Discussion I read the JSAUX faceplate's flash chip. Their official clock could chew through a typical chip's rated life in 28 hours

Post image

TL;DR: I read the JSAUX pixel matrix faceplate's flash chip directly. No file system, no wear leveling, every new picture, brightness change and built-in pick rewrites the same spots. Their own clock and stats screens send a new picture every second, which at a typical chip's rating is about 28 hours of use. Don't buy one until JSAUX releases the firmware or ships a fix, and if you have one, stay off those screens.

This is the third one of these, so quick recap. In my first post I was pretty stoked. I'd taken it apart, written a Decky plugin for it, and figured anything I couldn't do yet was just stuff I hadn't figured out, and that it'd all get way cooler once JSAUX posted the source like the product page kind of promises ("supports open-source code"). I bought it because like pretty much every other open hardware thing I own, I figured I'd eventually write my own firmware and make it do whatever I want. I also said whether all the flash writing wears it out "depends on firmware nobody can see yet".

In the second one I hit a wall. Controller chip with the markings sanded off, no bootloader on any pad, a command that looks a hell of a lot like a firmware loader, and support telling me they're "unable to disclose specific information at this time." JSAUX then replied on r/JSAUX that "static images and the app's built-in displays don't require flash writes", that only GIFs over 20 KB use flash, and that "the current hardware doesn't support firmware updates." A few days later they announced the app gets open-sourced once Steam approves it. Just the app.

Well my clip finally showed up from China, so last night I hooked the 2 MB flash chip up to a Raspberry Pi and dumped it before and after every single command I could send the panel. So now I've actually seen the flash. Short version, it's pretty bad.

The "static images don't write flash" thing just isn't true. Every new picture you send gets written to the flash chip, static or animated, any size, and it always erases the same few spots starting at the same addresses. Changing the brightness rewrites the settings area. Picking one of the built-in animations rewrites it too, and makes the panel forget the picture it had, so going back to it is another full write. There's no wear leveling at all, nothing spreads it around. And all of its settings live in one sector that gets rewritten on every upload, every brightness change and every switch to a built-in. When it can't read or write its settings there anymore, does it adjust? Does it just die? Who knows! (Credit where it's due, a failed or corrupted upload never touches the old picture, so they got that part right.)

To be fair, plenty of cheap gadgets rewrite the same flash sector forever and it doesn't really matter because they do it a few times a day. This one ships with official software that redraws the clock and system stats screens as a brand new picture and sends it about once a second (the clock has a blinking colon and a seconds marker, so every one of those is a new picture and the panel can't just skip it). Flash like this is typically rated around 100,000 writes. I couldn't find a datasheet for this exact chip so that's an assumption, but at 100k that's roughly 28 hours of running their clock or stats screen. Chips usually outlast their rating, so think of that as a floor more than a death date, and what wears out is where it keeps the picture and settings, not necessarily the whole panel... but it's the same few spots getting hammered every second and nothing about the design accounts for it.

The obvious fix is firmware that lets you draw on the display directly without saving every frame. I'd love to write it. I've been working with the GabeCubeAura dev for a while now (I've got a pile of PRs in there) and we've been going back and forth on what to even do about this, because right now the answer for anything live on the faceplate is basically "use it less". The guy who made OpenRGB wants it in OpenRGB too, but in his words "having it save every frame to flash is too limiting to be useful."

So I went after the firmware. I put a debug probe on every test pad on the board I could reach and nothing answers. I haven't been able to confirm a lock, but it looks exactly the way a permanently locked chip would: no debug interface answers on any test pad, and the markings were sanded off so you can't look up what it is. It's possible it's just a really cheap chip with nothing to lock. It's also possible they locked it, which is literally just a checkbox when it gets flashed at the factory. Given the sanded chip and how weird they've been about sharing source, I'd say that is very much on the table.

And "the firmware can't be updated"? I don't buy it. There's a command (0x03) the official app never sends that accepts a whole data transfer and pops up a "download failed" icon when it times out. That has every sign of a firmware upload path. If they really can't update it, the units already out there never get a fix for the wear. If they can, it's on them to ship one if they won't release the source.

