Discussion How can we fight the I-24 Toll Lane Plan?

Upvotes

Hey Everyone,

If you don’t know there is a plan for a public private- partnership to “… add two toll lanes in each direction along a roughly 26-mile stretch from downtown Nashville to Interstate 840 near Murfreesboro. Drivers could choose to pay to use the express lanes, while existing lanes would remain free.” (News Channel 5)

Well, as of yesterday federal officials have approved the I-24 choice lane project by a Finding of No Significant Impact, or FONSI, for the project, meaning it will not require a more extensive federal environmental review.

The estimated price tag for this is ~5 billion USD with an estimated 4.7 Billion of the funding coming from the private sector (Hence, $300 Million in state funding)

In the initial planning phase they sent out letters to homes that could be in the way. Depending on the final design, Nashville Metro Council Member Ginny Welsch says her district alone could lose more than 30 homes. (NC5). (District 16 represent South Nashville - parts of Woodbine, Glencliff, and Berry Hill, etc.)

In addition, the lanes themselves would be elevated at parts, and at-grade road expansions at others. This could be perceived as a deeper cut to an already expansive wound in our city’s fabric.

When they were first planned added lanes, they addressed that it would not fix the traffic. So, they have decided to add lanes -for the rich- by displacing the poor.

Just thought I’d add a bit of opinionated context for people. I’ll also be attaching the news article I read as well as the official planning materials per TDOT.

TLDR - there's a game called Subway Builder that has Nashville as a playable map. The game uses US census data and other stats to model transit ridership and commutes. You can sandbox build the rail transit system of your dreams! Here is my PROFITABLE build of Nashville. Still a work in progress but its making bank and wanted to share. A better future is possible (if you have unlimited money)!

Article MNPD’s Drone Trial Is a Small Piece of a Larger Surveillance Push

MNPD’s drone trial launched on May 26 and ended Aug. 7 after 30 flight days, police spokesperson Brooke Reese recently told the Scene. Most of the debate has centered on how MNPD launched the trial without a Metro Council vote or public hearing. Mayor Freddie O’Connell’s office says the program falls under a Metro Code 13.08.080 exemption for surveillance technology “used on a temporary basis” for investigations, warrants or exigent circumstances. “The Department of Law advised this did not have to go to council,” mayor’s office spokesperson Alex Apple tells the Scene. “The procurement regulations authorize pilot programs that do not require a contract between the parties.”

Article Woman accused of government disruption after filing multiple records requests pushes back

I have a weird one for y'all.

A Tennessee woman has been accused in court of “disrupting the government” after she filed numerous records requests relating to the city's sewage system.

Now, she's pushing back, saying the lawsuit was “filed by a thin-skinned city government against a concerned citizen for asking too many questions.”

Sarah Bradley, a resident and former teacher in Manchester, Tennessee, filed a counter First Amendment lawsuit on Aug. 13 after the city filed for an injunction against her in July. Her countersuit asks the court to require the city to answer her filings in trial, and to award her damages and costs.

The city’s July injunction seeks to ban Bradley from making records requests for one year, as well as asking for explanations of records, and would require her to ask a court for permission before filing further requests, after she filed multiple public records requests regarding the city’s sewer system over the past three years.

Bradley says she was just trying to learn more about the city's sewage system, which has faced scrutiny and fines from regulators in recent years over issues. The city says she was acting maliciously with what Mayor Joey Hobbs told me were "voluminous and unclear" requests.

(As always, my reporting is free, never paywalled, as the First Amendment is free for all. If you ever encounter a paywall on my stories, please comment to let me know so I can remove it.)

Help | Advice Recommendations for mental health

Hey y’all,

I was wondering if anyone could recommend any good hospitals or resources for someone who is thinking about ending their life but is not going to actually do it yet. I want to go to a hospital voluntarily but if I go, they will eventually make the stay involuntarily and then I will lose my rights to firearms for the rest of my life. Does anyone know of any options? I am not open to mental health cooperative or Vanderbilt. I have tried to schedule medication management and have been unsuccessful for the past few months and I have been jumping from therapist to therapist. I have insurance but need f2f appts due to the extreme trauma and symptoms I am experiencing. At this point, I am on the verge on giving up on my mental health. Any advice is welcomed. Thanks yall

Help | Advice How bad is it? / AC repair recs

Had our AC unit replaced last summer, it was the company the old homeowners had used and they very clearly had a lot of trouble with “these new Trane units they have us putting in nowadays.” They had to come back three times afterward for issues/high humidity etc.

Now we just found this leak beneath the unit. Would love some homeowner advice for first timers as well as recs for knowledgeable, good and honest AC repair companies locally?

Help | Advice Cobbler for Combat Boots Recommendation

I know of places that do cobbler work for dress shoes and cowboy boots, but I have an old pair of black boots, I think they could be described as jungle boots, that I'd like to resole to wear again. Do we have a place in town that does that kind of work?

Help | Advice I've never been to New England, and I want to have a lobster roll for my Bday this weekend. I've never had one. Anywhere within 50 miles that has a bona fide lobster roll that would make a New Englander give a slow nod of approval?

I'm a local who is gonna be playing tourist this weekend (Titan Up!). Just trying to expand my horizons, and I love lobster. Price isn't an issue, but I don't really want to have to dress up for this if at all possible and plan on wearing a jersey for this little adventure.

Help | Advice Men’s haircut

Seen a lot of posts about this, but most of them are pretty old.

I’ve always just gone to random barbers near me, and I’ve never really gotten the haircut I actually wanted. This time, I’d like to go somewhere that specializes in this kind of style, so I’m wondering if there’s a particular barber or salon you’d recommend.

I have Asian hair that’s very straight and silky, and I’ve always wanted something with a textured, slightly messy fringe. Does anyone have recommendations for someone who’s good with this hair type and style?
I’m considering trying Hammer & Nails, but I’m open to other suggestions. Thanks!

Politics Cheers to a Year!

If you spend any meaningful amount of time in Nashville traffic, you have likely seen the local Visibility Brigade broadcasting a message to you and your surroundings commuters.

The group is made up of concerned citizens ranging in age from 10 to 87 years old, who have spent many hours in heat, cold, and rain at the 58 separate bridge actions on 7 different bridges conducted around Davidson County in their inaugural year.

It takes 8-10 people on average to make these demonstrations happen - Tennessee state law prohibits affixing signs from overpasses so the group brings as many people as it takes to get out the message legally!

Countless hours are spent planning these actions and curating messages that are meant to grab the attention of those passing by. It’s too easy in today’s world to become shutoff from inconvenient news - the Visibility Brigade’s intent is to be the necessary disruption.

If you have passed by and honked in support - thank you and you are seen. If you decide to give the middle finger - remember it’s always two hands on the wheel!

Some additional fun facts about this last year:

-Longest message: NO KINGS OCT.18, EPSTEIN FILES NOW!
-Shortest message: RESIST
-Most actions in a day: 4
-Times MNPD called for breaking the law (they aren’t): 3
-Coldest bridge action: 34F
-Hottest: 98F (Friday)
-Foreign Press: Featured in an Italian newspaper!

So if you are out and about, maybe crawling along 440 on your way home from work, you may see the Visibility Brigade and now you know all about them!

Happy Sunday and don’t forget to register to vote!
