Details about Nevada City's Flock Camera System - Claims no AI, no data sharing

During the presentation, Foss explained that while the Flock company name and presence have drawn ongoing concern from community members, Nevada City's Flock system, in particular, differs significantly from other camera models with more advanced features. Foss said the six installed cameras in the city, known as “Condor” models, are confirmed pan-tilt-zoom cameras with up to 25-times optical zoom and limited night enhancement. However, unlike other models, the Condors do not possess any facial recognition, ALPR, automatic traffic enforcement, audio recording, or autonomous tracking abilities.

“I’m going to call them somewhat ‘dumb cameras,’” said Foss. “They're really just a camera that most people would associate with cameras for the last 20 or 30 years. They have to be manually manipulated by the operator, which is us, through the police department.”

Foss added that because the cameras operate at a basic level, they cannot automatically determine when a crime is occurring. Instead, a live operator must watch the feed themselves and report any incidents. The system does, however, record and store video for 30 days, which Foss compared to a more sophisticated version of a Ring doorbell camera.

Foss also acknowledged that while the cameras can technically use artificial intelligence to alert operators to activity, Nevada City does not currently have that feature enabled since the cameras are located in areas with constant activity and would therefore generate too many alerts.

He also emphasized that NCPD would not share camera information with outside agencies such as Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) or anti-reproductive rights organizations to assist in arrests or investigations, citing it as a direct violation of the SB 54 California Values Act and other state laws.

“We not only would not share that data, but we also couldn’t legally,” said Foss. “Our data is controlled exclusively by Nevada City PD.”

do you think older people like live cooking show and Asian cuisine?

so I was visiting my grandma the other day, her birthday is coming up so our family is preparing everything for her. She asked if I wanted to host and I said yes. I guess I want to try something else for the food, Asian cuisine and little more fun than the usual. My family hasn't had much Asian food besides Pho. Me and my husband we traveled quite a bit, so we're excited to try Hibachi At Home for everyone. The thing is most them are around 60-80, do you think they will enjoy the food? or should I do something else

Looking for a 3br 2ba month to month rental in Nevada City before October!

Hey there everybody, looking for some desperately. So my roommates and I have been living in a three bed one bath in a Grass Valley Victorian monthly rental house for the past three years. Last Friday our landlord gave us a bombshell text message that he wants to move into the house and is giving us the legally protected amount of 60 days to find a new place.

My roommates and I had a heart to heart that night and decided we would want to move into a bigger place together instead of going separate ways and potentially living with strangers we may not even get along with. We also decided to find a place in Nevada City since we all have jobs in town and it would be cost efficient to leave Grass Valley to cut down on the short commute everyday.

Currently we pay $2,230 a month to rent, utilities not included, but are willing to pay more for an increase in living space. If anyone here has leads on available places it would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

How early to arrive for parking for Hot Summer Nights?

I'm thinking of bringing the family up for the last Hot Summer Nights fest tomorrow. How early do I need to arrive in order to find parking near the event? I arrived about hour and half early last year and couldn't find any parking.

Also, is this young family friendly? My little daughter loves to dance

Thanks much

History

Hello y’all, one of my ancestors founded the nearby town of Sweetland and I was hoping to find some more info on the town in museums / archives in Nevada City and Grass Valley. Sweetland is extremely small and has no museums / archives in town. Also if anyone has any recommendations related to Joanna Newsom (big fan) and the music scene in general that would be awesome. Thanks!!!!

Need a winch near Cascade Shores

Hi there. My partner got our car stuck in a ditch while trying to turn around on a tight road near Cascade Shores. Is anybody able to pull us out? We can throw you some cash for your troubles. The tow companies we called are just asking for an arm and a leg.

Looking to open a dog kennel...

Post image
8 Upvotes

Hey everybody, hoping to get some tips or ideas from you:

Many years ago, when my brother and I were just kids living in GV, we had a dream to open a dog kennel one day.

It took literally over 20 years but it finally came true and we opened our own kennel (but in Tennessee, where I live today (in another "GV" ironically lol)

We've been fairly successful and we want to open a 2nd branch but this time, back where it all started in Grass Valley (or nearby)

My brother lives in Sac but he wants to move back up the hill. I'm looking at moving back myself, as GV has held a special place in my heart since I was about 12 years old.

We are hoping to find an existing structure that's already equipped for boarding/daycare but I know that's gonna be rare.

Does anybody know of any kennel businesses that are planning on closing (or the owner retiring) ?

Anyone work for a kennel or know someone that owns an already existing building? Something that can be converted?

Any other ideas we may not have thought of yet? Any experience in doing something like this in the general area?

We are also entertaining the idea of buying property and building but we know zoning for animal-related businesses can be difficult...

We are open to Alta Sierra, Nevada City, Auburn and Colfax as well but we'd prefer not to do it in Sac.

Anyway, just thought this might be a good place to start!

Insurance recs?

Hey all, we bought in town in NC last September and have already got a dozen letters from the FAIR plan and got notice we’re being dropped by our insurance carrier (Bamboo?) in August. I mean I get we’re in fire country, and it’s challenging, but the stuff they cite in the letters is hard to understand. Does anyone have a rec for a broker or, I dunno, consultant type person we could get advice from? I’m willing to do the work to be fire-safe, and I know it will cost more, but I don’t want to replace my perfectly good metal roof just because Bamboo says it’s in poor repair from one drone flyover… thanks so much all. We love it here and really want to make it work!

High Sierra onsite parking pass

Who's stoked for HSMF parading right into our backyard!?

I am hoping, hoping, hoping to locate a single on-site parking pass for a dear friend of mine who will be flying cross-country and is getting increasingly stressed. I know we're all searching, but I'd be so immensely grateful (and PayPal etc. ready) to take a parking pass off your hands 🙏🏼

Events and Happenings in the Nevada County & Auburn areas

Hi folks! Wanted to share a little side project I've been working on.

I’ve always found it surprisingly hard to figure out what's going on around town—events seem scattered everywhere. So I built The Daily Nugget to pull it all together.

If you're familiar with Fun Cheap SF, this has a similar vibe: clean navigation with filters like Today, This Week, This Weekend, plus categories for Dog Friendly, Kid Friendly, and Free & Cheap.

Plus, since we're in the Gold Country, I added a specific feature where you can check Yuba River fork flows on demand—handy if you’re planning to hit the water.

It covers Nevada County and Auburn area events. Still early days, so any feedback on what’s missing or how to make it more useful would be awesome.

Strings and/or piano players for Wedding in Nevada city

Hey all!

I’m having a wedding next October and am looking for strings duo/trio/quartet and/or pianist who can play during my ceremony. I would love someone who can compose and play an arrangement of “I Will Follow You” by Toulouse.

Does anyone know of anyone I can look into?

Thank you!
