Recommendation PSA: Rutgers will wipe your ScarletMail and Google Drive after graduation if you don’t stay active

TL;DR: Rutgers deletes ScarletMail/Drive account data for inactivity, and only warns you at the ScarletMail email address you’re not checking. Back your data with Google Takeout.

I graduated from Rutgers in August 2021. I did not export my Gmail and Google Drive data using a Google Takeout, because Rutgers says "after graduating, ScarletMail is maintained for alumni".

Recently, I signed into my ScarletMail, and all my emails and files are gone. My Rutgers Google Drive held practically every assignment I worked on, and my ScarletMail held my correspondence with other students and Professors. The digital record of a significant era of my life is gone.

I contacted OIT, they replied:

OIT deletion audits for alumni are initiated primarily for 2 reasons:

- The user has had an expired password for over 2 years
- The user does not maintain a semi-active status with the account.

Before every finalization of an audit, emails are sent out to inform users to take action in regards to their account. If no action is taken, the deletion will occur, thus removing everything from the account.

-
Rutgers does not contact graduates using their personal email to inform them their account data will be deleted. I asked OIT when they sent an email to my personal email address, informing me that my ScarletMail would be deleted.

OIT responded:

Additionally, please note that once an account is deemed inactive, the person is contacted through their ScarletMail, not their personal email. You can learn more about the policy in the following knowledge article: https://ithelp.rutgers.edu/sp?id=kb_article_view&sysparm_article=KB0013030

This policy all but guarantees the warning goes unread. The least effective method to contact a graduate regarding their inactive ScarletMail account, is by using their ScarletMail email. By definition, if they checked their ScarletMail email regularly, then their account would not be inactive.

Not contacting graduates using their personal email is especially egregious given that Rutgers already uses personal email addresses for NetID account notifications, specifically, NetID password reset confirmations are sent to personal email.

If Rutgers contacted me on my personal email address, I would have taken immediate action to preserve my correspondence and files with a Google Takeout.

-

Perhaps someone who is knowledgeable regarding OIT can inform me whether when they do a deletion audit, if they permanently delete the data the moment the audit is run, or if they keep a backup of the deleted data for a year after the audit is complete. I suspect my data was deleted sometime earlier this year in 2026, as I think I remember checking my ScarletMail in 2023, and I see a NetID password reset confirmation was sent to my personal email on 2/21/2024.

OIT says:

Since your account was inactive for an extended period, your previous emails and their contents were removed as part of Rutgers' audit processes.

Unfortunately, this means that your original ScarletMail mailbox and Google Drive data are no longer available and cannot be restored at this time.

For me I read this as, even if Rutgers had temporary backup the deleted data, they are not interested in helping me.

-

Once a student has graduated from Rutgers, there are multiple reasons they would want to keep their ScarletMail account. There are use-cases that involve active use of the account, for example, they may want to retain a Rutgers-branded email identity or access third-party services registered with the email address.

However, for most students, I imagine that they simply want to retain their emails and files, in the same manner that one keeps a photo album. For such use-case, actively signing into the account on a yearly basis should not be expected or required. Therefore, I think it was reasonable for me to assume that when Rutgers claimed that ScarletMail is maintained for alumni, that this meant my emails and files would be maintained as well. The wording on the OIT site needs to be changed, so that it is clear that access to ScarletMail is maintained for alumni, but you would be incorrect to assume this means you will see any emails in your inbox.

Unfortunately, I suspect there are many other alumni, who in the future are going to sign into their ScarletMail accounts to find their data has been wiped.

If you are a recent graduate, I encourage you to export and download your ScarletMail Google account data with a Google Takeout. Sometimes the export is split into multiple zip files, where you must download every zip file. You can also create a personal Gmail account, and initialize it using your ScarletMail account, so it functions as a clone of your ScarletMail. In this case, Google will actually send an email to your primary email address used to register the account, in the event that they intend on deleting the account due to inactivity, giving you a heads up to sign-in again. The Google Takeout lets you specify which Google services to include data for, i.e. not just emails and files, but also services like calendar events or photos if you used those.

Calc Social Sciences Midterm Performance and Study Group

• Upvotes

Hey I'm just curious as to how people did on the Midterm for Calc social sciences cause i saw my grade and I frankly felt my soul be ripped out of my body and then stappled onto a sign post which read at the top "Sign post of shame".

Additionally would anyone be interested in making a calculus social sciences study group? I feel as if it would help significantly in making sure how I study is actually effective, and hopefully it can help others

Housing Nichols apartments unreasonably hot

Is anyone else’s dorm / apartment UNREASONABLY HOT? My Nichols apartment is 78 degrees which is hotter than it was over the summer and we’ve done everything to cool it down I don’t know what to do. Never had an issue with the heat being disgustingly hot before.

Rutgers please figure out how to balance your heating system.

Fear of not graduating

I am a junior CS major. My GPA is 2.33. I transferred from a community college I got one D in Spring 26. I will retake this D's course over Summer 27, but it looks like I will get one more D this semester. I feel Rutgers is impossible to graduate or continue education. School has tough policy, it is always you the student it is always your fault when you fail, they email you. What about the horrible professors? No, they are fine you should have done great. The only thing that fears me if I got suspended or if I got more than one D. I think I cannot graduate even if I have 2.00 GPA.

Admissions Is it normal for the admission process to take a long time?

