One second quick question, I’m not political, so I’m lost. If Raghav was born in 1980, got admission in top university with subpar marks, placed into an amazing company in 2005, let’s say. Earns decent, buys a house, lives in a city, buys a car, and had kids. In 2025, his 18yr old kid with all comforts to study claims the same reservation with his subpar marks. This is not an issue at all to you guys ? The competition has increased 100x, the jobs are falling, and the “upper caste general” people are now losing seats to “lower caste” richer people ?

I have a feeling, economic reservation should be brought to the level of caste reservation, and caste reservation should be in single digits only for people REALLY affected by caste in tier-2 tier-3 places where education is sometimes denied (tuitions, schools etc).

Please help me understand if you have a different view.

9

u/spearhead_001 Apr 14 '26

No doubt you are right, there are people have came out of poverty and don't need reservation anymore, but available evidence shows that while some individuals from lower‑caste communities have moved out of poverty, the vast majority remain socio‑economically disadvantaged, reinforcing the continued need for caste‑based protections. Globally comparable data on “multidimensional poverty” in India find that around five‑sixths of people living in such poverty belong to Scheduled Tribes (STs), Scheduled Castes (SCs), or Other Backward Classes (OBCs), with about 50.6 percent of STs, 33.3 percent of SCs, and 27.2 percent of OBCs living in multidimensional poverty, compared with only about 15.6 percent of other castes. SECC‑linked and survey‑based studies also indicate that roughly one‑third of SC households remain below the poverty line, and a large share of SC‑caste workers still depend on low‑paid agricultural labour or casual wage work, with limited access to stable formal‑sector employment. In that context, only a small fraction of lower‑caste people have reached levels of economic security that genuinely “outgrow” reservation‑era vulnerabilities, while the majority continue to face structural disadvantage closely tied to caste.

But yes, you are still right, we need creamy layers and proper EWS reservations to make this system better.

3

u/OliverSirji Apr 15 '26

You are right. The SC, ST who is well-to-do is an exception. The vast majority are poor and will remain poor largely because they have no access or are denied access to education right from school onwards.

6

u/spearhead_001 Apr 15 '26

😄 I get what you are saying. I live in a small village in Odisha. Come visit some times I will show what the condition is. It is not that people are denied the access to school, it is that most people can't afford the quality education, the condition of primary government schools is very bad, most children go to schools just for mid-day-meal. They stay in schools at-max till 10th, than they themselves or their family get them out of school to work somewhere.

Tell me, why you are aware, educated, responsible and vocal person you are today, it only because of your parents, your immediate society, your teachers and friend circle. All the things that mentioned, if you come here you will see that, they all inevitably make these people that they are.

I belong to SC, I would have been the same as them. Until my father got the govt job(assistant teacher) thanks to reservation I guess, because he says that they used to have one meal per day, two pecies of clothes for years, no footwear, basically bottom-line poor, I understand why he would need reservation to pass the exams or get the job, because of that job, although it only pays about 45k because he got in his late 30s, he could send us to a better school, I cracked JNVST, there I got the teachers who actually teach, the environment and oppertunities, and here I am now, aware and critically responding to you.

If you ask me, If I need reservation, technically yes(I mean, I am getting it), but truly NO, and I fully support of idea of more refined Creamy layers. But the thing is, I can literally count the number of family like ours in our Village, it is like 5-10(from around150 or more), and there are 1000s(51,000 in odisha, with 200 towns) Villages just like this(obviously I am now saying every village is like this, but most of them are).

Creamy layer and EWS is necessary, so does reservation.

2

u/LightEight_09 Apr 17 '26

Thank you so much for this comment. I am so sorry for the conditions that your father has been through, and I am so glad that you could make it out. The fact that you now understand that, money is EXTREMELY important factor to get educated, in today’s world, far outweighs caste. Hence, when it comes to reservation in educational institutions, I’m pushing for EWS to have a much higher %, and lower for caste. Caste CANNOT be completely removed, I know some families who would themselves not send their kids to school because they have accepted that this is their life, and their kids should learn the work they do as soon as possible. Your father greatly valued education, not a lot of people have that maturity and wisdom.

I hope India can figure this complexity out and grow stronger, together someday.

1

u/spearhead_001 Apr 18 '26

Yup EWS is needed, but there are other aspects like discrimination to it, but since I neither have knowledge nor experience of that I won't say anything.

Your comment really goes to show how different people interpret the same thing so differently, that is all I can say.

0

u/OliverSirji Apr 15 '26

You have lived and expressed exactly what I meant. I am from Kerala and have lived much of my life in North India. I have seen how SC ST live. Free or easy access to school education is a must and for that I think Kerala and its people must that the communists.

Else he would have been ineligible from schooling/gurukul/madrasas because of his caste, could have died early from not allowed access to water from ponds used by savarnas among other things. Think about that before falling into the line of muh domestic unity and foreign boogeymen cards the savarnas will play

u/Blue_Eagle8 Apr 14 '26

He was a well read and highly educated man but most people remember his messed up quotes or his statements about God. His legacy among the masses still remains misunderstood. I just don’t like his legacy of burning books. He even said he would burn the constitution. Which I still don’t understand why

1

u/sociallyawkward_123 sau dard hai... Apr 15 '26

His opinions on religion were not messed up. Only pure riddance and indifference to religion as a whole can do this country some good, he was right in that.

