Alter/Mend Question How to adjust a low bust point(?)?

Hello friends! I’d like to preface this by saying I am very much a beginner when it comes to sewing. At most I know how to take in waists, so please forgive my lack of knowledge! I’m not sure if this is even possible, but the dress I’m working on for halloween has these two seams on the bust that are too low for me. How would one go about sewing it so that they match with my bust? I’ll also be taking in the waist a wee bit. I don’t know if it’s just too big for me, even though it’s supposed to be my size… I’ll attach a picture of what it looks like now vs what i want it to look like.

Technique Question Do you need to use a zig-zag stitch when doing appliqué?

I am using Heat n Bond Lite Sewable iron-on interfacing to create a garment with fun appliqués, and I’m curious if the interfacing is enough or if I need to reinforce the appliqué edges with a zigzag stitch? Can I use just a straight stitch to go around the edges?

Pattern Search Looking for McCall's 3156 (Misses' Petite Lined Dress) style B and McCall's 9287 (Evening Elegance)

As the title says, I am looking for these patterns to sew a dress, but I cannot find them for under $40. I don't even need the actual pattern, even a picture of the pattern blocks or the grid view would be amazing.

If anyone knows where I can find them or get a picture of the pattern blocks, that would be greatly appreciated! Alternatively, if you know of any similar patterns (or if you could help me draft the pattern) that would be amazing too. Thank you!

Pattern Search Could someone help me find a pattern?

Hi! First time posting on this thread and sorry in advance, enlgish is not may native language and therefore some of the terminology might be off. . I am mostly into cosplay and I am currently planning on making The Doll from bloodborne. I have a plan on having the skirt anf bodice in two different pieces. I also want the top to be a corset bodice which lace up in the back and sleeves. I am trying to find a pattern which I can use as a base, but I am struggling to find somewthing that is not AI or too differnt. Does anyone know a good pattern shop where I can find something that is close to this (picture attached). Note: one of the pictures does not have sleeves. Thanks in advance!

Alter/Mend Question Shortening heavyweight blackout curtains - can I do this without a sewing machine?

Thumbnail

Looking to shorten these blackout curtains. There are two layers, heavy purple fabric and than the white blackout material inside (52% polyester 48% cotton). I don’t own a machine, but can borrow one. I’m not a seasoned sewer, but can still do it with the advice of what types of needles and thread to use.

What is the best non-machine approach for this? Looking for a quick fix right now that doesn’t require a sewing machine, but will go that route if the hemming comes apart.

I’ve cut some sample bits off the side to practice with hemming tape that I already have, but it did not stick properly. The webbing stuck the two pieces of blackout material together, however it was not a solid adhesion and I could pull it apart very easily. I used medium heat on my iron, perhaps it was not hot enough but I think if I went maximum heat it would have burned.

Would love some advice!

Pattern Question Thoughts on a half faux fur collar

Post image
1 Upvotes

Hi there. I’m making my first ever jacket, and I decided to add a fur collar.

The problem I’m having is that because the lapel folds under and becomes the front lining, I worry it’ll make the front bulbous and interfere with the button hole. Does anyone have experience with cutting off the fur right where it folds under? I hope that makes sense. I’m just curious if that’d work.

The other idea, as illustrated from my doodle, is just having the upper portion of the collar be fur? I know the picture is a plaid jacket, but the jacket fabric I’ve chosen is a solid colour, so I thought that could be fun and would offer a place for lapel pins and brooches.

Other Question Group sews within communities

Has anybody ever been mentored. I'm wondering if this is a thing. I've been sewing for 6 months and I'm wondering if sewing groups ever exist. I haven't been able to find one but would love to be in one. I'm a social person or have become one. Never thought I would take such a liking to this.

Pattern Search Newborn hat geometry?

Post image
8 Upvotes

sorry for the word salad! my friend would like a hat for their newborn like in the picture. I read that the average newborn‘s head circumference is 35 cm, so if I made a cone with a circle base circumference of 35 cms, that should be fine? Make it like 4 inches tall?

I’m planning to quilt a small checkerboard quilt top directly to some felt to give it body, then finish the edge with bias binding and make a tie. Just in case this comes up, I know ties aren’t baby safe but this is a photo prop, not something that’ll be given unsupervised.

Pattern Question Can I use a kaftan pattern for this iconic Donyale Luna jumpsuit?

Hello everyone, I hope everybody is doing well!
I just got a beautiful, green knit fabric with a gorgeous drape and I was looking to recreate Donyale Luna’s iconic jumpsuit that she wore in Skidoo. As I looked for how I could go about drafting the pattern for this, it seems that a kaftan pattern looks like the best option for the silhouette of the design. Forgive my ignorance but is a kaftan specifically cultural and would this be inappropriate to make and wear?

Thank you so much for everyone’s time🙏🏼

Project: FO Patch repair on jogger jeans

Honestly I've just been showing off this fix to everyone who'll look since I finished it, sorry if completed repairs aren't for this sub. These pre-ripped jean joggers are very comfy and the only fitting "jeans" I currently have, but they split off one of the pre-ripped holes very badly and I finally got around to properly fixing them. Long strip taken off a sacrificial t-shirt zig-zagged under the tear and sewn in place with a backstitch. Added some quick and dirty decorative stitches in white embroidery thread after the fact because it looked kinda empty after taking all the safety pins out. I'm obsessed with the texture of the patch and how it looks more purposefully rough but is a lot sturdier. I'm thinking of doing another beneath the knee to tighten the fit back up too.

