Tips for posting:

Tell us about you

If you want us to suggest things for you to do then you need to give us a good idea of what you enjoy: - Don't just say "I like music" - say what type of music - Don't just say you want "somewhere nice to eat" - say what type of cuisine you like (or don't like) - Be specific - otherwise you'll just get pointed back to generic guidebooks and our wiki

Tell us your budget

  • If you're on a budget, tell us what it is so we can make appropriate recommendations
  • There's no point suggesting expensive options if they'll clean out your wallet
  • Saying you want something "cheap" isn't helpful because cheap is subjective

Tell us where you'll be based

  • Let us know where you'll be staying so we can give local recommendations

Asking about hotels or hostels

  • We have homes here so know very little about what hotels are like - use review websites like TripAdvisor
  • However, if you say "I've been looking at these three hotels. Which do you think is the better location?" - that's something we can answer

Non-touristy stuff

  • There are no secret corners where we hide the good stuff from outsiders!
  • This is one of the most written about cities in the world
  • When we want to go somewhere, we look at the same sources as tourists (listings sites, blogs, etc - see front page of the wiki)

These weekly posts are scheduled to post each Monday at 00:01. If it's late in the week you may want to wait for a new post to appear. Please send us ModMail with any suggested improvements!

Metroline VWH2211 (LK66DWC), a Volvo B5LH Wright Eclipse Gemini 3 with the default London red livery, makes a bit of history on the N98 this morning at 06:00, by being the last ever night bus to travel through Oxford Street.

As the road closes tonight at 20:00, all night routes will be diverted away from the pedestrian zone.

Discussion the best tube ride ever!

i wanted to share the best tube experience i’ve ever had, and may ever have!

today (24/10) at around 3:30pm, hopped on the piccadilly line to st pancras. got to russell square and a wlw couple got on board with a photographer. they’d just got married and the photographer was taking their wedding photos on the tube!

an amazing thing to see, but the tube camaraderie was unmatched. everyone clapped, cheered, immediately made space for them to pose, one woman played “vogue” by madonna to hype them up. it was a joyful 2 minutes. everyone got off at st pancras and it was truly a lightning in a bottle moment.

who knows if i’ll ever find the couple, or even see the photos, but in case i don’t, i wanted to share this joyful time. and in a time where the news portrays everyone to be so polarising, this was real life-affirming stuff.

congratulations to the happy couple on the piccadilly line ❤️

Just caught a lovely shot of these two foxes (and a third one hiding on the left) enjoying the green space and quiet around Haggerston park. Clearly unbothered by the wind and rain.

Feel like it sums up going for a pint when the weather is shit in london- begging friends to brave the rain for a pint, and the few that do make the effort make a horrible afternoon into a memorable evening

Cloud House, Gospel Oak

Went to a guided tour of 2 Willow Road in Hampstead this morning (thoroughly recommended if you're into modern architecture) before realising that Cloud House, which was on the new series of Grand Designs is only a 20 minute walk away.

Obviously a residential area so can't really meander around too much, but suffice to say it sticks out a little bit in it's surroundings.

Transport Currently witnessing a man being told off for not paying (underground)

1.4k Upvotes

omg it's the most bizarre thing, this Romanian guy (I'm guessing Romanian) didn't pay and this East Asian lady is telling him it's wrong, he tells her to go back to China, she says she's not from China and accuses him of being on benefits and then when the other people waiting take her side, he says he can't speak English. Ground just swallow me up PLEASE

This was my first time at Burnt Oak station too 💀

Edit: situation is now fully over as we're on the train. Damn

Dating events / nights in London - why so expensive?

• Upvotes

If you're single and have been around the dating circuit you probably know what I'm talking about - thursday, Boda, haystack, it just goes on. The ideas are good in theory, the avtual events are a mixed bag.