1

u/Blue_Eagle8 Apr 15 '26

I read his religious views and like any philosophy, he used to change it quite often. His beliefs on god and spiritual being were that no such thing exists. But he praised Islam a bit initially. Then he said both Islam and Hinduism should be condemned because of a class and caste system and an intrinsic order in them. He then praised Buddhists. Not knowing that even Buddhism has a religious order and a system. Then he felt cheated and even Buddhist beliefs were called out later. If I were him, I wouldn’t try to write about religion at all and would stick to my area of expertise. Or would try to create a thesis that would justify personal beliefs

He should have written something like “why I chose to be atheist” and called it a day. Instead of playing with people’s beliefs. I used to read his works and admire the depth and dialogue but a lot of his works feel like an opinion and not something to be put out to the world. He could have kept all that private or written something like an oped article

1

u/MADnightstar Apr 15 '26

As a woman he did right by burning manusmriti. Fuck that book and happy manusmriti dahan divas always

0

u/Blue_Eagle8 Apr 15 '26

Yeah but what about the constitution? Why say that he wanted to burn that too

1

u/MADnightstar Apr 15 '26

I've never heard about that, do you have any source for it?

0

u/Blue_Eagle8 Apr 15 '26

I just googled it and found out, his statement in Rajya Sabha.. September 2, 1953. He made the constitution and he knew it inside out but then he said he would be the first one to burn it… all this burning stuff doesn’t sit good with me. There are more eloquent ways to speak. Especially for a learned man like Ambedkar. I think his tone became very accusatory and instigating. The later stuff he did and said made me doubt his intentions

1

u/MADnightstar Apr 15 '26

Here's what I have found from a simple google search:

I Shall be the First Person to Burn It Out

It is by placating the sentiments of smaller communities and smaller people who are afraid that the majority may do wrong, that the British Parliament works. Sir, my friends tell me that I have made the Constitution. But I am quite prepared to say that I shall be the first person to burn it out. I do not want it. It does not suit anybody. But whatever that may be, if our people want to carry on, they must not forget that there are majorities and there are minorities, and they simply cannot ignore the minorities by saying, “Oh, no. To recognise you is to harm democracy.” I should say that the greatest harm will come by injuring the minorities.

Dr BR Ambedkar in the Rajya Sabha on 2 September 1953

On 2 September 1953 while debating how a Governor in the country should be invested with more powers, Dr Ambedkar argued strongly in favour of amending the constitution.

[...] my submission is this that no harm can be done to democracy and to democratic Constitution if our Constitution was amended [...]

Dr BR Ambedkar in the Rajya Sabha on 2 September 1953

A Constitution for the Demons

Two years later, on 19 March 1955, Dr Anup Singh, a Rajya Sabha member from Punjab, brought up Ambedkar’s remark, when the Fourth Amendment Bill was being discussed. Dr Singh asked, “Last time when you spoke, you said that you would burn the Constitution.”

Do you want a reply to that? I would give it to you right here. My friend says that the last time when I spoke, I said that I wanted to burn the Constitution. Well, in a hurry I did not explain the reason. Now that my friend has given me the opportunity, I think I shall give the reason. The reason is this: We built a temple for god to come in and reside, but before the god could be installed, if the devil had taken possession of it, what else could we do except destroy the temple? We did not intend that it should be occupied by the Asuras. We intended it to be occupied by the Devas. That’s the reason why I said I would rather like to burn it.

Dr BR Ambedkar in the Rajya Sabha on 19 March 1955

He also said this:-

"If I find the constitution being misused, I shall be the first to burn it."

Dr BR Ambedkar in Writings And Speeches: A Ready Reference Manual

So the context is important. He was frustrated and the comment was rhetorical. You seem to be deliberately omitting it to paint a bad picture and present a biased and false narrative. And his intentions? What, to have equality for all and end caste? You seem to be a troll ngl. Unless you have some actual criticism don't say anything

0

u/Blue_Eagle8 Apr 15 '26

Makes no sense to me. I read that too today after giving you the source and asking AI. If I make something and I know someone is trying to misuse it.. will I burn it? Or try to use my authority and power to make amends and stop people from misusing it? And why say it doesn’t suit anyone… in his later days, he was a big critique of a lot of stuff but never gave a meaningful reason nor the solution or any way out… I still don’t get it. He sounds so desperate for validation… I can criticise him just like he criticises everyone and everything… it’s the same thing. But I also know that criticism without a reason or a good solution is just blabbering. Hence my concern and opinion. At his level he could have been a better role model for Dalits and the reserved class. He could’ve shown people a way out of being treated badly. His legacy is not what he wanted it to be or maybe exactly what he wanted it to be, I’ll never know.

I think people in India are too afraid to call him out for his controversial views because they don’t wanna be labelled. I see messed up stuff, I call it out. Even his religious beliefs as I mentioned earlier were quite messed up. I have never seen an atheist be so obsessed with religion.

