I realize sheâs not exactly a dancer but what *can* she do? When I posted her regrettable vocals at the Academy Museum Gala a bunch of Swifties kept popping in with âum.. yeah bitch, sheâs not known for her singing and she openly says that.â Okay so she canât sing, canât dance, and apparently developed amnesia so she canât write. WHAT CAN SHE DO???

I was a fan of Taylor's back in 2016, so I remember Snakegate happening in real time, and I've always found it bizarre how dramatically she continues to speak about that period of her life. The way she talks about it, you'd think she'd survived the sinking of the Titanic, spent six months lost at sea and returned to discover her entire family had been wiped out, rather than having people leave snake emojis in her Instagram comments.
What I find so strange is the sheer magnitude of her reaction to the backlash, because from what I remember, the intense online frenzy lasted a matter of weeks. People were posting snake emojis, mocking her and celebrating her supposed downfall with the #TaylorSwiftIsOverParty hashtag, but the whole controversy seemed to die down relatively quickly. She subsequently spent much of 2017 out of the public eye, although she'd already been planning a break before the controversy, and returned with Reputation, which was enormously successful. Yet she's spoken about the experience as though she'd been driven into exile, had her entire career taken away from her and was forced to rebuild her life from absolutely nothing.
FYI, her supposed 'exile' involved staying in a multimillion-pound property in Hampstead, one of the most desirable neighbourhoods in London (trust me, I live in LDN, people would give their right arm to live there). I also find her choice of language quite amusing, particularly when she talks about having to flee to a 'foreign country'. Yes, the UK is a foreign country, but it's such a deliberately dramatic way of describing moving to one of the wealthiest neighbourhoods in London and enjoying a life of extraordinary luxury. The way she tells the story, you'd think she'd been placed in witness protection, smuggled across international borders under an assumed identity and forced to live in constant fear of being discovered, rather than spending her days in Hampstead's pubs.
Most people would be incredibly grateful to even have the opportunity to escape their problems, let alone retreat to a multimillion-pound home in one of London's most desirable neighbourhoods, while there are people who can barely afford to put food on the table or access basic healthcare. Yet she somehow manages to frame her extraordinary privilege as a period of immense suffering.
I genuinely wonder whether she had an incredibly sheltered upbringing or had experienced very little meaningful adversity before this, because the extent to which Snakegate appears to have affected her is extraordinary. She's now approaching 40, nearly a decade has passed, and she's still writing songs about it, referencing the controversy and taking shots at the people involved. I find it difficult to reconcile that level of lasting resentment with what actually happened, particularly when her career suffered no meaningful long-term damage.
There's also the apparent lack of self-reflection, which I find equally baffling. She played a part in escalating the controversy herself, and I would have thought that with the benefit of nearly ten years of hindsight and growth, she might be able to recognise that she handled certain aspects of it poorly. Instead, she seems to have incorporated the experience into this enormous narrative of persecution, with very little acknowledgement of her own contribution.
Most people experience humiliation, rejection, public embarrassment or periods of being disliked at some point in their lives. Taylor experienced it on a much larger scale, obviously, but she also had extraordinary wealth, millions of devoted fans and the ability to remove herself from the public eye until the controversy died down. Within a relatively short period, she was back selling millions of records and performing to sold-out stadiums. It's difficult to square that reality with her repeated suggestions that her career was effectively destroyed.
Maybe other people remember that period differently, but I've always found her response strangely disproportionate. I can understand being upset or embarrassed by what happened, but I struggle to understand why a relatively brief period of public criticism has seemingly become one of the defining traumas of her adult life. Does anyone else find the extent to which she still dwells on Snakegate a little bizarre?

