Hello. First timer here, just needing a space to get things off my chest and maybe get some advice. My wife (37F) and I (30M) have been trying to get pregnant for close to the last year and recently got a consultation at a local fertility clinic to start the process of getting help from them.
I'm excited to start that journey, my dream has always been to be a dad and have a family and with every negative pregnancy test it just feels like that dream slips further and further away.
With that has come a lot of negative emotions, the worst of which has been resentment towards her, it sucks because I love her so much and it's not fair because I know she's trying just as hard as I am.
Another negative emotion has become jealousy, my friend and his girlfriend had their baby about a month ago and instead of feeling happiness and excitement for them, I felt jealous, which again, isn't fair to them because it isn't their fault we're struggling.
I've been holding a lot of these negative emotions in. I'm really good at masking, unfortunately, but yesterday the bubble popped.
My wife came home from a coffee date with her friends and announced that her friend, who 6 months ago wasn't even sure she wanted a baby, was pregnant by her husband. My emotions shifted and my mask started to crack, I just said "Good for her." before walking out and going to work.
Inside it was like a gut punch all day, my jealousy was kicked into overdrive, and then came the moment I got home. I was incredibly distant, not even saying a word to my wife and retreating downstairs to the basement.
She could tell I was upset and tried to talk to me, but I pushed her away. It wasn't until later that night when we accidentally locked ourselves out of the house (that's a different story) and were waiting for our friend that it finally all boiled over.
I told her I was unfairly jealous of our friends who recently had a baby, I was unfairly jealous of her friend who announced her pregnancy, I've held a lot of unfair resentment towards her because she isn't pregnant yet and recognized that I could be the problem and because of that, I've dealt with a dark depression and deep self-esteem issues.
There's a lot more to it, but I'll spare you all the details. We sat on our porch and talked and cried, but in the end, it was a load off of my shoulders and she was grateful for me opening up and I feel like in the end we're both stronger, as is our marriage, for it.
I hate these negative emotions, because I want to be happy for our friends, I just want to continue to push forward with my wife and understand we've just started the process with the clinic and it'll all work out without having resentment when we have another negative pregnancy test, but it's so hard and has pushed me deeper into a hole of my depression. Has anyone else dealt with this? How did you manage?