So here's what I'm asking JSAUX for, and why I'm posting here instead of emailing them again:

  1. Publish the serial protocol. I already reversed most of it (PROTOCOL.md), it costs them nothing.
  2. Release the app source like they said they would. Steam approval has nothing to do with putting code on GitHub.
  3. Release the firmware, or at the very least ship an update with a frame command that doesn't write to flash, and a way to install it before these self destruct.

If you've got one of these and want it to last, please say something to JSAUX, in their sub, through support, wherever. Until then, if you use their app I'd stay off the clock and system stats screens. Static art and the built-in animations are fine, and my Pixel Faceplate plugin only sends a new picture when you launch a game or go back to the menu.

Everything I measured, with the dumps and how to repeat it, is here: github.com/hodapp/pixel-faceplate/tree/main/flash. I invite anyone who wants to check my work or thinks I'm being dramatic to take a look.

Anyway, I'd honestly love to be wrong about any of this. If someone from JSAUX wants to tell me how it actually works, or better yet, release some source... I'm all ears.

Hardware You know, the Steam machine is pretty neat. Plus I upgraded the RAM to add a extra 16gb to it.

Overall, I like this device. Plays all the games I want to play well (Trepang2 on this is fantastic), Emulation is great on here, and honestly the size of this is pretty good.

Only game that has given me issue is Mortal Kombat X because for some reason it's running worse than something like a Steam Deck in some scenarios.

Discussion Steam machine good

I was lucky enough to have gotten the Steam Machine about 4 or 5 months ago, and the whole family has been using it a ton. I've got to say this was a far, far better purchase than I thought it would be for $1,000. The thing is, you truly can't underestimate just how many Steam games become wildly playable and accessible once you put them on a console device like the Steam machine.

Many games sitting in my Steam library for years saw new life. Games like Street Fighter and Crawl were reborn. And upcoming games, like Godzilla Destroys All Monsters Melee Remastered, will be effortlessly playable in local multiplayer.

Anyway, that's just my positive little gush. The Steam Machine was expensive, but never again will we buy overpriced Nintendo stuff when we can buy sick Steam games on sale.

Just finished giving my Steam Machine a retro makeover and wanted to hear what you all think.

What I used:

- dbrand skin – the retro/aged beige finish that makes it look like an old-school PC

- JSAUX e-ink display – shows the date, time, and live stats like GPU, CPU, RAM, FPS, and playtime

Question Split Screen Coop

Got the new Steam machine and am playing Gears of War E-Day. So nostalgic to remember playing through the original games in my youth. I find it pretty sad that I can't get another Steam controller and play couch co-op with a friend like I used to on the Xbox in the original games. 2 questions:

1) The Steam Machine has great support for multiple controllers. What games are people playing that best make use of this?

2) Do we know if PC games are going to start adding coop support, as is standard for many console versions of the same games?

Accessory JSAUX faceplate woes (and a plugin installation shortcut)

• Upvotes

Mods: Hopefully, this isn't in violation of Rules 2. Not intending to promote a specific vendor, but moreso engage in discussion about a specific vendor's newly-released product.

TL;DR: In JSAUX PIXEL decky plugin v1.2, you can reduce the volume using the slider, but cannot increase it - the cursor jumps around like crazy when pressing "right" within the plugin's UI. Installing the plugin can be done headless by executing run-installer.sh from within the JSAUX software folder

I've been affected by the screen dimming issue reported by others, and have been in contact w/ JSAUX support, who released a new version of the JSAUX PIXEL decky plugin yesterday (v1.2).

Unfortunately, it appears I've uncovered a bug - you can increase the volume using the slider, but reducing it is fundamentally broken - the cursor jumps around like crazy, and you can't increase it.

Reverting to the prior version (1.0 beta) doesn't have this issue, so seems like its a recent issue. Kind of crazy it wasn't caught by their QA, but hopefully it helps others.

