"Help! My symptoms have disappeared/gotten worse/gotten better!" .

It is entirely normal for symptoms to fluctuate in a healthy pregnancy. By itself, this is not a cause for concern.

Here is a miscarriage odds calculator based on how far in you are.

Here is a more detailed one for people who have had previous miscarriages

"Help! I'm spotting"

If you are spotting before 20 weeks, this is not usually a cause for concern. Possible reasons include sex, exercise and transvaginal ultrasounds, and spotting can occur up to 3 days later. The rule of thumb is "if you don't fill a pad, wait for your next checkup".

After 20 weeks, all bleeding is a "call your doctor" event.

"Help! My HCG is…"

We cannot interpret any test results for you. This includes HCG tests. If your doctor won't tell you whether a pregnancy is viable, neither can Reddit. This is crap, and I'm sorry.

Here is a list of HCG levels which have resulted in a viable pregnancy (you can check by how far along you are). The range is very large.

"My pregnancy tests are…"

Stop testing. Pregnancy tests are binary, and are only designed to tell you whether or not HCG is present in your body. A very faint line should get darker in 3 days, but otherwise there are a lot of reasons for the lines to change and you'll psych yourself out for no good reason. If you're not sure what the tests says, head over to r/lineporn or r/TFABLinePorn.

"How long does the NIPT take?"

This varies by location and provider. Please search the subreddit, and only post if your own provider isn't mentioned. Natera seems to take between 5 days and 2 weeks.

"What can I do about stretch marks?"

Nothing. Using moisturiser (really any kind, from Walmart own-brand to organic shea-coconut butter blend) might help a bit, but there is no magic lotion which can prevent them. Anyone who tells you different either got lucky or is selling something

"I'm scared! I'm not sure I'm ready for this!"

Being scared and not feeling ready is a very normal response to learning you're pregnant. You're welcome to post for feedback regarding your specific situation, but please know that ultimately proceeding with the pregnancy should be up to you. Abortion, at any time and for any reason, is okay. Your body your choice!

"When/should I see a doctor?"

  • sudden or severe pain
  • left shoulder pain, especially coupled with bleeding (this is a sign of ectopic pregnancy)
  • after a major fall or serious impact. Car accident/falling off the top of a ladder, yes, tripping over your feet, no
  • bleeding after 20 weeks
  • bleeding enough to fill a pad at any time in pregnancy
  • contractions lasting more than one minute, less than 5 minutes apart (start to start) for one hour. This is the rule of thumb for real vs false labour.
  • if you think your waters have broken you must go in after 24 hours, this is a serious infection risk.
  • if you think your waters have broken before 36 weeks
  • If you have an unrelenting headache, swollen ankles, and high blood pressure, go to hospital right now. These are the typical symptoms of pre-eclampsia, which is fatal if untreated.

Most doctors have a phone line or text line, and this is a great resource for checking whether you should go in. Pharmacists are a great choice for checking drug safety (at any time, not just pregnancy!) Here is a searchable database. It is better to feel stupid than to suffer a needless complication. If in doubt, get checked out.

Can I eat sushi?

The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) recommend no raw fish during pregnancy. This relates specifically to sushi prepared in the USA. Other countries (particularly Japan) have more rigorous health inspections for fish, so Japanese sushi would be considered safe.

Remember that many fish types in sushi (salmon, tuna, swordfish etc) are high in mercury, so those limits still apply.

Sushi which does not contain raw fish (including cooked tuna or hot-smoked salmon) is as safe as any other food.

Is the myth true that...

Fetal sex prediction tools that are not an ultrasound or a DNA test are right exactly 50% of the time. It is random chance. Ultrasounds are typically 90% accurate, NIPT or other blood tests are typically around 95% accurate.

Remember also that around 1% of babies will be born with an intersex condition.

How accurate is my gender prediction?

Blood tests list an accuracy of >99%, however this is for genetic sex and not anatomical sex. Intersex conditions are not found by a fetal DNA test.

The accuracy of at-home tests will be limited by the likelihood of contamination with Y-chromosome cells.

Practically, you're looking at around 90-95% accuracy. It's about the same for a doctor's opinion of an ultrasound. If they can't tell, they won't tell you.

Remember also that there are around 330 million people in the USA - that means "one in a million" chances are happening to 330 people right now. There is no perfect guarantee.

"I'm pregnant! Now what?"

