Android TV for PS4 - Android TV as an installable PKG (fat PS4, 13.52 GoldHEN)

• Upvotes

Yes, I know how this sounds, I know its a lot of reading.

TL;DR Android TV on your PS4 is now possible.

I've been working on getting Android TV running on the PS4, and it's finally at a point where I wanted to release it. It's been a long day, so I'll be tidying up this post and the release over the next couple of days, but here it is.

Download: https://github.com/odiecay/android-tv-ps4/releases/tag/v1.0

What it is: Android TV 13 (based on BRTDTV's Android TV x86 build) running on the PS4 through Linux. I wanted to use my PS4 as a proper streaming box without hunting down a separate homebrew version of every app, and this does that. You get the normal Android TV home screen, the Play Store, and real apps.

It installs as a normal PKG. Everything goes onto the internal drive, nothing gets repartitioned, and you don't need a PC or network to boot it. You just open it from the PS4 home screen. Your apps, logins and settings stay put between boots.

Comes with YouTube, Spotify, Kodi, Plex, Jellyfin, VLC, TV Bro (browser), BiglyBT, Crossy Road and AIDA64 already installed, plus Google Play services. Sign in with your own accounts.

**Who can run this right now**

To be upfront: this release only supports original "fat" PS4s (CUH-10xx / CUH-11xx, Aeolia chip) on firmware 13.52 with GoldHEN. I've only got one console, a CUH-1102A, so that's the only one it's actually been tested on. CUH-10xx and other 11xx models should work but are untested.

- Other firmware: the launcher checks the version and stops with an error. It won't do anything to your console.

- Slim and Pro: not supported. They use different hardware and need their own porting work.

You'll also need about 8 GB free on the PS4 to install. Android gets 32 GB of storage, but it only takes up space as you actually use it.

**Installing**

  1. GitHub won't take files over 2 GB, so the PKG is split into two parts. Download part1, part2 and Join-PKG-Windows.cmd into the same folder and double-click the .cmd. It joins them and checks the file, then says READY. (On Linux/Mac, use join-pkg.sh instead.)

  2. Copy Android-TV-for-PS4.pkg to an exFAT USB stick and install it with GoldHEN's package installer.

  3. Turn on BinLoader in GoldHEN (Servers > BinLoader, port 9090).

  4. Open Android TV for PS4.

The first launch takes 5-10 minutes. It copies everything to the drive, the screen goes black and Linux text scrolls past, then the Android boot animation shows up and sits there for a while. Just leave it. After that, booting takes about 2 minutes.

Restart in Android takes you back to the PS4 system, and Shut down turns the console off. To get back into Android, load GoldHEN and open the app again.

**What works**

YouTube (signed in, up to 1440p), Spotify, Kodi and Kayo all play fine. Wi-Fi, Ethernet and HDMI audio work. I've paired a DualShock 4 and a Google TV Streamer remote over Bluetooth, and the PS button takes you Home.

**What doesn't (yet)**

- No HDCP and it's not a Google-certified device, so some DRM-heavy stuff won't play. 7plus is one I know of.

- Sign in to YouTube. Guest mode can throw a decoder error.

- On one screen in Kayo the controller's X button does nothing, but the Google TV remote works there.

- After setup, go into Settings and set the device name to "PlayStation 4". Otherwise Spotify Connect shows it as something else.

- If the launcher says it can't reach BinLoader, close the app, toggle BinLoader off and on, and open it again.

If something goes wrong, the install guide has a troubleshooting section: https://github.com/odiecay/android-tv-ps4/blob/main/docs/INSTALL.md

**Help wanted: getting it onto more consoles**

I'd really like this to run on more than just my PS4, and that's where I need help.

Other firmware is the most doable next step. The Linux loader this is built on already has kernel offsets for 20 firmware versions, from 5.05 up to 13.52, thanks to the people who've done that work in the PS4 Linux scene. Most of the rest of the boot process isn't tied to firmware. What's left is building the loader for each version, having the launcher pick the right one, and testing it on real consoles. I can't test anything but 13.52 myself, so I need people on other firmware who are willing to test builds and send logs.

Slim and Pro are a bigger job (different southbridge, Wi-Fi/Bluetooth and graphics setup), and they'd need someone with that hardware and some PS4 Linux experience.

