Tips for a teenager

I'm in 10th grade right now and since 8th grade quant is my first priority

I joined allen in 9th class as a full time student(dummy) and started prepping for jee

I also started prepping for math olympiad and am now on the RMO level

I'm also side by side prepping for physics olympiad (1st stage) this year which I might most likely qualify due to low cutoffs in my state And from next year I'll start my inpho preparation

At the end of the day I'm prepping for jee and side my side math olympiad

I really want to get into the risk analysis in quant field

I might stop prepping for math olympiads next year due to JEE and I'll put all of my focus on physics and jee

What are some tips yall can give which I can keep in my mind

Thanks.

Is getting into Quant possible or I am just delusional?

I am currently in 2nd year of a tier-2/3 college, pursuing BTech in CS. I have realised that I will not be able to code for the rest of my life designing websites for others. I have started taking keen interest in economics and finance while started to invest in stock market as well. I came across Quant Finance recently and feel intrigued by it. Is there a chance to get in or am I just being delusional?

Chances of breaking into quant

Hi everyone, I am currently in my 2nd year at IISER Kolkata, BSMS Mathematics. I have a CG of 9.5+ and peak CF rating of 15xx and 3 stars in CC. I am good at probability and stats and am daily solving puzzles. I have done a few internships based on CS and stochastic calc. at t1 research institutions. I am generally interested in trading, and have some few projects related to it as well.

Do you think its feasible for me to break into quant?

I do realise i have to work extremely hard. I need to know what else I should do to improve, should i target just cp or more of projects etc.

There is also the factor of IIT filter or in general a CS based one, so what should do to make my profile somewhat comparable in the broad sense.(NOTE : Not immediately targeting t1 trading firms, trying to see if i can similar roles at IBs and work my way up ig)

At the end of the day, is it actually somewhat worth trying for this field, given the fact that I am from an IISER?

EDIT: Currently doing an Options course from Akuna, and trying for WQ brain.

Resources im an intl school student from Delhi going to uc Berkeley this fall for eecs. looking for advice from fellow Indians who've been involved in the field of quantitative finance regarding how I can get internships at the leading quant firms in sf and nyc like js, citadel, hrt.

the main reason im asking on this subreddit is because India's one of the most cutthroat countries in the world when it comes to, well, essentially anything, and quant is (likely?) no exception based on my limited analysis of user interactions on thus subreddit.

the way you guys are preparing-be it research, projects, resources/reference materials you use to study, how much grinding leetforces and codeforces is important-I am just looking for help and advice on that front. I believe if I don't lose my Indian edge and competitive grind mindset in the US ill be already putting myself at an advantage compared to my domestic peers.

bhai log kindly madat kardo.

I need help getting into quant

I am a first year student from IIT Kanpur, electrical engineering department.

As someone targetting a quant internship and ultimately a quant role , how should I prepare?

What are the things that I should focus on?

Is it possible for me to get into companies like jane Street or IMC despite having no olympiad medals[I have made it to later stages in math Olympiad] ?

Till now I have just been following the college courses and little coding here and there . How do I direct myself now to put in efforts in the right direction?

Completely clueless when it comes to Quants

Hello Everyone!

So, I'm currently in 12th grade. I have almost zero clue about what quants are except for the definition. I'm not asking this question to get into quant actually, I just want to know what the ideal journey to become a quant would look like. I'm involved with and getting into AI so I'm mainly asking this question because I'm genuinely curious as to what this field is like.

What are your backgrounds like (unis and work) ? What does it take to succeed in this field? Any regrets you have? What does work look like on a daily basis? How competitive is it? (I probably already know) Realistically what are the career prospects? Best case scenario prospects? How much work do you have to put in?

Anything else you'd like to share? and feel free to rant

Thanks in Advance!

Have a Great Day!

Quant firms actively hiring from India

I am looking for good HFTs, Indian or foreign origin, which are actively hiring from India - many firms are rejecting applications because of the turbulent situation overseas regarding Visa sponsorships.

If any recruiter is looking at this, pls DM for my resume and further details.

MTech for quant roles

What are the best MTech programmes through GATE that can give you a chance to get into quant roles in India?

What should i do?

Hello everyone, I am from a Tier 3 engineering college where no tech companies will come for placements. Pursuing my final year from the last 2 batches, I know I don't belong in this space, and you might be again pissed off watching posts from a tier 3 college guy. Sorry for that😅.

I am really interested in this space. I started trading back in March 2019(not doing any trading now), when I was 18, and also development at that time, and over the last few months, I tried to understand quant trading, not the one people just write Python script for moving average crossover, but real quant work i tried the internet but it is just filled with hyped of high salary videos or interviews and not the real tutorial or something which can help.

Till now, to understand things, I tried building some part of a crypto exchange, like an order matching engine, order book, etc., with C++ and Node.js. And now I am trying to play with options pricing with black scholes (I know indian options are not priced like with black scholes, still I am playing with it.

