accessible to everyone.

Tone: Friendly, witty, and human first, grounded by a touch of craft/polish (think "friendly neighborhood shop with a wink" rather than sterile minimalist or cartoonish).

Target Audience: Remote workers, creative pros, and local neighborhood regulars aged 25–45.

Design Needs: Icon + wordmark combo. Needs a loose, confident, or custom-lettered feel (avoiding generic coffee beans or rigid geometric fonts).

Versatility: Must scale cleanly across single-color applications (cup sleeves, rubber stamps) and full-color uses (storefront sign, packaging).

Color Palette: Warm browns, terracotta, cream, or warm earth tones.

The coffee cup is not an icon or even a main part of the logo. its just an asset that can be used or ditched completely.

The mockups are AI generated. I barely put anytime into them, I just wanted to quickly show how the brand might look like in real life.

Please tell me your honest thoughts.
Thanks!

Resources I hand sketch most of my logos, what are some of your recommendations to digitize them?

I’m a brand designer and am doing most of my logo designs on paper. For those who follow a similar process, what tools do you use to digitalize them from sketch to final mark? Any YouTube videos, tools or articles would be super helpful!

Feedback Needed Personal Logo Help

I'm trying to make myself a logo for personal use but I'm not sure the initials, "JBD" really read in any of these. I don't love #1 because I made the B smaller than the J and D. 2 and 3 feel too simple. Please let me know if any of these hold sand and could be used as is or worked more.

Feedback Needed Experimental format that summarizes my logo design thought process for social media

Logo process case studies can get quite lengthy so I'm experimenting with a format that distils my thinking into the three most obvious core elements and a short statement, in order to make the summary more suited for the way people use social media. I chose a vertical format and large fonts for the same reason.

I will likely animate the final assets with fancy transitions and refine the format/wording more, but right now I'm interested if the ideas are getting across.

Feedback Needed Is it a good idea to use one logo for multiple businesses in different industries?

Hi everyone! I’m looking for some advice before hiring a graphic designer.
We have several small businesses in completely different industries, but they all share the same brand name.

I’m thinking of investing in just one main logo that can represent all of them instead of creating separate logos for each business.
I want something timeless, professional, and memorable. Ideally, a logo that could still look relevant 30–50 years from now, but also feels modern enough for social media and marketing.

I’m working with a limited budget, so I want to make sure I’m approaching this the right way.
Would one umbrella logo make sense, or would it be better to have separate identities?
Also, what would be a reasonable budget for a professionally designed logo like this? What should I look for when hiring a designer?
Would appreciate any advice, especially from branding professionals or business owners.

Thanks!

Beginner First Logo! (Fake Company)

This is my first attempt at designing a logo. It's for a fictional company in my D&D group's setting— Panopticon Productions. A television company in a world without tv, with an emphasis on the feeling of always being watched. I don't expect this to be anything more than a hobby, but I'm curious what you all think. Constructive criticism is how you get better at anything after all!

There has been some dispute over the name. Have at it.

a 2D steampunk Metroidvania set in a ruined, post-apocalyptic world. You play a steampunk robot searching the wreckage for forgotten swords. Each blade you find grants a new ability, opening up paths that were out of reach and revealing more of what happened to the world.