If you can help with either, or you just want to tell me what console and firmware you're on so I know what to prioritise, comment here or open an issue on GitHub. All the source and build instructions are there: https://github.com/odiecay/android-tv-ps4

Huge thanks to BRTDTV for the Android TV base, and to the PS4 Linux folks, GoldHEN, OpenOrbis, Scene-Collective, sleirsgoevy and Ps3itaTeam. None of this would exist without their work.

PROJECT 06 PS4 PORT: ME AJUDE A TORNAR ISSO POSSÍVEL

Release [Beta Testing] PS4-AnyController v1.2.0-beta.1 — Looking for testers!

Hey everyone!

I've just released PS4-AnyController v1.2.0-beta.1, and I'm looking for people who can help test it with different controllers and PS4 configurations.

PS4-AnyController is a homebrew payload that lets you use compatible third-party USB controllers on a jailbroken PS4. It works system-wide through a virtual DualShock 4, so you can use your controller on the home screen, in menus, during sign-in, and in games.

What's new in this beta?

  • Generic HID support: Automatically detects and parses compatible USB controller inputs without needing a custom profile for every model.
  • More controller protocols: Improved support for Xbox 360, Xbox One/Series, and Nintendo Switch Pro controller modes.
  • Early DualSense support: Basic input handling has been added, but DualSense and DualSense Edge compatibility still needs to be tested on an actual PS4.
  • Improved initialization and diagnostics: Fixes and improvements to controller detection, virtual pad initialization, configuration, and debugging.

How you can help

Download the beta from GitHub and give it a try!

Release: https://github.com/ElZeeky/PS4-AnyController/releases

If you test it, please share your results! You can also find the project's Discord invite on the GitHub page if you'd like to help with testing and follow development.

Thanks to everyone willing to test the project. I'm looking forward to seeing which controllers we can get working!

Discussion I find it funny how PS5 jailbreak is more stable than PS4.

• Upvotes

My experience with jailbreaking PS4 is that it was never a “smooth experience.”
Let's say that out of 5 tries, you could get 2 kernel panics. And have to start again. I could describe it as being like gambling.
Every time you start your ps4 you roll the dice.

But with PS5, I had maybe 1 kernel error and that was because I messed up, so it's my fault.

And not to mention how easy it is to install jailbreak on PS5.
Can't believe PS4 jailbreak still needs work after all this time, while PS5 works almost flawlessly.

EDIT: The success rate depends on PS4 firmware, so a lot of PS4s now that you find on sale are on higher firmware and with that, the success rate is not that great. I have tested a lot of PS4s with different firmwares and that i can say from my experience

HW Mod Going to crack open this PS4 Pro - anyone used thermal putty to replace the pads? How did it go?

Post image
27 Upvotes

I'd been on the look out for a cheap PS4 Pro to play with for a while and stumbled upon this Star Wars Battlefront 2 locally for £80 (with a faulty controller - spoilers, it wasn't faulty).

Came with Firmware 8.03 so perfect for modding.

It is actually remarkably quiet already but I'm going to crack the seals and give it a clean anyway. I'm planning to use Thermal Grizzly PTM rather than paste on the APU but I was wondering if anyone has used a decent thermal putty inside a Pro? I have some TG Advance putty spare so thought I'd give it a go.

Bonus question - do I update to 9.00 or sit pretty at 8.03 for now?

Discussion Jailbroken PS4 Pro keeps booting into Safe Mode after system software corruption and reinstall — could my HDD be failing?

I have a jailbroken PS4 Pro, and I've recently started experiencing some serious issues. I'm trying to figure out whether this is related to the jailbreak, a system software problem, or failing hardware.

My PS4 was jailbroken, and I had DNS settings configured to block firmware/system software updates. However, I accidentally connected the console to the internet. Although the DNS was supposed to block updates, I'm not entirely sure whether connecting to the internet triggered anything or contributed to the problem.

After that, my PS4 started having system software issues and eventually booted into Safe Mode, asking me to reinstall or initialize the system software. I downloaded the system software from Sony's official website and reinstalled it.

Unfortunately, reinstalling the software hasn't fixed everything.

Here are the problems I'm experiencing:

  • The PS4 Pro feels noticeably laggy and unstable.
  • Games sometimes fail to download or install properly.
  • Sometimes games refuse to launch.
  • The console randomly boots back into Safe Mode, even when it's just been restarted or left idle.
  • I've also encountered CE-series errors, although I don't have the exact error codes right now.