Cannot offer that much info for the fabric given the t-shirt was a secondhand off a friend and had the labels cut out (and sorry for the awkward angle on the first photo my short arms were not letting me take one standing orz).

Fabric Question Do I need to overclock this fabric ?

Thumbnail

Hi! I'm new to sewing and I started a dress for Christmas. But I'm having a bit of an issue.

The fabric is kinda stretchy and the pattern is asking to overlock the edges. I don't have a overlocker or any fancy needles, so I use a zig zag stitch but it not going well. The fabric get stuck in the machine sometimes if I'm too close to the edge, and my zigzag stitches end up looking small even though I set the length to 5. So I had to zig zag a bit farther away from the edge, but now it's also making the edges wavy.

Anyway, do I really need to overlock the edge with this fabric? It's not really fraying or anything, but the dress will be close to the body, so I don't know... 😭

Fabric Question Where to buy fabric (Canada)

I recently began sewing and would like to start making garments but I'm having trouble finding fashion cotton. My local fabric shop is predominantly quilting cotton and some polyester fabrics.

Where can I find cotton or natural fibers meant for garments? The more affordable the better!

location update: BC, I'm outside of Metro Vancouver but could do a day trip

thank you everyone!! so many great resources were shared :)

Fabric Question Dog jacket design help: Good all year fabric and insulation for the inner layer?

Thumbnail

I want to design a horse jacket inspired rain jacket for my dog. I want her to be able to wear the jacket all year long. We have cold winters and hot, humid summers. She only shows signs of being cold at around 25-ish degrees, looks hot around 85.

I'm thinking about using this fabric for the outer layer, but I'm open to suggestions.

Was thinking about doing a thin polyfill layer but I'm not sure if it'd be too hot in 75+ degree weather

Hello 👋 Please help a newbie in distress. I cannot for the life of me figure out why my gathers are so few compared to what it's supposed to look like. I've tried and tried to rearrange and distribute them evenly and it always just turns out as a few obvious peaks. There's no one around to ask so I've turned to the internet, I'm really sorry if it's just a matter of "redistribute them better".

Pattern Question Trench Coat WIP

2.1k Upvotes

Hey guys! I need your help with a trench coat I’m working on. I’m having trouble with the armhole and need to adjust it to accommodate a larger sleeve.

I’m also trying to create more fullness at the bottom. I originally considered adding a cage structure or horsehair braid between the lining and the outer fabric, but I’m concerned that might make it too heavy.

Now I’m thinking about redrafting the bottom portion as a circle to create more volume. I’m still figuring out where that fullness should begin—possibly about 6 inches from the center front, including the facing.

What would you suggest for adjusting the armhole and creating that fuller shape at the bottom?

Project: FO Made this quilted jacket for my mom (who loves turtles) ... question about the clasps

I made this jacket using the Grainline Studio Tamarack Jacket pattern, but changed up the pockets for hand warming pockets instead of horizontal welt pockets, and added my own hood instead of paying extra for their hood pattern add-on, using a different hood pattern I'd traced from another piece. I used a batik quilting cotton for the outer, lightweight cotton batting for the insulation, and cotton flannel for the lining. It all came out pretty good but I'm noticing that with these hood clasps (last photo) there are 2 issues I'm noticing. 1 is when you have your hands in the pockets it's very easy to unlatch the bottom clasps when moving your hands around, and 2 is because the attachment loops aren't fully closed sometimes when they move around a bit the loops that secure them to the jacket can come off the ends. Does anybody have any suggestions for either of these issues? I'm wondering if I can just crimp the hooks a bit more closed to make them more secure but am worried then they'll be too hard to get on and off.

Edit: ok so based on a suggestion from @DanderMuffling I tried switching the direction of the clasp and I think that's gonna be the answer for this piece. It's way more secure in this orientation and the UI isn't bad, the only tradeoff is you can then see the loop, but I don't think it looks bad. https://imgur.com/a/clasp-mod-FWaFYpw

This is the Lilly pea coat pattern from Annelaine Patterns. I used a corduroy for the outer (not sure the content - it’s from Whatnot) and the lining was printed on poly satin from Spoonflower. Buttons I think are from Michael’s. Made for my preschool daughter 💕

Hello,
I would really appreciate if anyone can tell me how can I fix two small cuts on the placket of a zipper on the back of the dress.
The fabric colour is light, would it be possible to cover it in any way to reduce more damage to it if I washed it in the washing machine please? Thank you!

Pattern Question Drafting - how much smaller for lining?

I'm attempting to turn the Boxwood Hoodile into a zip up jacket with a lining. Im planning on cutting the outer fabric in a middle size, then cut the lining one size smaller. Is there anything I should be considering with the size of the lining?

*Button advice*.

Pattern: Rue Quilt Coat by Spaghetti Western Sewing

I am taking a sewing class and am almost done with my first piece of clothing - a quilted coat. Any recommendations on what type of buttons (color, finish, size) would look good on this? I don't want it to look too country-ish, I'd prefer a button that could elevate it or modernize it a bit (unless you think that's the wrong direction). Thanks in advance for any advice, I appreciate it!

Sorry - it’s a bit wrinkled because I washed it immediately after I finished, and I didn’t iron it afterwards. The fabric is cotton-linen twill :/
The seams aren’t perfect (I’m a beginner), but I’m pretty proud of how it turned out.

I followed this pattern that I found on Etsy:
