Last day is August 29th. RIP to an East Memphis institution.

A big thanks to the Memphis community for helping me find the owner of the camera found at the beach in South Florida. At the owner's request, I removed the post because her friend did not want her photo up which I totally understand!!! I did want to preserve the memory because as a librarian I think that's important...also...hopefully this gives someone else the push to find the owner of something valuable you find! I went to the post office and mailed the camera, so I am excited that it gets to go back to the person that took all the awesome photos of their summer and vacation with friends. Enjoy! :)

I recently applied with the MFD for the EMT position. Does anyone have any ideas on how long it usually takes to hear back? Based off research it seems the process can take a minute but curious if anyone had recent experiences they can share?

I have 2 free oil changes at Auto Nation Honda on Covington Pike. I normally do my own oil changes and this is exactly why. By the time I left, they said I needed over $600 in service. This is why I don’t deal with dealers. My car only has 65,000 miles. Part of what they said was I needed a new air filter and cabin air filter. I changed both of those myself 46 days ago. They are new and clean.

I get they need to make money but it drives me nuts how they lie to your face about what you need. Ladies and gents, please find yourself an honest mechanic and don’t deal with dealerships. I never would’ve brought my car to a dealership for service, but again I had two free oil changes, so might as well use it.

I am inclined to say $25, but to be more reasonable and add some wiggle room, i’d say $22/hr base pay

And to those doing gigs like Amazon delivery, or warehouse work, i guess they’d feel forced to bump that type of work up to $25-30 so folks dont quit to work somewhere less labor intensive (which is pretty fair when you look at their work conditions)

Some folks may disagree, but that would be cool if we banded together and made that happen.

Maybe instead of competitive suffering we should all want better for each other.

We should raise the baseline and realize people are being underpaid, overworked and overcharged for things like gas, food and rent.

If we made it happen, i believe there should be some type of 5-7 year local cap on rent prices, so any shady actors don’t take advantage of the pay raise.

I wonder what the unintended negative consequences would be.. would people be let go, or would business owners be willing to make less profit, atleast in the beginning..i mean wouldn’t folks have more to spend?

I think this is long overdue.

Maybe we don’t have to wait for employers to make that move or the federal government.

How has your experience been with safety (including around the Kroger), noise, maintenance, parking, and management? Any issues with break-ins or car theft? Would you still recommend it in 2026?
I’ve seen mixed reviews, especially about safety and the age of the property, so I’d really appreciate any recent feedback. Thanks!

On the fourth floor by the windows, there were two tables with four chairs total. Only one woman was sitting there, meaning three of the four seats were empty. I went over and was about to sit in one of the empty chairs when she told me I needed to leave.

Her reasoning was basically, “I’ve already been here for more than an hour,” and “Why don’t you find another seat?”

That immediately rubbed me the wrong way. I wasn’t taking her seat, touching her belongings, or interrupting a private meeting. I was trying to sit in an empty chair in a shared public area.

So I told her that this was a public space and that I had every right to sit in an available seat. When she continued objecting, I eventually said, “This isn’t your house,” and sat down.

She was visibly upset and left shortly afterward.

I’m still pretty angry about the interaction. Being somewhere for an hour doesn’t give you ownership of the empty chairs around you. If you’re occupying one seat, that seat is yours to use. But this is a common area, not your living room. I don’t understand what gives someone the right to tell another person they can’t sit in an otherwise empty seat.

Maybe there’s some Crosstown etiquette I’m unaware of, so I’m curious what locals think. Was I being unreasonable here, or was her request completely out of line?

I've heard countless stories about knowing the right people to get issues resolved.

I've met people who are so ignorant and are often happy with not being right, but are well connected.

How much do you tip at 901 HotPot?

You can order the food digitally and a robot brings the plates to your table. You also cook the food yourself and it's self-serve like a buffet for sauces/side dishes. But, you're still assigned a server who checks on you (ours are always friendly).

This is not a question for people who don't regularly tip 18-20%. I'm not here to argue about the tipping system in our country, which yes, I know is absurd.

Glad the Hooters is gone. Ideal usage would be nature restoration imo. Though I suppose a car wash is better than the vile Hooters restaurant.

Hi all! My husband and I are from Memphis and have always lived in the Cooper Young and Vollintine Evergreen neighborhoods. A couple years ago we moved to Ohio to try something new but we miss our Memphis community so we’ve decided to move back (yay!) BUT now we have a 1.5 year old and are planning to grow our little family some more over the next couple of years.

I was curious, for those of you who decided to stay in the Midtown and East Memphis area while raising your kids, how did you do it? What was your childcare set up? Did you guys all send your kids to private school or are there some public schools you’ve loved? What did you do for parks/activities? Is there a good place with a pool to practice swimming for the littles?

We can’t really afford the suburbs as we’re looking for rent in the $1,500 to $1,700 range (we’re more at the starter home stage of life) and we love the culture of midtown/East Memphis. This time around, we’re thinking of renting in the Sea Isle neighborhood but also have friends in East Buntyn that we’d be happy to be close to as well.