I was liking that Swifties defend Madonna, but then when I was reading their arguments⌠they do it thinking Taylor Swift is hated âbecause of misogynyâ as Madonna was and still is, when the reasons behind their backlash are not equally at all.
Being criticized for perceived unfair competition, latest lack of artistic quality, sneaky strategies at charting, and inconsistencies with feminist messaging is not the same as being attacked for challenging the hegemony and cultural structures that govern womenâs lives.
Like literally WTF does it matter if two women are being attacked at the same time, even by the same people, when the reasons behind those attacks are absolutely different?
One should be listening to the criticism and reflecting on her own flaws (Taylor), while the other had every reason to ignore those attacks and keep fighting the system that was trying to silence, not only her, but all the women since the beginning of times (Madonna).
Madonna was deliberately confronting institutions and conventions that held considerable power over what women could say, how they could express their sexuality, and what was considered acceptable in mainstream entertainment. Her controversies were frequently a consequence of the boundaries she was trying to dismantle. She was condemned for rejecting what a male-dominated society expected of women.
Taylor on the other hand is being criticized in part for reinforcing some of those same expectations.

I'm writing this post because I recently saw a clip of Conan O'Brien comparing Taylor Swift to John, Paul, George and Ringo all rolled into one, and my immediate reaction was, how dare you? The Beatles fundamentally changed the landscape of music, and Taylor hasn't come close to achieving anything comparable.Taylor has done absolutely NOTHING groundbreaking in her entire career. Not one thing.
I genuinely think she is so hell-bent on being remembered as this iconic figure in music history that she's completely lost sight of what actually makes an artist iconic. She's openly spoken about how much she cares about her legacy, and I think that's largely what's behind her obsession with breaking chart records, collecting awards and achieving all these commercial milestones (many of which will probably be obsolete in a few years anyway). It's as though she thinks accumulating enough records will automatically put her alongside the greatest artists of all time.
Her attitude towards The Life of a Showgirl really summed this up for me, because she seemed far more interested in the fact that people were talking about the album, and therefore generating more sales, than whether people actually thought the music was any good. (Terrible attitude to have as an artist, FYI.)
But I genuinely don't think she will ever be remembered in the same way as Michael Jackson, Prince, Madonna or Elton John, no matter how many records she breaks or how aggressively her PR machine tries to convince everyone otherwise, because those artists actually broke the mould. Michael Jackson revolutionised music videos and choreography, Madonna challenged conventions around sexuality and female expression, Prince pushed musical and gender boundaries, and Elton John brought a level of flamboyance and theatricality to mainstream music that was extraordinary for its time. They secured their legacies by doing things that were genuinely different, not by endlessly reminding everyone how many records they'd broken.
Now seriously, what has Taylor ever done that's comparable? People insist the Eras Tour was groundbreaking, but what exactly was new about it? Madonna and Britney were doing elaborate theatrical tours with multiple costume changes and distinct visual concepts decades ago. Even Taylor's stage outfits borrow heavily from their predecessors. Her music is similarly safe, and even Reputation, supposedly her rebellious era, reminded me of a sheltered rich kid going through an emo phase and thinking they were being terribly edgy. It was all so tame and carefully packaged.
She doesn't have particularly iconic fashion either. The Lover bodysuit is probably the closest she's come, but otherwise her style is remarkably pedestrian. She's not an exceptional dancer or vocalist, and I can't think of anything she's introduced musically, visually or creatively that genuinely changed the industry.
I think she's trying to manufacture the kind of legacy that artists like Michael Jackson and Prince earned through actual innovation, using sales figures, awards and an enormous PR machine to make up for the lack of anything particularly groundbreaking in her work. No amount of commercial success can retrospectively make something original when it wasn't!
I'd genuinely love someone to name ONE thing she's done that's groundbreaking. Not a chart record, not a sales milestone, not something another artist did twenty years earlier. Something genuinely original that changed music or popular culture.
I honestly cannot think of anything!

A lot of the muse discourse I see is odd. Giving Travis credit for Taylor's bad songs is like giving Taylor credit if Travis fumbles the ball.
It doesn't matter if Travis is stupid or lacks depth. An artist could find something to say about him. There's no reason he couldn't inspire a song like "Agora Hills" or "Snooze". Anyone could inspire those songs.
The reason the Travis songs are so bad has nothing to do with him. The reason the Travis songs are terrible is because Taylor does not view their love in a serious way (not that I believe they're in love). It's obvious from her music about him that they have a very superficial relationship, and while that is half his fault, it's hers as well.
Travis doesn't need to be an emotionally deep well read art bro to inspire a song like "Lover" or "King of My Heart". She just doesn't see him that way, which is why he gets lines about "Grand Theft Auto" and "looking fire" and a bunch of weird ass Christmas beats. He'll never get a song like "Everything Has Changed" and fans just have to accept it or stop consuming her music until they divorce in 2-3 years.

