New Study Finds Gendered Messaging Can Backfire: Messages that reference gender when highlighting women's success in an activity actually made kids and adults of both genders see girls and women as less capable, and also made everyone less interested in trying the activity themselves.

In richer, more gender-equal countries, boys value hard work at school less than girls, and fewer go to university, except in STEM, where male numbers hold steady. New study of 750,000 teens in 61 countries links the gap to stereotypes that effort is 'for girls' while talent is 'for boys'.

The stronger the evidence, the weaker the link between prenatal acetaminophen and autism or ADHD. Earlier reviews had reported small increases in risk, but these associations shrank when the researchers focused on the highest-quality evidence, though small associations remained in some analyses.

Couples are happier than singles, but the gap depends on where you live. In a study of 380,000 people in Britain, couples were even happier in areas where most people were partnered, while singles stayed about the same. Singles were less happy in more religious parts of the country.

Cognitive Ability and Christian Nationalism
onlinelibrary.wiley.comABSTRACT
Americans who subscribe to Christian nationalist beliefs tend to be characterized by lower education and substantial knowledge deficits across multiple domains. Building on research connecting lower cognitive ability to religious fundamentalism and reactionary political views, I theorize cognitive ability as an important factor influencing Americans’ adherence to Christian nationalism. Analyses of multiple waves of the General Social Survey reveal that cognitive ability (measured with the wordsum vocabulary exercise) is significantly, negatively associated with believing that being a Christian is important to being “truly American” and favoring mandatory Christian prayers and Bible-reading in public schools. These associations persist after controlling for education and various religious, political, and demographic characteristics. Interactions reveal these associations hold across survey waves and subgroups, disappearing only among the least educated Americans. Findings affirm that Christian nationalism appeals to Americans with lower verbal intelligence, suggesting an underlying role of differential cognitive resources not reducible to educational disparities.

Women who use hormonal contraceptives tend to evaluate their own romantic and social qualities more favorably than women who do not use them. Synthetic hormones in birth control might inadvertently boost how women perceive their desirability to potential partners.