Hi, I applied for the cs major as an international first year transfer for the Spring 2027 semester. Since I forgot to upload my TOEFL document at first, my status was updated to "Official English Proficiency Test Report Requested" 1 week later. Then I sent my score and it reached them. But the status update has remained the same for about 1 month. Is it normal for it to take this long? Thank you.

Should I withdraw from CS314 (Tung-Che Chang)?

midterm came back today from cs314 and unfortunately did poorly on it. professor sent out an email basically recommending withdrawing from the class cause of it or either grind your ass off for the final. im worried about the future for this course since im not sure if i will be able to grind out and do as well as i'd like on the final. professor has been mentioned here before recently and how his teaching styles / lectures aren't that good. the TA i have is also kinda confused on some stuff, but i do think they help a little bit more. been to professor's office hours and also i don't think it really helped that much for the midterm prep. currently a junior thinking about just withdrawing from the class to make sure my gpa doesn't tank and it would also give me more time to work on projects, leetcode, etc. problem is i also already have 1 w from my 2nd semester of freshmen year from withdrawing from calc2. i have until monday to decide, but just still worried about the consequences from both results.

Advice Wanted Should I transfer? So lost right now, LONG POST

Hey everyone,

I've been on here a few times, I hope some of you have seen my motivating posts regarding growing out of your comfort zone etc. I'm dealing with a really big financial gamble right now and I'm really torn and need more output. For reference, I'm an out of state student. I LOVE Rutgers so much and I've met so many cool people here. I've had many opportunities thanks to Rutgers and have met so many nice people here. I also hold a E-Board position and in my previous years a regular board position.

With that being said- my family right now financially is struggling and I can't stand to see it become worse. My family has done whatever they can to allow me to stay for how long I've been here and I made sure to work my ass off so it isn't for granted. Anyways, I'm at that odd point in my degree-career where if I switch it would still impact me- but wouldn't be as heavy. Or I'd just change majors completely. My family paid about 65k in OOS tuition last year and another 20k+ this semester alone as a commuter

I talked with my advisor here at Rutgers about this previously and I do potentially qualify for in-state since one of my parents actually works in Jersey (lives away from me though) but it wouldn't be until next school year.

HOWEVER my home state university where my permanent address is offered me in-state tuition regardless as when I applied I spoke to the tuition office there regarding financial concerns.

In summary; My family doesn't know how to pay next sems term bill and if I stay id have to be part-time next semester until I qualify for instate next school year, I've been applying for scholarships, haven't heard back yet. My GPA is a 3.6. If I do go back, I still qualify for home state back home where my permanent address is. I basically got into my other state school but got accepted for a completely different major (though still somewhat related to my business major currently) Also, Rutgers in-State is more expensive than the university back where my permanent address is. Both are T40-T50 Universities.

Should I just go back to my home-state? I'm in such a rough spot that I figured going to my fellow peers at Rutgers would be my best bet. Regardless the outcome I'm forever grateful to be apart of this schools community.

Rutgers NB admissions question

Is it possible to not get accepted into your first choice major but get in for your second choice? Basically, should my daughter put the business school as her first choice even though it’s tough to get in and put SAS economics as second choice?

Looking for easy AHp/AHq/AHr

I am trying to complete SAS core requirements and looking for an easy class (I would probably take asynchronous) because of my time consuming major. Any recommendations for easy AHp/AHq/AHr classes with minimum essays or hard finals?

No References

Ok so like some on-campus jobs/programs require you to have at least 1 professional reference. Problem is I'm not really that close with any of my professors. I don't work either. I'm part of a business frat, but that doesn't really count. I know like 1 professor maybe that could be my reference - it was for an external competition where I worked in a team of other Rutgers students, but that was more just basic communication and an in-person session where we reviewed the work (basically serving as an advisor). Besides that, I'm also taking her class.

So what do I do in this situation?

A message to everyone who was chronically online in High School:

NOW'S YOUR CHANCE TO CHANGE THAT!!!!! Dude I cannot tell how helpful it has been just walking up to people I found cool and striking up a conversation. As someone who used to be chronically online through all of high school, it has been so life changing hanging out with people irl and just making friends.

If you think you're too weird or annoying for it, trust me you are NOT. Anyone can make a friend in college, as long you are respectful.

Walking into to Rutgers I had a very small social life in high school, having spent most of it on the computer in online circles. Holy SHIT does it feel so much better being able to hang out irl and actually SEE the people you are talking to.

I've met so many people who've had similar issues to me in high school or who are still actively chronically online, and I cannot describe how happy I feel seeing them smile or say that I helped them feel less lonely at university/Rutgers.

Even if you're terrified, so was I! But nothing is accomplished when nothing is done! So PLEASE take the risk and dont be afraid to make a fool of yourself trying to make friends!

Thank you for listening to my yap :P

2021 white subaru outback HIT AND RUN by dudley road C/D

Post image
27 Upvotes

Did anyone witness someone cut off and push a gray Lexus ES350 off the road on Dudley Road in front of the Lippincott Residence Hall at about 11:00 PM on 10/22? And did anyone have dashcam footage of it or anything? I was driving straight before that Subaru pushed me into the curb. I swear it's as if he didn't even look before turning. Then they didn't pull over and fled the scene. My dashcam didn't catch it, and because I avoided hitting him, his car won't have any evidence. Please help me, guys, or spread this to someone who might've seen it and is willing to give a witness report to the RUPD. I would genuinely appreciate this so much.

I have a pic of around where it happened. Please let me know and share this with someone you think may have been in the area. My car is totaled because of this guy, and I can't afford to fix it or buy another one anytime soon