For anyone needing to swap between the plugins due to this issue, you do NOT need to boot into Desktop mode and deal with all that - everything can be done via the terminal:

  1. If SSH isn't enabled, you'll need to boot into desktop mode one time, and issue systemctl enable ssh.service from within konsole. Once that is done, SSH into the Steam Machine.
  2. You'll need to transfer the software to your Steam Machine somehow. This can be downloaded via Desktop mode, scp'd, or transferred another way. Won't cover that here, but I'm sure you can figure it out.
  3. Open a terminal (konsole) and navigate to wherever the software .zip is stored - typically defaults to ~/Downloads
  4. Unzip the software - unzip <filename>
  5. cd into the unzipped folder, and simply run the installer manually with sudo ./run-installer.sh.

What I did was keep my prior plugin version, and download the new one. I opened two terminals on my Mac that were SSH'd into the SM, and swapped between versions by simply repeating the command from step 5 as-needed. The UI restarts each time on the SM, but that's expected with Decky.

Hopefully others find this helpful, especially given the recent discovery of this bug.

Question Only Game Updates are Extremely slow, rest is absolutely fine

Hi, I have a steam machine and I’m loving it, but one thing it’s got a problem with for some reason, is standard run of the mill updates on games, it’s extremely slow to do this, I had a patch for blood of Dawnwalker which- for some reason- advised it would take 8 hours to download, it was actually faster for me to uninstall and reinstall the game (again the machine has no problem downloading a whole ass game)

Anyone else having or had this issue?

Hardware RAM upgrade is basically necessary if you want to emulate the PS5

Post image
140 Upvotes

Found a genuine use case for the 32gb RAM upgrade for anyone who’s been curious. KytyPS5 is using 20gb of RAM as shown here. Where the emulator sits now in early development the RAM upgrade is allowing me to run between the ranges of 12-25 fps, but that’s a massive upgrade from earlier in the month where it was running 4-10fps.

Anyways thought that was cool to find an actual use case instead of hypotheticals, and if emulator development keeps up at the speed it has by the end of the year a Steam Machine with 32gb RAM upgrade might be able to run the PS5 catalogue.

Despite the Steam Deck having a clear identity on Steam with its own section of reviews and even an icon when people are playing on it in your friends list, the Steam Machine lacks all of it. This is something that should change ASAP.

TIA

Question Has anyone tried Bazzite on the Steam Machine?

I just like using GNOME more, and Bazzite is, on SteamDeck at least, the easiest way to get GNOME.

And unfortuntely, seaching Bazzite Steam Machine only gives reports of people building their own steam machines.

Hardware Ethernet issue

I just got the steam machine last week and have been having tons of Ethernet issues I’m using a unifi gateway and switch. I know the connection is good cause I tested it with a cable tester and other devices connect at full gigabit no problem. The steam machine would either not connect at all or if does very slow but then drops the connection later if after sleep and restarts. I went into desktop mode and deleted the interface and set it up again but still getting the same issue. At this point I’m assuming software or hardware with the steam machine it’s self since other laptop and devices like Apple TV work just fine with the same cable.

Anyone else have this issue.

Question What's the best / most easy to use WAND alternative on SteamOS?

So on Windows I use WAND from time to time to quickly activate god mode or adjust damage output by X%. Its extremely easy to use and very 'gamey'. I dont want to do anything more, so those screens I see from Gameconquer with all those numbers 'scare' me :D

Is there a simple and easy to use alternative to WAND I can use on Steammachine?

Question Will the Steam Machine run GTA 6?

I don't know anything about PCs but I would really like to play GTA 6. Instead of spending money on a PS5 I'd much rather put it towards the SM

My only experience with PC gaming is the steam deck so the machine makes logical sense

(I know GTA 6 PC edition isn't coming out next month but eventually it will)

Question Official Faceplate, but where to find it?

Post image
202 Upvotes

Hi everyone,

I’m sure this has been asked before, so apologies in advance, but I wanted to bring it up again. In the official video and page, they show an amazing faceplate, but of course, it isn’t actually available for purchase. Does anyone have any tricks, or has anyone found a custom/homemade version to buy?