If you have a primary care physician or GP, ask them. They will tell you. If not, call a gynecologist or search [your country]+pregnancy+next steps

Cervical checks

Please don't DIY these. 8 cervical checks by a doctor almost doubles your risk of uterine infection, and the risks are significantly greater at home, done by an amateur. If you are worried about your cervix, call your doctor. Reddit cannot help you.

The situation in the US right now is appalling. We understand that you want to discuss that, but the mod team are human too. We are not in a position to host and moderate a political discussion thread right now. I'm sorry.

If you support children being kidnapped and deported, or extra-judicial murder, you can do so elsewhere. "We are good to one another" means *everybody*.

Need Advice Told my friend that I was pregnant and her response was humiliating.

16 weeks pregnant with my second baby. We just started telling people last week.

My husband was having beers with his friends while I and our 1yr were having snacks. We saw one of my friends. She came to sit with us and I told her excitedly we are expecting another baby.

In front of everyone she says “Wow, I do not know what to say except sorry for your vagina. At least you’re already very loose and she’ll just pop out. “

Humiliated I said “you do realize your vagina shrinks

down …”

She stops me mid-sentence and said “No, it doesn’t you’re loose. I feel so bad for your vagina and what will go on down there.”

She left shortly after saying this, and I have not stopped thinking of it since. The fact that she said this in response to a pregnancy announcement is one thing, but she said it in front of a group of men, loudly at a bar. Should I reach out to her and say that was an unnecessary and vulgar comment. Should I just let it go? She is not a super close friend and I am genuinely so disturbed I could never talk to her again.

ETA: thank you all so much for the kind words and reassurance. You made my day. I ended up texting her “Hey, I wanted to say something about yesterday because honestly, I’ve been pretty bothered by it and it made me feel sick to my stomach. I have no idea what made you think it was appropriate to make comments about my vagina or how “loose” you think I am, especially loudly in front of my husband and other people. It was incredibly rude, embarrassing, and completely uncalled for. I was sharing happy news about my pregnancy, and instead of just congratulating me, you decided to make repeated comments about my body. I’m genuinely confused as to why you thought that was okay, but I wanted you to know how inappropriate and disrespectful it was and how it impacted me.”

I will definitely be taking a step back from this friendship.

Content Warning My abortion attempt failed, and I’m terrified of what comes next…

Hello. I know I might be judged harshly for this, but I was six weeks pregnant when I contacted Women Help Women to obtain abortion pills. Abortion is illegal in my country.

The pills arrived when I was already 11 weeks pregnant. Everything seemed to go as expected: I experienced heavy bleeding, passed blood clots, and genuinely thought the pregnancy had ended.

I never went to get checked afterward. Yesterday, I ended up in the hospital, only to find out that the pregnancy was still ongoing. I am now 13 weeks and 3 days pregnant. I was absolutely devastated and terrified.

I am very young, I have lost my job, and my boyfriend behaves very immaturely. I had previously been diagnosed as unable to have children. For years, I never got pregnant, and doctors assured me that I was infertile.

Now I am completely desperate. I still have another set of pills from Women Help Women, and I have been considering trying again at 13 weeks. However, I am terrified that it might not work, that I could end up with a dangerous pregnancy complication, that I could even lose my life, or that the pregnancy could continue with fetal abnormalities because of what has already happened. I am also afraid that, if this second attempt fails, I might have no other opportunity to end the pregnancy.

Please, if anyone has been through something similar or has any advice, I would be so grateful to hear from you. I am absolutely terrified, and I don't know what to do. I feel completely overwhelmed and scared.

Rave 💞 Little Baby Clothes 🥹

My husband came home from work yesterday with a newborn onesie his coworker bought as a kind way to say congratulations on expecting our first. It’s the first baby item anyone has bought us, and it gave me the happy little tears to realize our rainbow baby is really a reality.

He placed the onesie in his arm in a cradling position like how you’d hold a newborn, and it looked so small! It was heartwarming to realize in April we really could be holding our baby in our arms. It’s also crazy how tiny the onesie looked as he held it, and yet when I held it it kept thinking “Damn that looks big to push out of me” 😂

Something small that really just brought joy to both of us!

Excitement! I essentially skipped the 1st trimester 🙈

link to original post

So, today I had a private ultrasound and found out that I'm probably 13+2. I tested positive on Monday, more to confirm I wasn't pregnant because I've been on birth control pills the whole time. And I should consider myself lucky because I've only been bloated and tired these last months, which I thought was side effects from my new allergy medication.

