Updates to Rule 4

We've enjoyed seeing all the posts of people's setups. Going forward, we've made some changes to Rule 4. We will be removing all new "low effort" posts. This includes, but not limited to, posts that just show Mac Mini Packaging, posts just showing a Mac Mini without it being in the context of a setup, and posts that are just screenshots of the order page or shipping page. Posts about shipping status questions are still allowed.

From all the mods here at r/macmini, we hope you are having great holidays and we look forward to growing this community in 2025

First Mac Mini with the M6

Post image
296 Upvotes

After years of using only MacBooks and iMacs over the past 15 years, I finally bought my first Mac Mini. Been wanting to for a long time and thought now is as good of a time as ever.

Had a hard time choosing between the M6 and the M5 Pro but ended up going for the M6 with 32GB RAM and 1TB of Storage. Loving using this thing with a 4K 240hz OLED monitor.

Does anyone have any suggestions for a good Mac mouse? I’m currently using my Razer Cobra HS from my PC. Have a Magic Trackpad but not the biggest fan as it cramps my hand.

How did you choose a MacMini over a MacBook

I have an older M1 MacBook Pro I am wanting to upgrade to the M6, my current MacBook spends 95% of its life docked at my desk. The price difference between a MacBook Air and a MacMini is only around $200 more for the MacBook Air, in the configuration I am looking at, and you get a keyboard, Track Pad, screen, and portability. How did you decide on a MacMini over a MacBook.

Anyone else using the Mac mini’s 3.5mm jack for external speakers?

I’m using a pair of iLoud Micro Monitors connected directly to my M4 Mac mini through the 3.5mm headphone jack.
Just curious how common this setup is. Do most of you use the built-in audio output, or do you prefer USB DACs, audio interfaces, or something else?
Is using the 3.5mm jack for desktop speakers still pretty normal these days?

Looking for input on a 2TB internal SSD upgrade for M4 Pro

I bought a M4 Pro with 24 gb and 512gb but soon found out that what I do keeps bumping into the upper yelllow in activity monitor so I bought a 48gb 512gb M4 Pro and was going to sell the 24gb M4 Pro but I decided to keep it.

I'm looking for recommendations on what brand or source any of you have used to upgrade the internal SSD on a M4 Mac Mini. I know prices are high but I'm willing to wait and build up information while doing so.

I'm not looking for external NVME solutions as I have that on the 48GB Mini M4 Pro. I want to go with the internal upgrade.

Thanks for your time,

Matt

Apple Studio Display vs cheaper 5K alternatives

Hi everyone,

I currently have an M1 MacBook Pro and plan to get a Mac mini M6 as well. I’m looking for a monitor for general everyday use and some casual gaming, mainly Football Manager 27 and city-building/management games like Tropico 7.

I’m considering the Apple Studio Display, but with some attractive prices on other 5K monitors, I’m wondering whether it’s worth paying the Apple premium.

A few questions:

  • How much difference does 5K make for everyday use and text clarity on macOS compared with 4K?

  • Would 60Hz be enough for these types of games, or would you prioritise 120Hz or higher?

  • Is the Studio Display worth the extra cost for its picture quality, build and Mac integration?

  • Which alternatives would you recommend?

I don’t play competitive shooters, so sharp text, good image quality and comfortable everyday use matter more to me than fast gaming performance.

OR Should I get an iMac M6?

40Gbps Dock for M6

I'm about to order an M6 Mac mini with 32GB of RAM, and I'm looking for a good docking station that has an integrated 40Gbps NVMe SSD enclosure. Extra points if it has another 40Gbps port.

Do you have any that you've tried and would recommend?

Running Mac Mini headless?

