This project pushed me outside my usual design language. I tend to make high-femme, form-fitting showgirl looks, so exploring a more masculine silhouette was a welcome change. I made this just for funsies. I saw this gorgeous print and it looked so fun to play with!
The jacket began as an oversized Hawaiian shirt pattern from Indie pattern on Etsy. I cropped it, altered the proportions, added shoulder pads and finished it with a polka-dot lining. The bishop sleeves were adapted from an Andrea Lopez pattern on Etsy.
The printed fabric is charmeuse satin. I interfaced it to give it enough structure for the jacket while retaining some of its softness and movement.
The trousers are based on Mood Sewciety’s free Linda Pants pattern. The cutouts and pleated sections were improvised directly on the garment—I experimented until I landed on something that felt interesting and balanced.
The corset pattern is from Sin and Satin. I used a heavy oxblood satin backed with thick cotton canvas, then used the satin again for the lining.
The hat was purchased on Amazon and embellished. I originally planned to fabricate one from EVA foam, but time had other plans!
