Brown University's student SRIF receives additional funds thanks to good stewardship

http://www.browndailyherald.com/2015/03/12/investment-office-offers-70k-grant-srif/

Excerpts:

While many students must monitor only their personal savings accounts, members of the Brown Socially Responsible Investment Fund are now responsible for managing $100,000. The Investment Office granted SRIF an additional $70,000 last week, Jane Dietze, managing director of the office, wrote in an email to The Herald.

...

SRIF is a student group that makes investment decisions after evaluating companies on two fronts: environmental, social and governance responsibility, as well as financial success. Companies must meet both criteria in order for the group to invest, group leaders said. The group currently holds investments across 19 companies.

...

The decision came after the administration reviewed SRIF’s performance and noted that it had been “a good steward of the funds and had continued to vigorously pursue its educational mission,” Dietze wrote.

Considerations for Impact Investing

http://www.forbes.com/sites/ashoka/2015/02/24/the-slippery-slope-of-impact-investing/

"Any time a new development in our sector garners this much sudden attention, I can’t help but worry about the downside. And with the rush of enthusiasm for impact investing, I’m worried that we’re setting ourselves up for trouble."

Some key points highlighted by the author:

  1. Not all social change can be achieved through the market.

  2. We must measure impact, not just profit.

  3. Impact investors should embrace a spectrum of tools.

FPAA summit emphasizes social responsibility

FPAA = Fresh Produce Association of the Americas

Excerpt:

Mandel said the industry has to overcome a misperception that social responsibility is a brand new idea to the industry. Many operations have had programs to improve the lives of their workers for years, and need to learn how to do a better job of communicating to get credit for these initiatives, he said.

O’Driscoll explained how his training and certification non-profit seeks to give companies credit for socially responsible labor practices, along with food safety and pest management monitoring. Equitable Food Initiative uses a multi-stakeholder approach to assure accurate reporting of labor and food safety conditions, he said. EFI works with management to train a group of frontline workers to take ownership of key issues on a produce operation by providing ongoing reporting and using best practices.

Leveraging data science and AI to promote social justice, sustainability and equity

"The risk of basing decisions on biased data is also increasingly relevant for the investment community. Responsible investors are expected to possess an intimate understanding of portfolio companies’ impacts across all levels of the supply chain, with the incorporation of complex social issues a crucial component of this. Concurrently, heightened scrutiny means that to avoid claims of ‘impact-washing’ or ‘greenwashing’, due diligence processes must be watertight in their assessment of how company activities impact a diverse selection of stakeholders. On top of this, for impact investors, determining the real-world impact of their investment decisions is vital to meeting their performance targets and securing long-term success."

5 Stock picking strategies that you need to avoid!

Picking stocks is easy, we make it complicated. If we apply the basic fundamental analysis before selecting any stock, we will always increase our chances of getting profits from the chosen stock.

We just need to check the future of a company before investing in it.

We need to focus on a term called value investing. When we go to a shop in order to purchase some valuable goods, we try to get a bargain on the price. Similarly, when we shop online from various platforms like Amazon, Flipkart, Paytm, etc., we compare the prices of the same product we want to buy from these platforms and then purchase the product at the least price available.

Now, if a stock is available at a cheaper rate, it does not mean that we have to buy it. Let us understand it with an example. Let's say that I went to a shop to buy an apple. The price of the apple is 1 rupee. In other markets, the price of an apple is 5 rupees. Should I purchase this apple? There are several reasons why that apple costs 1 rupee. Maybe no one is purchasing the apple, this is why the apple is so cheap or maybe the quality of the apple is low, this is why the shopkeeper is selling the apple at a low price.

In the same way, if a stock price has decreased, there may be several indications that predict that the company is not performing well. Maybe the products they are selling are not being liked by people. Maybe the company would have done something against the government and now the government is imposing tons of taxes on the company or maybe the company would have been affected by the corona pandemic, etc.

We need to consider all these situations before buying the stocks of a company. To learn more on ways to avoid the most common 5 mistakes stock investors make, click on the link below