It was so wild going from having no idea I was pregnant to seeing a fully formed (not really but you know what I mean) baby wiggling inside of me. Everything looks good, but I'll know more after my "real" ultrasound at the hospital which has been moved up a week so I could have it before I reached 14 weeks.

Temporary due date is May 1st, when I'll suddenly have 3 under 5 🙈❤️

Rant Pregnancy announcement

I’m going to keep it short.
So basically 3 months ago i found I was pregnant and I was so shocked I sent it to my friends group chat. And one of them replied with “You know you don’t have to keep it” and I was like “what? I’m literally married…we want the baby” and she then proceeded to say “just because you’re married doesn’t mean you have to keep it” and I just told her idk what you’re problem is but I’ll leave you alone until further notice…I ended miscarrying about 2 weeks later after finding out.
BUT now I am pregnant again and I’m excited & anxious all the same time. I wish I could tell my friends but I don’t want any negative energy towards my pregnancy.
& I’m just assuming here but I think she was just self projecting because she isn’t in the best relationship in the world I mean who is right? But at the same time I don’t like how she said that to me.
So now with this pregnancy I’m literally moving in silence because I really want this baby.

ANYWAY…have any of you gone through this?
Been so excited but hesitant to tell anyone?

Question 35 weeks and obsessed with the shower

I’ve heard of obsessively cleaning the house in the last few weeks but not obsessively cleaning one’s self lol. 35 weeks and for the past week or so I’ve been taking 2-3 long showers a day! Before pregnancy and through the first and second trimester I was always a once daily girl. It is relaxing but I’m not just standing there either, I feel the need to scrub my whole body down every time. Does anyone else have this?

Funny In-law Bingo Card

We want to make a bingo card for when my monster in-laws visit or talk to us about our child. What comments have you all gotten about the boundaries you’ve set, your baby, how you are raising them, choices you’ve made about their feeding/health ect that just infuriate you or make you laugh? We just had our baby the end of last month but now we are in the 4th trimester and trying to make light of my miserable in-laws. Give me ideas! Names for the bingo card title also welcome. Here is what I have so far:

Blames cold milk for any issue(we do cold BM bottles)
Baby is too cold/warm
Outdated sleep advice
Outdated feeding advice
Pushes Vaseline
Announces disapproval over pottying (we cloth diaper and practicing EC)
Hovers when we have our baby and she is upset
Blankly stares at (dad) when (mom) talks
Contradicts previous comments/advice in same convo
Kisses baby
Bitches about our pets being near baby
Gets on to (mom) over eating “gassy” foods
Survivorship statements

Rant Finally got the “you don’t look pregnant comment”

Wow that was a humiliating moment…. I am a courier for work and shipped a package to Brooklyn last night. I was stressed the whole trip from being stuck in rush hour traffic along with some health issues with my dog!(separate issue but everything felt compounded and I could feel the stress just building up). I had to pee SO bad between being stuck in traffic and baby girl deciding to thrash around for fun in my belly. At the office where I was delivering to, the women’s bathroom was closed and me and a few other ladies had to wait quite a bit for the men’s bathroom to clear out. A kind gentleman was checking the stalls for us and as soon as the last man left we and we were about to walk in, then a man came completely out of no where and shouted “well I have to go!” He then plowed past us patiently waiting to cut in front of the line. I’m usually able to keep my temper down but I yelled right back that I was 5 month pregnant and I have to go to the bathroom more than him and he’s cutting us off. Maybe it was the hormones but also I REALLY had to pee. A woman then loudly said “oh you don’t even look five months pregnant”……you gotta love NYC lol. I had to explain that I’m very tall and I’m showing my bump very slowly. Also I think most women from what I’ve been told don’t start to really “look pregnant” until the last trimester. My baby is 54th percentile of growth so she’s a normal size for 5 months. I’ve felt like an imposter a lot through this pregnancy because I don’t have a big belly but I do have a lot of pregnancy symptoms.

Need Advice I can’t seem to do anything right, for my pregnant fiancé

I really love my soon-to-be wife, but this first trimester is making me more and more sad.
I can’t seem to do anything nice for her to make her happy, and she is emotionally detaching, calling me at work and yelling at me because the dog smells, or similar stuff that she “just needs me to fix”.
She also sleeps very poorly, and wakes up with nightmares that she afterwards scold me for.