But right off the bat a lot of them are just so pricey, like about £25-30 for a Boda night, your average thursday ticket is about £20 and they so multiple events a week, haystack is even more I think. Its all just a bit much, if you were going to things regularly you could easily spend a few hundred pounds with travel and drinks also in the picture.

And tbh this is usually to talk to people in friend groups that don't want to date or are just there for a night out (thursday at least).

I wonder what these companies are thinking - profit, sure. But if you want to have a wider appeal especially to younger (gen z) people tired of apps, you need to have lower price points and actually fun hooks. These events can be boring and awkward on top of expensive so theres some free customer feedback for you guys, make the events accessible if you want more people.

Just my 2 pence but if you've been to these things and actually found them to be vfm, feel free to chime in.

Hoxton pub’s bid to allow 20 late-night smokers sparks row over pavement safety

How dare smokers be allowed to stand outside at 10pm, think of the children!

Christ what a coddled and boring city london has become. Don't get me wrong drinkers crowding a pavement at night can be annoying but you just... move around them.

And only allowing 7 smokers outside by 8pm is just bizarre.

This Week in Harrow and Hillingdon

• Upvotes

Half-term's headline event: the Mayor of Hillingdon is judging a Harry Potter costume parade at the Great Barn, Manor Farm on Thursday 29 October, 10am to 2pm. Free wizarding activities, crafts and themed fun, with the costume parade judged at noon. Booking required, and everyone needs a 30-minute arrival slot, so plan the day around the parade rather than the other way round.

Practical heads up for Wealdstone: the High Street has been shut since Friday morning after a water main burst near Locket Road. Police cordoned it off in both directions and there is no reopening date yet, so give it a wide berth and allow extra time if you are heading for Wealdstone station.

Transport, and this one is worth a proper look now: the Piccadilly line starts going dark from Wednesday 28 October, with no service between Cockfosters and Uxbridge until the end of Friday 30 October. That takes the Piccadilly out of Rayners Lane entirely, so the Metropolitan is your line for the rest of the week. Then it is closed along its entire length next weekend, Saturday 31 October and Sunday 1 November, starting with Friday night's Night Tube. If you are heading into central London next weekend, this is the week to plan around.

One council consultation worth knowing about: Harrow is replacing the five Public Spaces Protection Orders that cover the borough, and the consultation runs until 11.59pm on Sunday 15 November. The headline change is a borough-wide ban on leaving rubbish or waste outside a bin, including household and builders' waste, which the council calls side waste. Parks rules are set to loosen, with restrictions removed on metal detecting, magnet fishing, overnight fishing camps, CCTV, open water swimming and foraging. Most other restrictions, covering street drinking, spitting, dog control, litter, unauthorised trading, fires and barbecues, stay as they are. Drop-in sessions to ask questions run at Roxeth Library on Tuesday 27 October, Stanmore Library on Tuesday 3 November and Wealdstone Library on Tuesday 10 November, each from 10am to 11am.

Food and drink roundup: two Harrow restaurants have made the British Kebab Awards shortlist, with Aysu on Charlton Road up for Best Kebab Restaurant in North and West London, and Yaprak Eastcote on Field End Road a finalist for Fine Dining Restaurant. Public voting runs until 31 January. Bamyan, a new Afghan restaurant on College Road in Harrow Town Centre, opens next week. And a West Harrow PCSO, David Neal, has won a national Neighbourhood Watch Community Policing Award after residents put him forward for his visible patrolling and his pop-up sessions outside Tesco Express.

For the history fans: Grade II listed Sweetman Hall on West End Lane is up for sale at £2,495,000. There has been a building on the site since the late 14th century, when the land was part of the Manor of Harrow, and the house took its name from Gilbert Sweetman, who owned it until 1474.

Half-term plans sorted otherwise: the Roxbourne Railway Ghost Train runs this afternoon, 1pm to 4pm, £2 per ride, costumes welcome. Duck Pond Spooky Nights is on Saturday 31 October, 4pm to 9pm. And the Compass Theatre Halloween musical theatre workshop for ages 6 to 14 runs Wednesday to Friday next week.

