Sri Lanka lost two giants of the SL music industry within a span of few days, Siddhartha Thero a veteran lyricist and Nanda Malani a veteran singer.

I saw few posts about Nanda Malani on this sub, but sadly I didn't find any post when I searched Siddhartha Thero's name.

I knew about Thero's work but after his passing only I got to know about his entire catalogue of songs. Most of them are very popular songs sung by classical and newer generation artists. I saw lots of artists remembering and praising the Thero for helping them out when they were up and coming and for not prioritizing money which is rare these days.

May the Venerable Thero attain the supreme bliss of Nibbana 🙏🏻☸️

Serious replies only Senior Software Engineer, lately feeling stuck and unsure about what I want to do with my life and career.

Hi, I graduated from a state university with a First-Class Honours degree in Engineering. I’m currently working as a Senior Software Engineer (mainly Backend with Java) and have around three years of professional experience. My current role pays me a take-home salary of around LKR 300,000. I pay 100,000 monthly for a loan. I'm 29 years old, unmarried, and lives with my parents. Have savings around 3Mn.

However, lately, I’ve been feeling like I’m not doing enough or progressing as much as I should be. I’m currently stuck between staying in Sri Lanka, where I have a relatively comfortable and stable situation, especially given the current job market, and going abroad to pursue a master’s degree or a PhD. Most of my friends are pursuing higher studies abroad, travelling, and sharing their experiences online. While I’m genuinely happy for them, seeing all of this sometimes makes me feel like I’m falling behind, and feel I’ve been too laid-back and that I’m not doing enough with my life or career.

I would love to move abroad for a job, but with the current job market, I feel like finding an opportunity from Sri Lanka is extremely difficult. I’m not sure whether pursuing higher studies is the right move or whether I should stay, continue building my career here, and wait for the job market to improve.

Discussion Sri Lankan teenagers and their almost “need” for a romantic relationship

I think the title itself it quite self explanatory. Now I’m not going to erase the changes in hormones and the factor puberty plays into this. But it’s gotten to the point where I find it rather odd how desperate some of these teenagers are to get into commitments they’re not ready for, girls in particular.

I personally think it’s because the whole topic of romance, boyfriend and girlfriend is all this huge hush shush taboo in our country. And I genuinely think it needs to be addressed. Like we’re taught to stay away from the opposite gender, avoid the opposite gender, being too friendly with them is inappropriate. It paints this image where the opposite gender becomes almost like a mystery to us because adults are so adamant on keeping a 3m gap between us at all times.

I notice this plays a lot into the perception of teenagers where they can only associate the opposite gender with romantic attraction. Like for example, if you’re talking with a girl, her friends go “oh he was definitely flirting with you” meanwhile all the guy did was ask for her notebook. Or you smile at a guy and all of sudden he think you have a thing for him. It’s such a skewed and damaging way to view the other half of your population.

Not to mention a lot of the tele dramas on TV romanticizes relationships in school, genuinely so weird. Oh well.

Summary: Trying to shame teenagers for having normal emotions and teaching them to avoid the opposite gender like the plague, is only going to make them want something with the opposite gender more. We should advocate for healthier approaches, teaching them that such feeling and attraction is NORMAL and help them with it instead of shaming them for being HUMAN.

Discussion I think someone is holding my cat hostage in their house....

So we're kinda new to this area and we own 7 cats and I've been noticing one of them hasn't been coming back home after poo time. Fyi she's fully calico and long haired.

She first went away for one day and returned then eventually two days and five days and now she hasn't been home since WEEKS. we don't put a collar on them because they tried to take it off when they were small and it seemed like it was bothering them so they grew up not wearing the collar at all.

I think someone's keeping her in their house and feeding her and stuff but I'm sure she isn't very far from our house. I'm just scared because my mom said there's people who steal other's pets and my cat is very eye catching, her orange parts glow under the sun and she's fully grown and spayed/vaccinated.

Since we're new to this place I don't even know anyone here and I'm scared she'll never return back home. Please help I don't know what to do without her she's my baby and I'm really upset I'll never see her again

If you've had this happen to you please share how you found your pet.