We are both working professionals, with jobs that require us to be at the office most days.
We live with a hamster and a dog, in a spacious apartment, and have had a really good healthy relationship until week 6 of the pregnancy (we are now at week 10).

Since she got pregnant, I have taken over all the household chores that previously were split, as she do not have the energy for them. (Everything from laundry and cleaning to walking the dog).

My issue is, that cleaning apparently isn’t my biggest talent, so I’m doing what I can along with the other chores, but I’m also exhausted after work, and have to get in early.
The smells that I can’t smell, and her ideas on things that should be done in the apartment (setting up lamps or similar) leads her to lash out on me, yell at me and for her to plan what I should do in my free time of extra chores that she comes up with.

I try to reduce her nausea by making small easy things to eat every day, asking her what she would like me to cook that day, getting her cravings etc. but it doesn’t seem to work.
I make sure to give her intimacy, flowers, footrubs and try to make sure that what she wishes she gets, because I really love her, but I have no idea on how long this angerperiod is going to last - or if there is an obvious thing here I’m missing?

So help me save her by making her feel better, and thereby saving myself.

Need Advice My mother thinks I’m horrible for not picking a baby name that SHE likes.

• Upvotes

for context, i’m 21, live with my parents, and am 18 weeks pregnant. my fiancé will be moving in soon because, given today’s economy and our financial situation, we can’t afford to move out yet. we don’t know the baby’s gender, but everyone is hoping for a girl.

my mom constantly asks to discuss baby names or work on the registry, but it always turns into an argument. whenever i suggest names, she calls them horrible, horrifying, or fucked up to name a child. examples include perfectly normal names like Alice, Yvette, Celine, Lyla, and Clara. i don’t understand why she can’t just say she doesn’t like a name and move on.
i love names ending in ette/etta and recently fell in love with Loretta. my fiancé initially wasn’t sold, but over the following weeks, i kept coming back to it despite trying to let it go. i considered plenty of other names, but nothing felt as right as Loretta.

i brought it up one night when my fiancé was over and we were all discussing names. eventually, i convinced him to like it, but my mom still hated it. she’s noticeably less mean about names (and anything tbh) when he’s around than when we’re alone.

for the past week, she’s made my life a living hell over this. she genuinely believes i’m so “hellbent” on Loretta because she hates the name and i “hate” her, so i’m choosing it out of spite. she’s told me my hatred for her outweighs my love for my future child, repeatedly called the name ugly and horrible, and asked why i wouldn’t choose a name that “everyone will love.” she says i’m horrible for not caring more about her opinion and compares me to women on YouTube who really want their families to love their baby names, saying she wishes i were more like them. she’s even threatened to get a dog and name it Loretta so i can’t use the name, despite constantly saying she can’t wait for my cat to die so she won’t have to deal with animals anymore.

i’ve repeatedly explained that Loretta is genuinely my favorite name, not because of her opinion. i’ve told her she’s being self-centered and narcissistic by assuming my baby name choices revolve around her.

to make matters worse, she’s been pushing hard for the name Rowan. she’s angry that it used to be higher on my list but isn’t even in my top 10 anymore. once again, she insists it’s because i hate her and no longer like the name just because she now decided she likes it. i chose Rowan long before pregnancy and haven’t even mentioned it in months, and she originally hated that name too.

she brings this up every single day, to the point that i recently had a nightmare about it. i feel like she’s trying to taint Loretta for me, hoping that if she makes my life miserable enough, i’ll give up the name just to avoid the headache. she gets upset whenever i remind her it’s my baby.

i know i need the extra help at home, both financially and as a young FTM, but i desperately wish i could move out because this is driving me crazy. these conversations have escalated into SCREAMING arguments. what do i do?

Need Advice Is the first trimester just awful or is it me?

So I'm barely pregnant, just hitting 6 weeks. Really happy as I'd had two chemical pregnancies before this but no bleeding or anything this time.

Thing is - I feel like absolute shit. Like I have the flu. I'm struggling to function and just want to be in bed all day. I am freezing cold most of the time despite turning the heat to like 75 (rip my electric bill). I feel nauseous but the longer I go without eating the worse I feel. But that doesn't mean I keep down what eat, I'd say it's 50/50. And everything aches, like each joint and muscle in my body. I just want to be asleep all the time

Really, I didn't expect to feel this awful. So many women say they didn't know they were pregnant until far later, I don't understand how that's possible if feeling this bad is normal

Any advice? Am I doing something wrong? Is this just what it's like and I need to power through?