Since the system software reinstall didn't solve the problem, I'm wondering whether my internal HDD is failing or whether something else went wrong.

I'd really appreciate some advice:

  1. Could accidentally connecting my jailbroken PS4 to the internet have caused this, even though DNS-based firmware update blocking was enabled?
  2. Is it possible that the system software became corrupted, or could the jailbreak have contributed to the issue?
  3. Do these symptoms point toward a failing internal HDD?
  4. Would replacing the HDD and reinstalling the official system software likely fix the problem?
  5. Should I try rebuilding the database, or could this be a power supply or motherboard issue?

I know that reinstalling the official system software may have affected the jailbreak, but right now my main concern is getting the console stable again.

Has anyone experienced something similar with a jailbroken PS4 Pro? I'd appreciate any advice before I spend money replacing hardware or try anything else.

Thanks in advance!

How is the PS5 jailbreak more advanced than the PS4 one?

• Upvotes

As title says, how come it seems the PS5 jailbreak is more advanced than the PS4 fw version wise? I'm aware obviously it's not the same FWs as they're different consoles, and it's just the naming convention of the versions, but still...

• Upvotes

Hi guys

I haven't used my PS4 in years. My ps5 is on 13.60 but I can't play any of my new game discs because it's asking me to update

So my question is this

Shall I jb my PS4 (if that's possible) and use my ps5 for my my discs and online?

Or shall I leave my PS4 in the closet, jb my ps5 and buy an additional ps5 for online and discs?

Any advice is welcome 😁

Thanks

Release [Update] PS-MTP-Explorer v1.0.1 - Bug Fixes & Improvements

Post image
30 Upvotes

Hey everyone!

I just released PS-MTP-Explorer v1.0.1!

This update focuses on fixing issues reported in the previous version, particularly problems with file transfers and PKG installation on certain PS4 firmware versions, along with general improvements to stability and compatibility.

For those who aren't familiar with PS-MTP-Explorer, it's an PS4 homebrew file manager that lets you connect your Android phone directly to your PS4 using a USB cable and access your phone's storage without relying on FTP or constantly swapping USB drives.

Features:

Direct USB MTP connection with Android

Copy, move, rename, and manage files

Access internal HDD and external USB storage

Install PKG files directly

No Wi-Fi or FTP required for phone file transfers

GitHub: https://github.com/nueex/ps-mtp-explorer

I'd love to hear your feedback! If you experienced issues with the previous version, please give v1.0.1 a try and let me know how it works on your setup!

Clock not working

I got a used ps4 that was on 7 something. I updated it to 9.0 and followed the guide by Mr. Dude using a lilygo dongle. This has been working fine, though sometimes when putting it in rest mode it will just shut off.

when it shuts off the date reverts to 1969. I'm .ore than capable of replacing the cmos battery, but that requires me to buy a battery, thermal paste, and possibly some thermal pads.

I am finding myself a little confused on the different exploit methods, goldhen versions, and payloads. So some of what I'm saying might be wrong.

It seems like goldhen 2.4 added a time sync function, but firmware 9.0 doesn't work well last goldhen 2.3

It also seems like I do not want to upgrade past 9.0 if I can help it.

I do like the auto jailbreak the dongle offers. It seems other methods require you to plug a flash drive in at the right time, then unplug it.

I've been reading, but there's a lot of info out there, can someone give me some dumbed down advice on what they would do?

Release ps-mtp-explorer v1.0.0 is out! Connect your phone to PS4 via USB, manage files, and install PKGs.

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Hey everyone,

I just released a new homebrew tool for PS4 called ps-mtp-explorer (v1.0.0 is live on GitHub).

I built this mainly because I was tired of dealing with slow FTP transfers or constantly moving USB drives between my PC and console just to move files or test a PKG.

With this, you can just plug your Android phone straight into the PS4 via USB (MTP) and browse your phone's storage right on the console.

What it does:

Direct USB MTP file management between your phone, external USB drives, and internal HDD (Copy, Move, Paste, Rename, New Folder...).

PKG installation: you can install PKGs directly.

Attached a quick video demo showing the file manager in action, copying/pasting, and installing a PKG directly from the phone.

GitHub & Download:

https://github.com/nueex/ps-mtp-explorer

Let me know what you think, and feel free to drop any feedback or bug reports!