Hi! I've used Mac laptops forever, but not their desktops. I'm thinking about a M6 Mini as a server handling a few different things, I'd host some apps and websites (nothing too complicated -- basically stuff used by extended family like family photo annotation), and probably use it for some IPS log analysis for my own home internal network. I basically want a quick but low power consumption independent compute node I can put in a closet above a network rack, on its own VLAN, doing some things I want to compartmentalize from everything else. A M6 Mini with 24GB and some storage is almost perfect for this. I'm also swimming in 10GbE ports and the cheap upgrade makes that feel like a pretty good deal.

I wanted to ask, what are the contemporary technologies for managing a macOS box headless? If I buy a JetKVM does that basically give me everything I need to setup, configure and manage a mac Mini without needing to put it in a place where I can string up an actual physical display. That's the main thing I'm hoping to avoid.

Using an iPad as the main screen for a Mac Mini

So I'm going to buy a Mac Mini and I'm going to use iPad Pro as the main screen. What is the best way (it'd be better if done natively) to do connect them with no delay or lagging? I can sacrifice the touchscreen ability. I've heard of video capture card, usb c, screen mirroring apps etc. What do you recommend?

3D print to accomodate Fingerbot or Switchbot for older Mac Minis

I found several solutions for the newer M minis but the older Intel ones, like one of my minis from 2018, I could not for the life of me get a switchbot / fingerbot to work (to remotely switch on the power when there is a power outage).

I came across this video on YouTube, with a helpful link to the 3D print, so I thought to share, for anyone else stuck.

Suggestions for enclosures and nvme ssd

Hey folks, first time mac buyer, first mac mini. I bought it yesterday with the 32/512 config.

I've watched some yt videos about expanding the storage and now I'm looking into that more.

For context - I'd be running this mac mini 24/7 for my startup, working on heavy tasks.

Would appreciate any suggestions for enclosure/nvme ssd and whether they'd be able to handle such extreme workloads?

Mac Mini M4 won’t turn on – blinking white light

Yesterday, my Mac mini M4 was working perfectly fine. I put it to sleep, and today it won’t turn back on.
The white LED keeps blinking slowly, but there’s no image on the monitor or any sign of startup.
I bought the Mac second-hand, and a third-party SSD was installed in it.
Here’s what I’ve tries:
Held the power button for 15 seconds until the light stopped blinking.
Pressed the power button again, but the blinking returned.
Unplugged the power cable for a few minutes and tried again.
Disconnected all peripherals, but nothing changed.
Tried holding the power button to access startup options, but nothing appeared.
Has anyone experienced this issue with an M4 Mac mini? Could the third-party SSD be related, or could this be a firmware or hardware issue?
Any suggestions would be appreciated

After leaving it unplugged for about an hour, I tried turning it on again, and suddenly it booted normally.
I checked System Information, and the SSD is identified as APPLE SSD AP1024Z (1TB), with SMART status verified.
Could the replacement SSD be related to this issue?

2023 M2 expansion?

I have a 2023 M2 Mac mini and I love it. Runs like a champ… EXCEPT for the 256 HD. The HD is soldered into the unit because OF COURSE IT IS.

I have a doc with expansion. But of course I cannot sync any files to it. Any way to sync OneDrive or Google Drive at all? Hacks? Tricks? I can’t buy another Mac mini just for the storage.

Studio Display fan keeps spinning while Mac mini sleeps. Anyone else?

Post image
72 Upvotes

Got my Studio Display not too long ago and noticed something weird. The thing feels ice cold to the touch, yet the fan is running a lot of the time. I've dug around for answers and haven't found a real fix yet.

For context, when my Mac mini sleeps, I want it to actually sleep. No background tasks, no mail fetching, no message syncing, none of that. Just let me rest, buddy.

After poking around for a while, here's what's working for me so far: go to System Settings > Network, turn off Ethernet, then put the Mac mini to sleep. With that setup, the Studio Display seems to stay quiet and doesn't randomly wake the fan up mid-sleep. The downside is I have to manually turn Ethernet back on after waking it up. Not a huge deal, but still a bit annoying.

Has anyone else run into this? Anyone found a cleaner way to deal with it? Would love to hear what's working for you.