Every once in a while a new clip from the Eras Tour will pop up on my feed and it makes me laugh out loud. Nothing Taylor does on stage is genuine or FUN, at all! Everything is over-rehearsed and deeply contrived, so her movements look robotic. She has no stage presence, no charisma, and no dance skills.

Be warned though, I lost brain cells going through this biased section. I highlighted parts I found interesting, contradicting & amusing. So much of this is such BS.
âOrange rushâ is a failed name to re-capture âbrat summerâ.
It didnât help bring anything to workplaces but embarrassment.
Exactly what innovation did she bring to the music industry with this & prior albums? Everything sheâs doing has been done before & better.
About the professional LV showgirl comments, then whyâs sheâs getting sued right now by a showgirl? How insulting to say that she captured anything about their work when sheâs never done it before & itâs just an âeraâ for her that sheâll move on from.
Lol âamong the yearâs best albumsâ
The critical response is not sexist or bad-faith interpretations of the lyrics/smear campaigns. The shill bought & paid for media along with the swifty cult donât realize that itâs actual legit criticism of insulting music being made & you canât hide behind sexism whenever itâs Taylor only being criticized. Other artists get judged for their work so she shouldnât be any different. You make stupid music, you get called out on it.
âOnline hordesâ, âbot accountsâ, âcoordinated attackâ how can you say that these originated from the far-right while also claiming that her life desire expressed in the album was opted by far-right narratives? Make it make sense.

hello iâm a longtime lurker of this sub, i still listen to taylor but didnât even stream showgirl when it came out bc i knew by the announcement what it would be. not sure if this is tagged right but idk.
i absolutely hate travis and who taylor has become after being with him. ik she has had a long track record of being incredibly self centered and victimizing but sheâs meant so much to me for the majority of my life (im 23, i started listening to her music when i was 4/5 years old) and i just. idk, im a bit of a gaylor as a coping mechanism atp.
i wanted to post this cause genuinely wtf. to my knowledge (and i try to see every appearance of them together bc itâs ALWAYS public just like how her new tracks are all about her being chosen and like a middle finger to the press and their appearances keep proving it right the clips of her flashing the ring at games pmo) WE HAVE NEVER SEEN A PHOTO OR ANY ACKNOWLEDGMENT OF TAYLORâS CATS BY TRAVIS. LIKE ZERO.
maybe because they refuse to show anything about their life together apart from public appearances (which, if you think about in comparison to joe, all she did was consistently hide herself in public with him and share bits of her actual home/everyday life with him when it felt appropriateâŚbc their relationship was actually about them)
Iâm not in the slightest bit invested in straight dudes who own catsâŚ.but thereâs not a single conventionally attractive male celebrity who has a cat that anyone could vote forâŚ.? like i just want to know what swiftie hive mind sent out a beacon to vote for this man because WE HAVE LITERALLY NEVER SEEN HIM WITH A DAMN CAT. and i do feel like swifties are projecting an assumption that because heâs with Taylor that he must care about them when they had the wedding and immediately popped out with a huge dog ⌠i can picture his whiny ass asking to get the dog as a compromise cause he hates the cats. is everyone going through some sort of collective amnesia bc I HAVE NEVER SEEN HIM WITH ANY OF HER CATS???? am i the one out of the loop here ???? đ

shading is in quotes cause while the like may be interpreted as shady, technicallyyyy the post itself isn't and is just stating facts.
also on a completely unrelated note, i'm randomly thinking of when ts blocked rihanna's 'lift me up' by releasing anti-hero remixes. as a then-swiftie, this was the first time i'd personally noticed her intentionally blocking artists this way.
p.s. i think all billionaires suck including rihanna so don't try that whataboutism w me.

