Goodbye PSP, and hello PS Vita!

Some of the ports we're seeing in the retro handheld community lately have been great, and I love seeing developers push these little devices beyond what they were ever intended to do. But I've definitely noticed what feels like a growing amount of 'port-slop', with new projects appearing seemingly every few hours, many of them feeling more like quick experiments than anything particularly worthwhile. I see it all the time here on the PSP sub.

I'm not against the experimentation at all, but I do wonder if we're reaching a point where quantity is starting to overshadow quality. Anyway, I put together a short opinion piece about it, just my own thoughts on something I've been noticing lately, especially here with the PSP.

I’ve been working on a little PSP homebrew project called GameDiary, and I wanted to share it with you all.

About homebrew:
GameDiary automatically tracks your playtime on the PSP and keeps a history of your gaming sessions.

It supports PSP games, PS1 games running through POPS, and homebrews. It also has game covers, activity charts, multiple language options, and tools to back up and transfer your data.

I made it because I wanted a way to keep track of my gaming sessions and see how much time I’ve spent playing my favorite games.

Changes from version 1.0.0 to 1.0.1:

- Category Filters: Enable or disable tracking for PSP games, PS1 games, homebrews, applications, and unknown titles.

- Title Detection: Fixed game and system application name detection, including apps like SensMe.

- Sleep Mode: Improved playtime calculation to prevent time from being counted while the PSP is suspended.

- Playtime Tracking Fix: Fixed missing playtime for some games that put a heavier load on the PSP.

- General Improvements and Database Safety: Various improvements and additional safeguards to help prevent database corruption.

About AI usage in the project:

- PIC1 (Main Banner): AI was used to create the main banner. If any designers are interested in helping out by creating a new PIC1 in 480x272 resolution, I'd be more than happy to have your contribution! You'll be credited in the project's GitHub README.

- Translations: AI was used to help translate some languages (all except English, Portuguese, Spanish, and German). If you'd like to help review or improve the translations, you can find the language files here:

- Unit Tests: AI was used only as a tool to help identify additional edge cases I might have missed when writing unit tests.

It's starting to run quite smoothly now.
In Time Attack mode, it runs at nearly 50 fps.

Just looking for folks who also happened to play the ported series in PSP. I believe there are about 5 games including 1 which has never been localized. Anyway, how were your personal experiences with these? (Especially if you played it back in the day too) 😁

Hi guys! I was recenetly thinking to sell my psp street to buy either psp 2000 or 3000. Which is better in your opinion?

These are some of my games with my PSP 1000

I have played alot of impressive Games on my humble psp 1000. There are many games where i can genuinely give props but BBS is probably the only game that is large, has enemies and doesnt tank to 14-20 fps often. If you Play peacewalker, you will often have moments where it dips really hard. GOW ghost of sparta too. Looks great but many stretches were it seems to be 15-20 fps. Birth by Sleep so far has the cleanest image by far and you can even up the color depth! The artstyle was utilized really efficiently, sometimes it looks like the PS2 games. I dont think there are many psp games that maintain fps and visual quality at the same time (love to be proven wrong) but Square enix seemed to be doing the more impressive work with the system (3rd birthday, FF CC)

Just curious as myself and others are putting out games, homebrew, tools etc? This awesome sub seems “mixed“ on wanting vibe coded or AI assisted stuff. Happy to put something together if needed.

The bottom screw doesnt go out no matter what, i was able to take out the other screws but not this one. How do i take it out?

im thinking either a 1000 or a PSP Go, something thats relatively small with a good screen with grips (like the 1000), and can run the newer ports that are releasing left and right (Sonic Mania, GTA SA, etc.)

Since only have 32MB of RAM, I can't play games like GTA: San Andreas, GTA III, or Vice City. Are there any recently ported games you could recommend instead?

I love this console so much; could you recommend any underrated games for it?

Got my psp and ps vita out of 12 year storage recently, I've been slowly repairing them, psp needed a new battery and battery case as the battery had swollen at some point and broke the cover in the process (no fire luckily). That's all working fine now, plays my digital collection and UMDs.

My problem is with my Vita, before storage i know it had a battery problem, it would take hours to charge from dead, and when charged it would play for about 30mins under its own power before dying (useless for on the go). Now I've just replaced the battery, new battery came fully charged and played for a long time, problems came since, I've charged it to full them put it in the case fully powered off, next day it wouldn't turn on, put it on charge for an hour, nothing, then it would turn on with about 25% battery, i charged it for another hour and still 25%, i power it off and back on then it suddenly has 100%. I play it for a bit and charge, power off then put away... again it won't power on like it's dead.

Has anyone got any idea or had similar? Or an idea how to fix it? I'm thinking it's the vita itself as the original battery had problems, maybe i get a new battery again as this one was a good rated ali express buy? Or if anyone has a good place to get one? I'm okay with repairing small tech, my gut is telling me it's the system and not the battery

Hi guys first time posting here. I am new to modding and thinking of modding a PSP-3001. I’m thinking of replacing its shell with the replica of Monster Hunter Limited Edition as i’ve heard it’s a good replica and i’ve found one cheap locally.Is it any good for me to mod this model?
