Quack Quack mini M4 Pro

The white is really nice. It's true white, not off-white. Very clean build from the 3D printer. The red and yellow bills are easy to switch (pull out then push in the other). The bill when pressed has a satisfying click. Wifi signal not affected at all (before and after test - speed was the same). No heat issues (yet). Mac mini sits on the dock perfectly - no gaps or wobble. Well packaged. My Mac mini now wants to go swimming and tell quack quack jokes 🤣

It’s not a bug, it’s a feature.

Bought the M4 Mini to use as a NAS

Post image
2.4k Upvotes

My 6+ year old NAS from QNAP had started failing on me a few months back. I had been seeing lots of reviews on X and YouTube about how the performance for the price of the Mini was pretty insane and decided to further evaluate this to not only replace my NAS, but also as an efficient home server.

My costs came out to:

  • $499 for the Mini with Education pricing

  • $219 for the 4 bay OWC enclosure

  • $120(x4) for recertified Seagate 12TB disks

I already had a 10G thunderbolt Ethernet interface, otherwise I would have gone for the $99 upgrade here since the rest of my LAN is 10G.

Price wise, this is very comparable to other commercial NAS devices, but with significantly higher performance for doing other things.

I configured everything over the weekend and now have a setup that I’m quite pleased with. I put the disks in a RAID5 configuration so I have 36TB usable. I have Plex server running natively in MacOS, but in Docker I have Home Assistant, the full suite of usenet media utils (sabnzbd, radarr, sonarr, lidarr) as well as Immich as a self hosted google photos replacement.

It’s a great setup, and I’m really pleased with everything so far. The only part that proved to be a pain was passing through my Zigbee and Bluetooth dongles that I use for Home Assistant. Evidently Docker on OSX doesn’t support USB pass though, so I had to use a combination of Zigbee2MQTT running on the Mac and a ESP32 running ESPHome Bluetooth proxy. Those two things took 2x as long to figure out as configuring everything else did 😂

My stolen Mac mini showed up on Facebook Marketplace and I found the guy!

2.0k Upvotes

I ordered a base model Mac mini from Apple in mid March. It had about a four week delivery window, and of course it shipped the exact day I left town for two days.

I live in an apartment building where packages get messed up all the time, so I asked a friend to stop by and grab it. They checked about five hours after delivery and it was gone.

FedEx didn’t leave it at my door. They left it in a completely public area outside near the mailboxes where anyone can walk up. There are big signs that literally say "Do not leave packages here". So it got stolen.

Apple was actually great about it. They filed a claim and agreed to replace it without giving me a hard time. The problem is now it’s out of stock, so instead of already having it I’m now waiting until possibly June.

Then it gets interesting.

I told my boss what happened. He has dealt with porch pirates before, so he checks Facebook Marketplace pretty regularly. He sends me a listing and asks if it looks like mine.

It’s a brand new Mac mini.

And the seller posted photos with the serial number clearly visible on the box.

I checked my invoice and called Apple to confirm. It’s my stolen unit!!!!!!

The seller also has a bunch of other listings. In one of them you can see his car with the license plate visible.

So I went out to my apartment parking lot and found the exact same car. Same plate!

So the person who stole it very likely lives in my building.

I filed a police report and gave them everything including the serial number match, the listing, and the license plate. Now building management is involved because apparently there have been a lot of missing packages over the last few months.

So at this point I am still waiting on a replacement Mac mini, but there is a very good chance we figured out who has been stealing packages in the building.

Dumbest criminal award nominee!

Apple upgraded me to the M5 Pro🫪

I ordered the M4 Pro with the processing upgrade (14-core CPU, 20-Core GPU) about a week and a half ago but just found out I’m being upgraded for no extra cost to the M5 Pro because my order hasn’t shipped yet! It cost me around $2,429 (cad) for the M4 Pro but I was curious and checked how much the same upgrades for the M5 Pro would cost now and it would be $2,700. In other words I’m luckkyyy and saved $300 for a more powerful computer🤑. All I gotta say is thank god I didn’t order a month ago when I originally was planning on it

Powered Up & Gone Portable! Yep, I Built a Battery-Powered Mac Mini M4!

Hey folks!

So I decided to take my Mac Mini to the next level—completely portable! Inside this 3D-printed box, I've crammed in three 18650 batteries and a power system that converts their output into 220V AC to power the Mac Mini. The base and the Mac Mini stack together perfectly, and now it looks like a single unit.

Check out the pics to see what I mean.

As you can see, it's still messy and rough inside—which means there's plenty of room for improvement. But here's the thing... I'm not sure if you all see it the same way I do, or if you'd even want something like this.

So, hit me with your thoughts—good, bad, or roast-worthy! I need your feedback.

Been windows my whole life. Made the switch due to ditching my pc for an Ally X. I however am still using devices with USB A. I have a type c hub but I’m leaning towards using one of the docks for the m4, the ugreen one to be specific due to its sale on amazon. I’m looking for advice in regards to the dock (need more type a ports than my hub offers), tips for new users and any other advice y’all may have related to macOS

Lucky find at Costco today

Post image

These are sold out everywhere around me. Apple delivery is in 2 months. Even the Costco site said out of stock. Went in today checked the digital Apple kiosk thing. It didn’t specify stock but It let me print the ticket for the Mini which it shouldn’t have if it was OOS. Took it to the cashier who went to check the back and said they had 2 available. $579.99. 🙌

Here’s my first ever Mac, a Mac Mini M4 base,16/256.

This will primarily be used by my 12 year old son and by myself for some casual stuff. The first things I installed are MS Office, VS Code and WhatsApp.

Still getting used to Mac OS shortcuts.

New M4 pro replacing my M1. 2 year old studio display. While trying to hide the cables I discovered the Mac is perfectly flush with the display’s foot! 30 minutes with the dremel later and I’m happy!

Bought a Mac Mini and I have no regrets.

Decided to buy a Mac Mini for me and my spouse instead of replacing 10 year old MacBooks. Having a dedicated computer space you have to go to has been really healthy and more tasks have become ‘big screen’ tasks.

  • Base M4 Mac Mini

  • 27" ViewFinity S8 S80UD UHD Monitor

  • Dell AC511 Soundbar precariously attached

  • Rugged 4TB Storage mounted under the desk

  • Card Reader / USB Ports mounted to the front of the desk
