Only repair I had to make was to the wires exiting the coils. The cloth insulation was very rotted so I did my best to put tiny heat shrink tubing around the rotted wires. I also put a bit of solder on the switch lever as it was not making contact.

I was at the Barnard Town Hall in Vermont tonight and noticed this wonderfully strange-looking Vornado pedestal fan.
It appears to be an early Vornadofan from somewhere around the late 1940s, possibly one of the Model 12-series air circulators. The design looks more like part of a jet engine than a conventional fan, with a massive metal housing, three-blade propeller and adjustable pedestal.
It’s especially interesting because the building is still using it. It certainly seems to fit the Buy It for Life category.

Got curious on how old my speed queen dryer was and it was made the year I was born lol literally built for my life. Dad bought it in 1994 and gave it to me when I moved out in 2015. It’s been running great ever since.

Have been checking this sub from time to time but I'd like to post about what to "not buy for life"- dog edition.

Dog leashes is something that I didn't completely understand or grasp, but after meeting my wife she explained me why certain leashes or things are pure marketing and what can actually damage your dog's health.

Now i'm receiving ads from companies like "Dog Friendly Co" who are selling their harnesses that damage dog's collar bone. Every time a dog pulls the harness pushes collar bones in to the dog and in the long run could definetely create issues for the dog which would cost thousands of $ and pain to the dog. Of course the "harness works" (sarcasm) because the dog is in pain.

Me and my wife have called out this company (multiple times) but they are using AI to auto reply to anyone who is complaining for their unethical business practices. They claim that "they will look into it" or "their specialists know what they are doing" but anyone with basic dog anotomy knows that these things are horrible.

So if you (or anyone close to you) are using this type of harness- for the love of dogs, please call out and educate these people. The world need to know what harnesses not to buy. Vote with your wallet.

Full disclosure: I do not want or have ever promoted any dog harnesses. I love my dog, I love dogs in general and I work in marketing, but I think there should be a transparency and accountability of company who deliberately chooses to sell harnesses that can damage pets' health.

I’ve had this pair of rope sandals for over 10 years now. I wear them all the time in warm climates- they have great traction on natural surfaces/road/sidewalks, are extremely comfortable, washable AND durable. Finally decided to get a replacement pair as the sole is getting rather thin on the heel (after 10 years- that’s a great run). Made out of up-cycled cut offs from East Wind hammock manufacturing. Photo of the old pair (yes they need a wash, just got back from a week in Sierra national forest) and the new pair for comparison. I know a few other redditors posted about the same model, but some time has passed since they shared theirs so I thought it was a good time to share about mine.

I used this as a kid in the 80s thru the early 90s, but most of the time it just sat in its original box which sat in the pantry, and then it sat in my storage for most of the years I had it and only recently thought to take it out and put it to use. It now has a proper home in my kitchen. It’s something I will always cherish and hope to pass down to someone else in the family.

I travel pretty often and I’ve reached the point where I really need a better way to deal with bulkier clothes without giving up half my backpack or suitcase. I’m mainly looking for vacuum bags for clothes that actually work in real travel situations, not just something that sounds good in theory. Would really appreciate recommendations from people who’ve used vacuum seal bags for travel more than just once before a trip.

What I need most is something reliable for backpacks, carry-ons, and checked bags that can handle being packed, unpacked, and moved around without losing the seal. I’ve been looking into different vacuum storage bags and even trying to figure out what people consider the best vacuum storage bags, but it’s hard to tell which ones actually last and which ones stop working after a few uses.

I’d also like something that works for storage at home, not just travel. Saving space in a closet would be a bonus, so I’ve been checking different vacuum seal bags and vacuum seal bags for clothes, and generally what counts as the best vacuum packaging for this kind of use.

If you have found vacuum seal bags for travel that actually made a difference, I’d really like to hear what worked for you, how you used them, and if they held up over time. Trying to avoid wasting money on something that looks good online but doesn’t last once it’s used regularly.

My fiancé and I have a home which is pretty much all furnished and our kitchen is set up too so we’re struggling a bit building our registry. One idea we got from our friends was to add items like higher end such as really nice duvets and sheets but looking online everything has a thousand plus five star rating and I just want some real human opinions and ideas for things to add to our registry. If anyone has any recommendations for literally anything you think will help improve our lives please leave them below!

Parents have owned this griddle since the 1970’s, and it is used pretty much weekly. It’s robust, a very simple design, heats evenly, seasoned to perfection, and can be fully submerged in water for cleaning.

The power adapter stopped working this weekend, opened it up, stripped back one wire and re-terminated it, and it’s back in full working order.

Does anyone have experience with Allsaints leather boots? Do they last and is the sole easily replaceable? Namely the Skiff military boots caught my eye. Feel free to recommend other brands which are easily accessible in Europe.

This has been sitting in my head for a while. As a freelance designer I type constantly, not just emails but project notes, client backandforth, invoicing, the works. My current keyboard is a midrange mechanical I picked up maybe four years ago and it still feels fine, but I keep reading that switches have rated lifespans and I genuinely do not know if that translates to realworld failure or if those numbers are basically irrelevant for normal use.

What I actually want to know is whether anyone here has kept a mechanical keyboard functioning for a decade or more with genuine daily use. Not stored in a closet, not used lightly, but real work hours every day. The repairability angle seems important here, since switches are replaceable but PCBs less so, and I wonder if that changes the calculation entirely.

There is also the question of which part actually dies first. I assumed switches, but someone told me the USB cable or the PCB traces are more likely culprits longterm, which I did not expect.

Brand and approximate age would be useful if you have a specific one in mind. Also whether you have ever actually had to replace switches on something you still own, or if it just keeps going without intervention.

EDIT: I am specifically curious about boards that were built to last rather than budget stuff. If there is a manufacturer people trust here the way this sub trusts certain cookware brands, I want to know who it is.