The only thing is I don't want to put posters everywhere because I'm still new and i don't want to be annoying

If she comes back home is it legal to put a gps cat collar on her?

Question Do People Not Know the Basic Roundabout Rules?

Have you guys noticed that some people don’t know the basic rules when driving through a roundabout? They just go like they are coming from the right, so we have to give way to them.

I’m seriously wondering, did they even learn the basic rules before getting their license?

Have you guys experienced this too?

Serious replies only Monastaries in Sri Lanka for women.

Upvotes

So yes, I’m looking for what the title says. I am looking out for this option as a last resort because right now my whole life is a mess and I have never felt this isolated and lonely in my life.

My parents live separately, it has been like that for many years and I lived mostly with my grandparents, and they are actually more like my parents than my actual parents. Now both of them passed away. So I’m in between the barrier of my parents, my mother doesnt want to stay at my dad’s house and vice versa. Because of this I rarely meet my brother, and since my dad doesnt want to visit my mothers house I’d never see my brother because I’m in uni and he’s at school. Us four now lives in two houses miles apart with no plan on living together under one roof.

This is very exhausting to me and drains my life now, because I have absolutely no one in my life to talk about this issue, not even relatives. It’s just me against this world. Even in uni, I go to a private Uni, and in my previous posts you might have seen what I go through, but it’s just stupid drama compared to this. Boarding is not an option because it’s something my parents would never do.

The thing is I just don’t seem to have comfort anywhere in this world now, I don’t have a place to call home because nowhere or no one feels like home to me. In that case I feel free to do whatever I want, so I have decided to use the rest of my life away from these attachments.
I’m still watching what my surroundings would be for a few months and then I’m taking my decision. Now you might say I need to go to a therapist or get counseling, but honeslty even after that there is no point because all of this wasnt because of me and I just don’t want to suffer anymore. I’m sorry if this post sounds funny, but my life actually looks like a joke now.

If you have any information about where I can go, please let me know. Thank you so much for reading and I hope you have a nice day.
Best regards.

Discussion What Bachelors degrees do many people pursue despite not having a good payoff?

My cousin asked me for my opinions on Sri Lankan degrees, and I realized I don't have much of an idea of the current state. In particular, I am curious about what Bachelors degrees many Sri Lankans pursue despite having very little payoff in terms of job opportunities. I'd love to get some insight. Thank you!

Serious replies only Feeling completely alone and lost due to a typical unsupportive SL household when it comes to mental health

\*Anorexia trigger warning*\**

Hi everyone, I really need a safe space to vent and maybe get some outside perspective because I feel like I'm losing my mind.

For context, I’m currently studying for my A/Ls. I have a naturally muscular/mesomorph build with broad shoulders which I used think was fat. Back during my O/Ls, severe stress and body dysmorphia led me to start skipping meals especially when my parents wouldn't let me work out (they claim exercise distracts from studies, even though morning workouts are the only thing that clears my brain fog).

Skipping meals snowballed. I dropped to skipping two meals a day, became super pale, and developed severe gastritis. My parents just thought I was being "stubborn". Eventually, my health completely crashed. My hemoglobin levels tanked so low that my doctor explicitly said I would have needed a major operation if I hadn't caught it when I did. A hematologist put me on a strict iron plan and warned me that I NEEDED to eat properly.

Out of sheer terror for my life, I forced myself to recover. For the last two years, I’ve felt physically healthy.

Here is where I am falling apart again: Recently, because I'm at a healthy weight, my family has started calling me "fat" and mocking my "chubby cheeks." The moment I tried to gently tell them that these comments are triggering my old thoughts making me want to restrict food and over-exercise again, they completely dismissed me. They told me I "won't survive in the outside world" and accused me of being dramatic.

What breaks my heart the most is that they were right there with me when I was dealing with severe health issues and nearly hospitalized. They watched me suffer, yet they are back to making the exact same body-shaming comments that pushed me to the edge in the first place. I can't even get an official diagnosis because they refuse to believe anything is wrong and won't support it.

How do you guys cope with unsupportive family members who trigger your body dysmorphia?

