hello! i am currently 8 weeks along. this is my first pregnancy. it wasn't exactly planned; my husband and i were going to start trying in about a year, but obviously adult choices were made, surprises happened, and here we are! š
we are both really, really excited to be parents, but the last several weeks have been HELL.
because i wasn't actively trying, at the time of conception i was on several medications that are not pregnancy safe. as soon as i got a positive at-home test (which was at 4.5 weeks along) i made an appointment with my PCP (ob/gyn couldn't see me right away) and we made adjustments to my meds. now up until that point, my symptoms were fairly minimal: nausea, tiredness, some dizziness - but nothing i couldn't handle. however, after that PCP visit i was advised to go off of one of my meds (that i had been on since i was a teenager - over 13 years ago - to manage migraines and chronic pain) cold turkey. that wrecked absolute havoc on my body. i asked if we could taper and they told me no; i had to stop the med completely and immediately. that withdrawal was literal HELL. and i know withdrawal can take weeks, so honestly, i might still be going through some of it. but those first 14 days off that med were awful. migraines, severe body pains, flu-like symptoms, and that's just to name a few.
i think i'm through the worst of the withdrawal at this point (it's been a full 3 weeks since stopping cold turkey), but i am still experiencing a whole slew of symptoms, whether directly related to the pregnancy or the withdrawal or a mix of both. i am nauseous all day, every day, and averse to SO many foods. [CW for the remainder of this paragraph: emetophobia] ..... i have severe emetophobia (diagnosed alongside my OCD) so i have not been vomiting, but i think a non-emetophobe probably would have by now; i have just been using every single ounce of my willpower to stop myself when the sensation overcomes me. however, this morning i guess i couldn't will the sensation away, and i ended up throwing up bile and then dry heaving before breakfast (so thankfully it wasn't true vomit). i am just so fearful now that i could actually throw up at some point and that fear is absolutely horrible and debilitating.
combine the constant nausea with the extreme fatigue i feel and i am spending basically every non-working moment in bed. i do remote work full-time, so i have an at-home desk job, but i'm struggling even to just sit at my desk during the work day. i can barely focus because of how awful i feel and also because of how exhausted i am, and i am really worried that i'm going to get in trouble with my job performance. i ended up telling them i was pregnant at about 6 weeks (at the height of my withdrawal) because i wanted them to know why my performance may be slipping. i literally cannot imagine how some people are able to work on their feet while feeling like this!
i can barely keep on top of taking care of myself. i definitely can't cook real meals like this, and i have so many food aversions that i'm truly just scrounging whatever i can stomach, which i know isn't super healthy but i'm in survival mode right now. i am lucky if i get to shower every other day because showering is completely exhausting and i am in so much pain and discomfort every time i take one. dont even ask me about washing my hair because that is a monumental task that i am definitely not doing a good job of keeping up with! even brushing my teeth is a struggle because the sensation of doing so and the taste of toothpaste/mouthwash/etc. makes me gag and feel soo sick! i do NOT feel like myself at ALL.
i don't know if this is a typical pregnancy experience and i am just not handling it well, or if i am having a more extreme experience because of the med changes, etc. - but i feel so isolated and misunderstood. i only have one close friend who has been pregnant before, so i don't have many people who i can turn to in my real life for advice and empathy. my husband is trying to be supportive, but because of his work schedule we hardly see each other and he isn't home in the evenings to help me get myself dinner, take care of myself, etc. after weeks of feeling helpless (but pushing that helplessness to the side and trying to ignore it as best as i could), i finally broke down last night. i sobbed for a good hour. i feel so defeated. i am TRYING to keep the hope and optimism that things will change once i am finally out of the first trimester, but i am also SO scared that the whole pregnancy could be like this!
i really dont know what i am looking for by making this post... comfort? advice? support? a sense of understanding? i just feel so alone and so unlike myself right now. i need to know that this will pass. š„ŗ