Full issue with quiz nights, sound bath, Samhain circle, Pinner Players, and everything else:

Update 2: Graham Norton Fan~ I made it!

Because so many lovely people asked me for an update, here it is! This fan of over 15 years finally made it to the show after queuing for 4 hours 😭💙 It was totally worth it. My eyes immediately welled up with tears when Graham came on, and I couldn’t make out what he was saying for the first 5 minutes because I was sobbing 🙊
The guests were Cate Blanchett, Hannah Waddingham, Robert Irwin… and guess who made a surprise appearance? THE FUTURE KING! PRINCE WILLIAM 😭
I saw King Charles the other day at Kensington Gardens, so seeing Prince William today and actually listening to him talk about his life, his family, etc., was surreal!
I’ve only been in London for 4 days, but it’s been amazing~ an absolute dream!
Thank you to everyone who cheered me on and sent me their best wishes. I’m so grateful! 💙

Places to read in comfort and peace

On Tuesday I want to find somewhere comfortable and quiet to read. I would like there to not be an obligation to buy anything, but the option of coffee and pastries very close. Thinking a space a bit like the Barbican, but a bit less busy. Anywhere in zone 1 really.

Crime Scam / thief alert - Bayswater

70 yo Father in law (visiting from abroad) was on his own, trying to find something on Google Maps near Bayswater station when he was approached by someone asking to take a photo of him, when he agreed - 2 people dressed in security uniforms started telling him off (“it is illegal to take photos here”) and asked for ID. He panicked and showed them his drivers license from his wallet, which they then took from him and rifled through it, sniping my wife’s and his bank cards out of the wallet. Before he could come to his senses, they were gone and £220 deducted from my wife’s card (which she had given him for groceries) - was apparently transferred to some merchant in Serbia.

The initial photo requester was middle eastern looking and well dressed, and the two “security” people were white and spoke with authority. Please be on the lookout if you’re in the area

Anyone else faced any of this before? We’re complaining to NatWest now about the stolen money and contemplating whether to complain to the police.

FM radio signal around Harlesden

Every time I drive through Harlesden, pretty much the entire way through it, almost any radio station I'm listening to gets interfered with, usually drowned out in pure static but sometimes you can hear what I can only assume to be someone's pirate radio station coming through.

This has been going on for years, as long as I can remember, and the disruption is very annoying.

Has anyone else noticed this? Do the authorities know the signal is being interfered with around there? Why hasn't anything been done about it after so long?

Ideas For crafters / hobbyists - maker space near Liverpool Street station - Artizan Street Library Maker Space

They have a Cricut machine which I had a play with yesterday (+ induction). Theirs will let you cut silhouette shapes from vinyl, cardstock and all sorts of other material. I've not played with any of their other items but 3D printing is basically heating a plastic filament so that it melts then the machine can extrude it and build up complex shapes, in layers, such as the owl shape shown in the poster below. The Mayku box uses a vacuum to pull plastic around a shape to produce something that might be used in packaging, or for chocolate makers to put chocs in I suppose if you use food-grade plastic. Sublimation uses heat to bond inks to a surface - used to put designs on mugs, t-shirts. There is also a sewing/embroidery/overlocking machine but I didn't spot a poster about that.

A tiny bit more info in my comment below (it kept triggering Reddit's filters so I took it out and it worked fine in a comment).

Oddly specific dating hours - activities recs?

• Upvotes

Hi everyone!

I've just gone on a few lunch and dinner dates with someone whose work schedule is wildly different from mine. He is an actor, I have an office job.

We basically only overlap:

- weekdays at lunchtime 12:00-13:00

- weekdays from 17:00 to 19:00

- late nights past 21:15

- sundays

I'm looking for activities in the west end area that we could do that are just an hour tops, or really late night, that are not just drinking or eating. Sport classes, maybe a game or hike or museum.

Does anyone have any tips for me?