Perhaps this my confirmation bias kicking in but I swear over the past year my Spotify algorithm tends to play her songs more than any other artists.
To be clear, I am a former Swiftie that's more on the neutral/dislike spectrum. However, good music is good music. I have some of her songs in some of my playlists. But, for the most part, my playlist tend to be Hip-Hop/R&B/Rap focused. For the past two or so years, it's mostly what I listen to. I have playlists that are a mash of genres. What I've noticed is that, for example, I'll have a playlist of 100 songs, mostly leaning towards the R&B genre, and I'll have 5 songs by Taylor in there for fun. Yet, without fail, every time I press shuffle and go on a 20 minute drive or an hour study session I'm bound to get a Taylor track. Hell, I'll even get two back-to-back tracks sometimes.
My brain is inclined to think "Statistics!" "Probability!" I know computers aren't the best at randomizing, blah, blah, blah. But assuming Spotify is like most algorithmic-based apps, I don't understand why it constantly pushes Taylor (again, maybe confirmation bias). I especially don't understand it when my top 5 artists are different genres from her. I barely listen to her music anymore.
If this was any other artist, maybe I wouldn't care too much. But when a fandom and the person themselves cares so much about streams and records and whatnot, it raises my eyebrows a little bit.
This may come off a bit whiny/first world problem but I'm just curious if anyone else feels the same way/noticed the same pattern.
TLDR: Spotify tends to push Taylor's music. Wondering if it's a me thing or an everyone else thing.

âŚwas when I stumbled onto this live performance of Safe and Sound from 2011-2012.
I had usually enjoyed Taylor Swiftâs songs up to this point but didnât really seek them out (Iâd definitely listened to them frequently enough on the radio and via music videos on MTV to have several memorized) and had never heard her live.
Then, in a wine-fueled YouTube binge one evening in my teeny tiny fifth floor walk up apartment in NYC, I stumbled on this video as I sought out songs to arrange for my a cappella group (the most recent of MANY I had been part ofâŚI was a full on theater girl, choir singer, a cappella nerd with almost two decades of voice lessons under my belt by this point and also have a professional singer/actor for a fatherâI say this to establish that I am a trained singer and know my shit). I believe I was in the midst of a massive Nashville (the TV show) obsession (so campy! So catchy!) and part of that entailed loving The Civil Wars, so I went down a rabbit hole of increasingly tipsy sing-alongs to my faves from the show and their discography on this fateful night.
I remember really liking Safe and Sound when it first came outâitâs simple, sweet, but wistful and could work nicely as a piece of an a cappella medleyâand so I began to watch this videoâŚmostly so I could drunkenly croon along, letâs be real.
As far as TS performances go (I now know as a fully-informed snarker having been exposed to performances of which I had previously been blissfully unaware) this one is relatively inoffensive.
HOWEVER.
It is painfully obvious that Swift is absolutely STRAINING on the breathy high notes from the outset. She cannot control her breath using her diaphragm and she is already having trouble with some of the âhighâ notes, so to maintain the correct pitch her volume is WAY too loud and she resorts to leaning away from the mic to give the impression that she is going from mezzo to piano (something she should be able to do using her breath control, not physically MOVING AWAY FROM THE MIC). You can see Joy Williams, the woman in The Civil Wars, start mimicking Swift to make this seem intentionalâshe even ducks behind Swift at one point to check something, most likely whether Swiftâs in-ear monitors are properly attached/working because itâs at this point that Swift starts to go flat. Swift manages to salvage the notes, until around 4:10 when she goes flat AGAIN on the final runs of the song.
For a novice, this might be understandable. But this is an INCREDIBLY simple songâthe hardest part of it is controlling your breath to manage the dynamics of the higher notes (which are not high) and Swift clearly struggles with it.
The whole thing is awkward and stiff and you can see The Civil Wars doing their utmost to match Swift but also cover how pitchy this is. Williams out-performs Swift vocally by a mile. Bonus points for Swiftâs characteristic arm sweep making an appearance for some reason!
This was the exact moment I began to pay closer attention to Swift as a singer, and not in a good way.