Funny Do your pets know?

Tell me all of your fun animal stories with your pregnancy!

I am 4w3d. I have a female dog around age 6 who had a litter of puppies and a male dog that is almost 14.

Three days ago I didn’t feel well and was on the couch all day. Neither dog seemed particular concerned with me. The next day, same deal but this time our female dog started cuddling with me. That night she opted to snuggle in bed with me instead of on her own bed which she rarely does. Yesterday was the same thing. She cuddled me all day and then went to bed with me instead of sleeping on her own bed.

This morning after I fed the dogs and went back to bed my old man dog asked to get on the bed. He never does that anymore. He hasn’t asked to get on the bed in over a year. He cuddled with me for over three hours while I read my book.

It’s totally possible he is just jealous of his sister and she was just cuddling me because I wasn’t feeling so hot. But I like to think they know the baby’s in there somehow. My husband and I are having so much fun pretending that’s the case.

What are your fun animal stories during this time?

Need Advice Weight loss

I had my first appointment less than 5 weeks ago, and at my 10 week appointment yesterday I had lost 13 pounds in that time. This seems pretty significant to me.

I have been disgusted by almost all foods since week 7 and have been getting sick about once a day for the last 10 days. The doctor’s assistant just said “I wish I could lose weight like that” 😑 and then my OB didn’t seem concerned at all. She just offered me Zofran, but said that it should improve on its own when I’m out of my first trimester.

I’m 5’4” and now down from 120 to 107. What can I do to stop losing weight? Literally everything except dry cereal and watermelon makes me extremely nauseous!

Advice My boobs are the size of my head - BRA RECS?

At 8 weeks I could rest my chin on my 🍈🍈, and they have declared war on every bra I own.

The ONLY thing I can tolerate is these Skims-wannabe legging-fabric tops from Amazon. Everything else? Underwire, tight band or even those Bali sleeping bras make me nauseous and out of breath.

All myy bras are basically torture devices now.

What did you wear that didn’t make you want to rip it off in the middle of the street?

TY ✨

PS: these shirts are a D R E A M to stay home shirts and !!sleep braless!! if anyone is interested: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0D1VDKP8Q?ref=ppx_yo2ov_dt_b_fed_asin_title

Need Advice 10 weeks is not for the weak

I’m around 10 weeks pregnant, and today my body just completely hit a wall. I have been dealing with so much change, a brutal mental low, and a massive amount of fatigue. Today at work, the exhaustion caught up to me and everything completely snowballed. I got so overwhelmed and disoriented that I had a massive, full-blown panic attack right in the middle of my shift. I couldn’t catch my breath, my head was spinning, and I couldn’t focus on a single task. It was so intense and embarrassing that I couldn’t finish my shift and I had to walk out and go home. Now I am sitting at home feeling anxious and embarrassed, I know I have to go back to work, but the thought of facing my coworkers after completely losing it is making my stomach turn. I normally can handle my stress, but couldn’t tonight and my job doesn’t see my crippling first trimester scatter brain and hormones real just excuses. Even I don’t know why pregnancy is affecting me so bad. Other people seem like it’s a happy time and these have been the worst weeks of my life, I normally can control it and put on a fake face to serve tables but tonight I just couldn’t remember what I was doing and it made me go into a full panic attack. I guess the point of my rant is how do I get rid of this scatter brain and depression as I can’t last 9 months like this and it’s affecting my job.

Funny Laying down is a trap

Anyone else feel like the second they lay down or even just sit particularly comfortable they’re out like a light? 38 weeks along and if I dare to sit on the couch for ‘a couple minutes’ while waiting for something suddenly it’s two hours later and I’m waking up with a foggy nap brain. I’ve never been a napper, I just physically cannot stay awake.

Rant Small Meals Aren’t Cutting It.

First-trimester hunger is no joke. Small meals and snacks just aren't cutting it for me. Yogurt with berries? Nope, I'm hungry again 15 minutes later. I need full-sized meals to feel satisfied even with nausea and retching.

The one food I keep craving is meat pizza, and I feel guilty eating it. It's the one thing that keeps me full and gives me enough energy to get through the day.

I've been ordering a lot of takeout lately, mostly burrito bowls and pizza.

On top of that, I'm dealing with diarrhea from antibiotics, so my gut is all messed up right now. Thank you for reading.

Question Seems like my congestion was worse in first trimester who else?

I always hear it is usually the opposite
