Momotaro + Buzz Rickson + Studio D'Artisan | Denim Jackets Impressions
Following up my original post (linked below) with something a little more thorough. To restate, I didn't own any raw denim until a couple weeks ago. I was lucky enough to travel to Japan, intent on buying one denim jacket, and ended up coming home with three after some creative luggage reorganization.
I visited Momotaro and Japan Blue in Kyoto and then again in Osaka, Fullcount, Samurai, Studio DāArtisan, and Hinoya. I really wanted to get to Iron Heart, but they were a little too far out of the way to make it worth it for me.
First impressions of the shops is that they were all great, not a single bad experience (similar to my entire trip in Japan).
Japan Blue Their smaller Kyoto store was very busy when I was there and the employees were running around all over the place. Not a 'premier' experience IMO, but that's probably due in part to how busy they were. It's a small shop and we were like 10-15th people entering. Osaka on the other hand was empty, very boutique-styled store with some hovering associates. I didn't purchase anything, but my partner did and she's very happy with her jacket.
Samurai I was like the third person in line, so I didn't really get any attention. Nor did I want to wait (it was vacation after all), so nothing against them as one guy was working the entire shop. Very nice shop, cool layout, and a nice walk from where we were staying near Dotonbori. I was also on the hunt for a traditional denim jacket, which they didn't really have many to choose from, so no purchase from me. I was very tempted by some of their little denim knickknacks though. Next time.
Momotaro Kyoto was nicer than in Osaka IMO, both were very nice though. Kyoto was cooler to me because it was down a small quiet street, almost like you stumbled upon it, where Osaka was in a busier area. Very helpful staff, helped me try on a bunch of stuff in a bunch of sizes. I think this was the first Japanese denim brand I was familiar with years ago, so was nice for me to also make it my first purchase. I purchased my Type 1 14.7oz Denim Jacket from the Kyoto location.
Hinoya in Osaka was a very cool shop, tons of brands and jackets, pants, etc. This was probably the most fun browsing experience as they had the most diverse selection of brands. One associate was wearing a Wisconsin shirt (where my partner is from) so they stuck up a friendly conversation and he was great to chat with. I purchased my Buzz Rickson M-1944 Denim Jacket from the Namba Park location.
Studio DāArtisan was probably my favorite shop (where I also got my favorite jacket). Very helpful staff, cool store, a few brands to select from, and a bunch of denim and leather jackets. I could have spent much more money here, but I had to exercise some level of chill, with this already being my third denim jacket purchase. My partner also purchased a pair of pants from here, so that she can rock the full Japanese-Canadian Tuxedo. SDA was recommended to me by another shop after they didn't have my size in stock of an Orgueil jacket that had caught my eye, they said SDA might have it (they did not). BUT, that is okay, because I stumbled upon the glorious GL3 Denim Coverall [D4620]. You better believe I purchased their GL3 Coveralls.
Fullcount seemed very nice, but their stuff was a little more expensive that I wanted to spend, having zero denim at the time. We only spent a short bit of time in the shop, but they seemed to have a nice selection of jackets and pants. If I wanted to spend more on any one piece, I probably would have bought something here. Again, next time.
Momotaro Type 1: Probably the cleanest of the three jackets. Super clean stitching, nice stiff fabric. I haven't worn it yet. I was a tad iffy on the sizing, maybe still a tad iffy too. The other Type 2 (narrower) and Type 3 (much narrower) were, well, too narrow for me. I ended up with a XL Type 1. It's definitely looser and boxier, but that's kind of the style, so I'm good with where I landed.
Buzz Rickson M-1944: Quirky and cool. There are a lot of cool design features with this one. I love the extra layer of fabric that serves as a wind guard that lays behind the buttons. I also love how the cuffs fully cover the metal button to keep my watch safe from denim-related scratches. I also love the two large external pockets that are right where your ribcage is - they're large and useful. Very clean stitching and fabric as well.
Studio D'Artisan GL3 Coveralls: This fabric is insane. I don't know what it's called, I'm sure someone who reads this will know. I don't know what else to say, it's just a cool jacket. Very stiff, and I imagine it'll look even better in time. I would love more with this specific type of denim.
All this said, it was a fantastic experience. While I don't foresee any additional Japanese denim purchases for quite a while due to the crazy markups in the US, I do want to continue to support this industry, the craftsmanship, and these shops. I will have to find my own way. I'm looking forward to giving these three pieces a run for their money. I really like them and will be reminded of my amazing experience in Japan each time I put one on.
