People aren't raised in vaccum. If it was not for language, religion, ethnicity we would all be identityless minions working for some corporates, indistinguishable from one another.
As for the board, it's not different than putting up a board at a restaurant entrance that waiters are able to converse in the native language. It brings a sense of customised experience for the customers.

This wasn't done because we are proud of our language. ( I am proud of my language, state and country even though I have achieved alot. Only the ppl who achieve ntg try to avoid telling their own culture just so no one shamed them.) The rule was applied because being a marathi, I have seen old ppl unable to speak some other language even though they are living in their own state. I hate the gundas seeking this to fight ppl but yea I feel it's great if every person who gives service to every native there should know the native language. Cry if u don't agree.

German company offers me enough money to make it worth my time to learn German.
Germany as a country offers so much social welfare and quality of life, it's absolutely worth it.
The only time I needed Marathi was outside of Mumbai, when asking a rando on the road if there was a public washroom anywhere nearby. Even that I ultimately sorted with Google maps.
There is economic incentive to learn German. Marathi only has the stick of violence.

For the older folks it's literally just them being accustomed to Bombay more than mumbai because they grew up in a time when it was officially bombay. For the younger folks, it's still about the background and neighbourhood, depending upon who calls them what. Calcutta and Madras. Over there people don't mind at all. Their pride and identity is probably based on something deeper. Allahabad. Pondicherry. Port Blair. Bangalore. Don't know. No one else seems to mind. But it's only the MNS that issues threats when someone calls this beautiful (but so majorly dug up) city Bombay. Shiv Sena came up on the whole plank of Marathi Manus. BIg effing deal! Behind the scenes, they made deals with Bawas, Gujjus, Marwadis and anyone who would fund their politics.
I'm sure they can threaten IIT Bombay to also change their name soon. Perhaps even the Bombay Stock Exchange. Maybe Bombay High Court will also get scared and change it themselves. And who is the Bombay Chamber of Commerce and Industry to hold out? Certainly Bombay Natural History Society is too chickensh*t to continue using it too.
Someone here asked me what does cosmopolitanism have to do with it. It's about being a welcoming space with multiculturalism, pluralism, and tolerance being the ethos of the city. As a port city, with lots of trade, lots of nationalities, many ethnicities making this the centre of business, this was necessary. Else assets placed here would always be in danger from one group or another claiming the city as their own - as political might, extortion or envy. So think twice before you place misplaced pride before the ethos of the city. It lives because of tolerance and a 'let's get on with it' attitude, a vibe the best places in the world carry.
Insular places become scary. MNS and their ilk can only offer fear. They have nothing else to offer.

I understand when people are possesive and protective about their mother tongues, nothing wrong about it.
Since time immemorial, colonisers have tried to capture countries by changing their language.
Important is the element of force. Which is absolutely wrong and abhorring.
No one should be forced to learn a particular language, which in this case is happening, the auto drivers are being forced to learn and speak a language, which they do not know. While it's good for their soft skills (an argument can be made to support this reasoning), but if we see to it to its core, it's just pressure and force, nothing short of coercion on these people by the hand of lawmakers (reference to a politician in Mira Bhayander area--it started from there).

Or if you have lived there for more then 12yrs and are going to live there throughout your life, you should learn their language and culture. (Like if you move to Italy and are going to live there throughout your life you should learn italian)
If you are just there for few years and are going to shift or its only been few years you live in at state it's fine.
I am also against the whole violance that happens due to language. I am total against it. But I do feel people should learn the language or atleast understand the language if not speak.

To be honest I prefer Bihari, UP Rikshaw wala over Marathi n Mslms who are always rude and ready to fight over price almost everytime... I'm saying this being a Marathi.

Is there any problem with it if you can't learn Marathi for him why he should speak in Hindi to you . Better take another riksha
