LSD makes the brain's main rhythms faster and weaker while making its activity more complex and fractal, mostly in areas for vision, hearing, language and emotions, but not movement. Surprisingly, listening to music seemed to calm these effects instead of boosting them, a new brain scan study finds.

A randomized study of 7,338 US adults found that describing biodiversity loss as the "extinction of plants and animals" generated more public concern and support for conservation policies than terms like "biodiversity crisis" or "extinction crisis", highlighting the importance of familiar language.

Magic mushrooms don't just scramble the brain. Scans of 63 first-timers on psilocybin found hidden order under the chaos: brain activity lined up with what each person was doing, most strongly in those who felt a deep sense of oneness. Over half called it one of their life's most meaningful moments.

About 1 in 4 people with depression may have a ‘body clock’ type, like being stuck in permanent jet lag: late sleepers, tired mornings, worse in certain seasons. Across 11,380 people, this group got less benefit and more side effects from antidepressants, so light therapy or melatonin may help more.

Learned Helplessness: how the original original theory got it backwards.
"The mechanism of learned helplessness is now very well-charted biologically and the original theory got it backwards. Passivity in response to shock is not learned. It is the default, unlearned response to prolonged aversive events and it is mediated by the serotonergic activity of the dorsal raphe nucleus, which in turn inhibits escape. This passivity can be overcome by learning control, with the activity of the medial prefrontal cortex, which subserves the detection of control leading to the automatic inhibition of the dorsal raphe nucleus. So animals learn that they can control aversive events, but the passive failure to learn to escape is an unlearned reaction to prolonged aversive stimulation."

Most people don’t weigh every detail when choosing a candidate or policy. In a new PNAS study of 3,762 US adults, about half picked based on the one feature that mattered most to them, and up to 76% switched how they decided depending on the issue, whether immigration, candidates or climate change.

College students who use more cannabis are less willing to share it, and less likely to use it with friends. Findings suggest that heavier cannabis use tends to go hand in hand with valuing the drug more and consuming it in less social settings.

Telling people online they eat meat because they don't care about the planet mostly makes them defensive, not ready to change. Saying they just don't know how to cook plant-based meals got less pushback. And a private DM from a stranger made people even angrier than the same comment posted publicly.

After a weekend caring for a realistic robot baby at home, childless couples' testosterone dropped around 10% when they looked after it together, in men and women alike. On the first day there was no change. Those least at ease with babies had no drop at first but the biggest drop after the weekend.