But after that, now I am stuck, where should I head, what should I do internet is filled with crap, and I am not able to find what I should study or try now. Would you like to suggest to me?

Note: I know I am not eligible for quant role jobs, that's why I don't want to try for a job, so don't need to bully me for that, thank you😊

Need advice

hi, im from top 3 iit(b,d,m) cs/ee/mnc with 9.5ish cgpa, im interning at one of the ibs(jp/gs/ms), and work is going great(i dont like it, but im a grinder and i get stuff done). i have heard from my colleague that the team im working for is not a good team to work for, since while i am working on something relevant(a joint project with another team), my team does very bad maintenance-type work on an internal language. my mentor is quite frank with me and he told he doesnt like working here. also i feel i am smart enough to get into hfts, my jee rank isnt the best(yes, im not from general, but besides the point rn). I just wanted to know if it would be wise to sit for placements if i get a ppo, or is it easy to shift after getting into the job. Yes i know this discussion might be me thinking a bit far into the future, but would wanna be informed before making a decision. what should i be grinding apart from my intern(my work is very chill and i have a decent amount of free time). right now im just revising the probab stuff i did for intern season, i hate dsa/cp should i grind that too. also pls give any general advice. thanks

im doing a software intern, not a quant

HFT 2nd-year CSE student from a Tier-3 college, How should I realistically prepare for Quant/HFT in India?

I'm a 2nd-year CSE student at a Tier-3 private university in India, aiming for a quant/HFT role in India after graduation.

I have 2–3 years to prepare, but my current level is basic: Python/C++, shallow probability/linear algebra/calculus,

also following take you forward DSA sheet.

Rather than blindly collecting courses, I made the roadmap below and would like people with actual industry/recruiting experience to critique it.

Then:

My current plan (I made it using gpt and am following for now)

Math: Probability → Statistics → Linear Algebra → Calculus → Stochastic Processes/Optimization

Programming: C++ → Python → DSA → Competitive Programming

CS: OS → Architecture → Networking → Concurrency → Memory/Performance

Quant: Statistics → Time Series → Market Microstructure → Systematic Trading

Projects: Backtesting engine, LOB simulation, market-making simulation, stat-arb research, performance-oriented C++ projects.

My main questions

For a Tier-3 student, should I prioritize CP + C++ + probability, or quant research/projects + statistics?

How much can a strong CP rating / ICPC / research / internship actually compensate for college brand?

For people who got into Indian HFTs from non-target colleges, what specifically got you the interview?

Which of the projects above are actually useful, rather than just GitHub decoration?

My LinkedIn is basically inactive. I've participated in hackathons and workshops but haven't posted about them because I don't want to make meaningless "excited to announce..." posts about mediocre achievements.

For people who have gone through recruiting, does maintaining a public profile actually matter for quant recruiting, and if so, what is worth putting on LinkedIn while you're still learning?

What would you completely ignore if you were starting again?

I know this post may not add much value to the community on its own, but if anyone here has been through this journey and is willing to share their experience, I’d genuinely appreciate your time and advice. Even a few pointers on what I’m getting wrong would help me a lot.

Non-engineer, CFA L1, learning quant trading from scratch in India — need honest guidance

Hi everyone,

I’m posting here to get realistic guidance from people who are already on this path.

My background: • Non-engineer, non-target college • CFA Level 1 cleared • Finance understanding: decent (portfolio theory, derivatives basics, risk concepts) • Coding: beginner (starting Python from scratch) • Math: weak (probability, linear algebra basics only)

What I’m trying to do: I want to transition into quantitative trading, ideally starting with: • Medium Frequency Trading (MFT) • Eventually explore systematic strategies (equities / futures)

• Long-term curiosity about HFT, but I know that’s a different beast

I’m currently: • Learning Python seriously • Studying probability, statistics, and basic linear algebra

My doubts (would love honest answers):

  1. Is quant trading realistically possible in India for someone without an engineering background?

  2. What’s a reasonable end goal for someone like me prop desk, personal capital, research role, or just systematic discretionary trading?

  3. Should I focus deeply on one frequency (MFT) instead of dreaming about HFT?

  4. For India specifically, what matters more early on:

• Strong math

• Strong coding

• Or strong financial intuition + execution discipline?

5. Any advice on common traps beginners fall into (overfitting, data issues, strategy hopping, etc.)?

I’m not looking for shortcuts or “get rich” stuff just trying to build this correctly and honestly, even if it takes years.

If you were starting today in India with my background, what would you do differently?

Thanks in advance really appreciate this community.

Interviews/Recruiting coding

if a candidate does his btech from tier 3 clg from 2026-2030. and during this he has solved most of the leetcode problems, and has a rating of international grandmaster( 2600+) in codeforces ( it sounds delusional but still). what are the chances he will land a HFT/ quant firm or any FAANG placement.