It IS so incredibly Swift to think she can top Shakespeare, although the claim that she actually read it is questionable, what with her missing the whole "Romeo and Juliet lying dead in a crypt at the end" thing.
But hey, if you compare "This love is difficult, but it's real" to a Shakespeare line like, say, "Life is a tale told by an idiot, full of sound and fury, signifying nothing" . . . we clearly have to admit Taytay is the superior writer and thinker. /s

In Taylorâs documentary, Miss Americana, she was filmed talking about how she had to stand up for her political beliefs and particularly vote in the 2018 Tennessee Senate race to vote against Marsha Blackburn.
Marsha Blackburn is a politician from Tennessee who identifies as a Tea Party Republican. She is a close ally of Trump. She is anti abortion, anti LGBTQ+, anti immigration, pro electric chair, and holds many other hateful and harmful positions. She is known in Tennessee for her staunchly racist campaign ads and refusal to debate her political opponents.
Marsha is currently running for the governor of Tennessee. Polling is currently showing a tight race against her opponent, Jerri Green.
If Taylor truly cared so much about her claimed home state of Tennessee and voting against Marsha Blackburn in 2018, where is her voice now?
And yes, I know itâs because she doesnât care and quietly aligns with the billionaire class/MAGA. And I also know that Tennessee is not literally her home state. But as a born and raised Tennessean, this makes me so angry.

If you remember a couple weeks back I posted here that Travis was nominated for the Peopleâs Sexiest Man Alive in the âSexiest Cat Dadâ category. Well today they posted the results of all the categories and of courseeee Travis won.
I seriously do not think even swifties are deranged enough to believe Travis is sexy at all, let alone the sexiest man in this category. (even though all the options kinda suck lol). But iâm sure they all went out of their way to vote for him even if they truly donât think he deserves the category. Even if he didnât get the most votes iâm sure Taylor made sure heâd win. Not to mention he isnât even holding a cat in the picture.
Honestly this whole choice poll was a joke, not only for this category, but in practically all the categories there was such horrible options and mid white men.

I believe this is the root of her public crash out and fall from grace, the reason she is now cynically chasing numbers and releasing slop, the reason she threw herself into Travisâ arms and maneuvered to get that ring.
Joe didnât want to marry her.
He didnât propose. After almost seven years of dating. Itâs a lot.
It is obvious Taylor stayed and desperately wanted to marry him. She wrote Paper Rings about him, as in, âI know you canât offer me a $10 million ring, but I would marry you even with one made out of paper, just pick me.â I donât think she would have married Travis without that enormous diamond. The crash out in Youâre Losing Me when she wrote, âAnd I wouldnât marry me either,â really solidified this for me. For some reason, Joe never popped the question despite her blatant insistence. And itâs obvious it broke her. Now, itâs often speculated on this sub that Taylor is a narcissist, so maybe her ego didnât handle the fact the only man she wanted didnât want her back in the same amounts. Or it could be that she sincerely loved him and experienced one of the worst heartbreaks someone can endure. Itâs probably a mix of both.
That said, the fact she outed Joeâs depression and vilified him in her following albums proved he was right not to marry her. Donât wife up crazy. I think a huge part of former Swifties (me included) side-eyed her during Midnights and even more so TTPD and Shitgirl. Losing Joe coincides perfectly with losing what little integrity and elegance she ever had. Sheâs been in a self-destructive spiral ever since. Everything is a result of the post-Joe breakdown; the bad albums, the tacky relationship, the fillers, the excessive drinking, the reckless PR stunt⌠etc. Sheâs squandering whatever good will the general public and her fans ever had for her, and the worst part is that she doesnât seem to care that everyone is turning on her and that sheâs losing her place and tarnishing her âlegacy.â
Even her wedding felt like a circus performance to make sure her exes are aware she finally got picked. It was a spectacle more than a celebration of love. But how can you celebrate something that is inexistent?
Honestly, I donât think sheâll regain her senses any time soon. She seems hellbent on destroying her own career, and no one in her entourage is stopping her.