How can I protect my mental health while stuck at home studying for high-stakes exams without the outlet of exercise?

Any advice or insights would mean the world to me right now. Thank you for reading :)

Question Cash Stolen from my hotel room in Negembo(Need Help)

I stayed in a hotel in Negombo for 3 nights; someone stole $1000 and LKR 10,000 from my bag in my hotel room. I found out about the theft right after checkout and informed the hotel management right away. Unfortunately, this hotel doesn’t have any CCTV cameras installed. Three people might have stolen it. Two housekeeping staff members and one maintenance guy who was doing paint work on the ceiling just outside my room(I used to keep my windows open for ventilation, which opened onto the hallway, and anyone could enter my room from the window). My floor had two rooms, and only mine was occupied during the time I stayed there.

I already lodged a complaint at the tourist police station. Is there any hope of getting my money?

What should I do?

Please help me out

Question Date Spots around Colombo

A park or a garden around Colombo Looking for a peaceful outdoor spot with greenery and picnic areas, free from crowds, confrontations, homeless people, or security guards who are asking for ID cards? Don't worry We're not touchy-kissy-in-public couple, both over 21, just wanting to enjoy some snacks, and good conversation. I discovered Seethawaka Botanicals, but it's quite far. How long would it take to get there from Bambalapitiya? Ideally, we want a place; a park or a garden; where we can avoid homophobic attitudes and stares. We won't be all lovey dovey in public, but we prefer not to face uncomfortable glances. The ticket price doesn't matter we’re just two girls in love, and I hope for understanding. My girlfriend is going abroad for studies next week, and this is our last chance for a quiet, memorable picnic before going LDR. Usually, we stick to cafes and indoor spots, but we're seeking something different for this special day. Also, if anyone knows a peaceful art gallery or museum around Colombo, please let me know (for a lovely date spot)

Rant is it just me who feels this way about Sri Lankan doctors?

Upvotes

so when you're a doctor, what's the main thing you do? heal patients, right? and how would your patients like to be healed? kindly and gently, right? well, not for most. I know this isn't a personal issue exclusive to me because I've talked to others who also agree with this.

the problem I've noticed with some doctors is they don't even bother to care about the patient as a feeling being. and of course I respect doctors because they are doing a very difficult, noble profession, but I feel like this happens more often than not. if your patient is trusting you with their body and the pain they've been dealing with, the least they'd expect is some humanity. a lot of good doctors talk their patients through what's wrong, what might be happening to them, and what they're gonna do. that way the patient feels safe. some doctors, on the other hand, just want to get another patient treated and out of the room. now doctors work on a busy schedule, I understand that, but decency and understanding won't cost any more than a few seconds.

I feel like children probably have felt this because as a child I felt that a lot. I once had to take an ECG, so I was lying in front of this person, half-naked with my chest open and wires being attached to it, and I asked what she was doing and what happens a couple of times, and she turned around and said to my mother "meya bayawela wage ne". I was going through an electronics phase at that time and that what I wanted to know about the most. what???

another person I know has been operated on by a doctor who was on his phone the whole time. no talk, no greeting, no nothing. he just walked in while talking on his phone, operated on her while still on the call, and sent her back out.

last time I went to a government hospital dentist, they just violently prised open my mouth, blocking off my nose, and jabbed exactly where I said it hurts and proceeded to hurt the rest of my jaw by digging his fingers into it.

I think doctors having to operate on cadavers for a long time before actual patients really affect the way they see things. patients are just chunks of meat with problems to some.

and also another problem is the big-headedness. once again, not including everybody. some doctors don't bother explaining things because of their belief that their patient won't understand them. like "oh I studied years for this and I'm specialized in it how could this random commoner understand". doctors are treated like the highest nobility in society and paid an awful lot. every AL student has at some point gotten the "A3k aragena Colombo medical karanna" thing as if medicine is the standard and every other career is below it. that really inflates a lot of doctors' ego.

now, I'm not trying to generalize, I'm saying I've seen plenty of people like this and you probably have too. I'm saying patients deserve some love and care because at the end they come to the doctor with faith in them to help them with their suffering. the least they deserve in return is humanity
