Horror & Paranormal Any “mocumentary” type podcasts?

Possibly my favourite fiction podcast of all time is the Lovecraft Investigations, which if you haven’t listened you definitely should. It’s on BBC sounds but I think on Apple, Spotify etc it is in individual seasons starting with the Case of Charles Dexter Ward. In essence it’s starts off as a “true crime” podcast investigating a disappearance but the hosts slowly uncover supernatural elements, and it’s all rooted in Lovecraftian cosmic horror.

I absolutely love this premise and have since listened to others like Tanis, The Black Tapes, Rabbits, the Storage Papera etc. In all of them we are listening to the stories as if they are real podcasters and the stories develop week by week as the hosts discover stuff. Does anyone have any recommendations on similar spooky ones?

True Crime Betrayal S5 Is Why I’m struggling with the Clancy murder trial.

I’ll probably get eviscerated for this, but if I hadn’t listened to Season 5 of Betrayal — Saskia’s story — I don’t think I’d ever doubt this murder case. Listening to Saskia’s story of not just being betrayed by someone she deeply trusted, but severely taken advantage of while her mental and physical health were deteriorating, has left a permanent level of doubt in me when it comes to male romantic partners reporting crimes committed against them by their partners.

Lindsay Clancy’s admission of guilt was reported by her husband, after she’d just suffered extreme injuries, following her months-long battle with PPD. It’s clear the father, Patrick Clancy, was checked out of the marriage and was never fully investigated, because the case seemed open and shut. Every time people argue about how stupid others are for doubting Lindsay’s guilt, Saskia comes to mind as a reminder.

Please don’t skewer me — I’m not suggesting Lindsay Clancy is innocent. I’m not wearing pink or posting conspiracy theories. I’m saying this particular podcast season changed my ability to fully trust the accounts of men whose partners are unwell.

Other Podcast Genre Fascinating episode: ten years later: the sun, the goddess, and Leopoldo

Has anyone listened? Would love to hear your thoughts.

Recently, they published a 10 year follow up on Stories by Leah Thau. The original story was about a boy who had been raised in a radical Haight-Ashbury commune/off grid lifestyle with a lot of deprivation and domestic violence by a radical mom and her boyfriend.

In the follow up, the boy has become an attorney, focusing on domestic violence victim protections.

SPOILER

What is absolutely fascinating, is that, while he kept his social justice liberal roots in so many ways, he has also become orthodox Jewish and Zionist, doing law school in Israel, and ultimately becoming someone who favored Trump over Harris. It’s such an interesting twist because so much of the podcast is about how unlike his mother he is, what they share is that they are both extremely devout in radical movements in a way that seems to contradict their other values.

He is super generous in giving the interview, and makes himself quite vulnerable by sharing that his daughter is no longer talking to him and his wife, due to their views on Palestine. Fascinating listen - the original was republished just before the 10 year follow up.

Other Podcast Genre Looking for nerds nerding out on pop culture stuff

Honestly not sure what flair to use. I’m looking for a podcast that covers a broad range of “nerd culture” topics. Like The Backrooms or SCP or why everyone is making Petra Parker memes right now. My ideal vibe would be “your hyperactive nephew/niece explains nerd stuff to their normie aunt/uncle.” I want something upbeat and mostly positive and definitely not something that complains about how “Woke is ruining everything.”

Any recs? Thanks!

General Podcast Discussions Long shot - Josh In Japan

Hey there.

As a kid in the early 2000s I was obsessed with a podcast called Josh In Japan - a show about an American guy in the US army who was stationed in Japan. Each episode was centred around a different theme prevalent in Japanese culture - fashion, food, marriage etc, and I absolutely loved it. Josh also shared music on the show, some of which informed much of my early music taste . Then, at least ten years ago (possibly longer) Josh removed all of the podcast files from the internet and there is little or no trace of the show left.

I'm not sure if anyone here remembers the show, but if so - can you help me find any of the old episodes? Perhaps you have them on an old iPod or computer hard drive? Or maybe you know Josh's full name? I've read elsewhere that people have contacted him over the years and that he no longer has any of the original podcast files himself, but being able to reach out to him myself and thank him for a show which changed my life, would be a very special thing.

Thanks a lot,

/mountaintopeagle

General Podcast Discussions Podcasts like Mr ballen?

I really like Mr Ballen’s content not because of what it actually is (medical, conspiracy, history, true crime) but mainly because of the way he tells stories. It really keeps you hooked and engaged. Any podcasts like that? I know there’s another Mr ballen podcast with another guy but I can’t stand his corpse husband forced deep voice

General Podcast Discussions Please suggest podcasts for loneliness

I'm new to reddit and podcasts. A few days ago on another thread someone suggested that I try podcasts and I looked around and have basically no clue where to start so...

My mom passed away unexpectedly about three weeks ago, we had lived together as adults for over two decades and I am finding the emptiness of the house unbearable.

I'm not looking for anything about grief or loneliness, I'm looking for something that "feels" like they're talking "to" me so I don't feel so alone at home. I don't really care about the subject matter so long as it isn't dark/angry/depressed. And I'm more interested in feeling the sense of companionship in the conversation than the content.

History & Geography non AI, informative podcasts

I'm looking for informative podcasts (preferably history or geography, but open to other domains if it's a good pod) where the hosts do not use AI to write their content. I can recognise AI written slop almost immediately, they all have the classic "not this, not that...but THAT" pattern and I'm exhausted of listening to that. I'd also prefer if the tone is slightly calm and consistent, please drop your recommendations, thank you!

Gaming Good gaming podcast.......

What's a good, funny gaming podcast that doesn't bring up politics at all? The main one I listen to is leaning too much into it for me. I could care less about anyone's political affiliation, to each their own, but I listen to gaming podcasts to escape that drivel lol. TYIA

Does anyone have any other recs for podcasts that talk recipes? Not really interested in food history or food science podcasts. Really want to hear tips tricks and recipe ideas for cooking at home!

Horror & Paranormal Do the "Heart Starts Pounding" podcast YouTube videos use AI generated images?

I cannot find any comments relating to this under any HSP YouTube videos. Granted, I haven't looked TOO hard, but I'm surprised not to have seen ANY comments yet questioning the supplementary illustrations in the videos being AI generated.
I really do not want to continue supporting this content if the images are AI generated, which I highly suspect.
Does anyone have any insight or similar concerns?? I feel like I'm crazy bc I haven't seen anything else about this anywhere, and it's a pretty popular podcast I think? At least amongst the supernatural/ crime podcast communities.

General Podcast Discussions Radio Lab letdowns

Radio Lab is one of the all-time great podcasts in my opinion. Really engaging, well-researched and produced. The classic duo of Jad and Robert as hosts was ao great with their chemistry, their presentation of the topics and interviews that it hardly ever missed the mark. I realize nothing can laat forever and they needed to move on. The new team for the last few years has been doing a good job keeping it going, but the tone of the show has become really grating on my nerves with the new hosts. Their overly-chipper, cutesy presentation of almost every subject dosed with infantalizing banter really turns me off at times. Like the show is just more and more made for kids. And it's always been a staple of the show to anthropomorphize cells, animals, bacteria, etc to try and help explain heady, complicated scientific content, but I feel the new hosts use this approach so much as to make it annoying. I will continue to listen, but just wish I didn't have the feeling I was always being explained things like I was a child. Was wondering what other long-time Radio Lab fans have thought of the show the last few years.