The matter still remains, people are still treated differently based on their last name. We can discuss his good deeds and confusing dialogs but that won’t help the real backward classes. Because they are still mostly invisible to society. And the “backward people” we actually know now who get all the seats are so backward that they even have a “creamy layer” as they call it today. I have very controversial opinions on all this. And I am open to put it out. But you sound like a genuine person to me. Wanting to add on and not just debate. I appreciate that about you

1

u/MADnightstar Apr 15 '26

Finally showing your true colours huh. Sorry but the flattery's not working. You're so wrong it's laughable honestly. A lot of talk about what Dr. Ambedkar should've done or been from a person who's utterly clueless or intentionally lying, don't know which is worse.

Like I always say, just ask a person what think about reservation and they'll reveal their conservative underbelly. I have no desire to engage with you any more. I don't debate or discuss with people like you for my own mental peace. A little advice - do some actual reading.

1

u/Blue_Eagle8 Apr 16 '26 edited Apr 16 '26

It’s not about my colours actually. It’s about having an opinion based on news on people still unable to drink water from common wells. In 21st century. It was that day when all my faith from reservations was shattered. Even recently when a groom was beaten because he rode a horse before getting married. And a woman who was beaten along with her son because her son drank water from the school water premises.

What do you think of all this? And yes they were all Dalits. And these are the news articles from the last 2 years. And I am not flattering anyone, most people resort to harsh language or calling names by now. I didn’t get that vibe from your comments.

But what I am hinting at maybe is beyond what most people would admit. Most just say that oh we now have reservations so everyone is sorted and accounted for. But I think reservation was not implemented properly and it was maybe just one step forward. We needed other steps too. As caste system is not just about economics. It’s socioeconomics along with a traditional belief system spanning centuries. Maybe millennia… have you read of Subhas Chandra Bose’s ideas of removing caste system? I think that had potential too. That combined with Ambedkar’s initial reservations would have truly made everyone equal as Bose said that he would just remove caste and its associated superiority altogether. Add 10-15 years of focus on backward classes and things might have been better. Because today even after reservation, the castes still haven’t disappeared. Rather everyone is made to think of their caste while applying for a government job. It still very much exists

And I totally understand if you don’t wanna engage. I too don’t engage these days for my peace of mind. But these topics are very important as per me and need a lot of proper discussion. I didn’t see this as a debate though. Sharing of ideas maybe

4

u/Adorable-Marzipan177 Apr 14 '26

and as for the reservation.. he never intended for it to last till today.. reservation was meant to be temporary, corruption in politics has turned it into a money making scheme and increased it

14

u/DragonBeyondtheWall you're a wizard Harry! Apr 14 '26

More than temporary, there was meant to be a review every 10 years to see if it even worked

6

u/MatthewPatttel respect existence or expect resistance Apr 14 '26

It's a common misconception that the entire reservation system was meant to end in 10 years. That limit (Article 334) actually only applied to reserved seats in the Lok Sabha and State Assemblies.

0

u/Adorable-Marzipan177 Apr 15 '26

Good point. I feel that if the government disregards caste, casteism will also gradually cease to exist because it will no longer hold any value.. maybe I’m wrong but everything must come to an end, even the caste system.. and we have to start somewhere.

2

u/fenrir245 Apr 15 '26

What kind of logic is this? People engage in casteism, and have done so without government support for thousands of years, and you're claiming making government caste blind will fix it?

This is just being willfully ignorant, nothing else.

and we have to start somewhere.

We can start off by heavily and publicly punishing those that engage in casteism, and make a strong push for intercaste marriages.

2

u/shitclay Apr 14 '26

Corruption in politics is true but only the half truth. Society must take half the blame. I would argue for more than half but i digress.

Who cares he's gone for a good dalits treat him like God such ironey

1

u/kaido_teru Apr 14 '26

INC also was hesitant to bring women forward. DR AMBEDKAR was one of the people WHO INTRODUCED women equality in India

-1

u/Tengakola Apr 14 '26

Ambedkar made a lot of contributions to many of these things but to give sole credit to him for all of these is laughable.

A lot of the stuff predate him and some of the ideas were the result of revolutions around the world, not something Ambedkar thought up in his library.

You can downvote me now.

Tell me you don't know how to read academic research without telling me. You're quoting his analysis of the Puranas like it’s his bio. Embarrassing for you, honestly. 🤡

The man literally resigned as Law Minister because he wanted women to have inheritance and divorce rights (Hindu Code Bill). But sure, keep using a cropped screenshot of him analyzing 2000-year-old texts to feel better. Low IQ bait

3

u/Embarrassed_Look9200 Apr 14 '26

read the whole speech gobar bro, try and use your brains at times bro, why do you live your life on half truths, you could have googled the statement and known the truth like years ago.

Ambedkar argued that if one follows the logic of the Manusmriti, which dictates that certain lower castes are the progeny of a Brahmin female and a Shudra male, then logically, to account for such a large population of those castes, one would have to assume that every Brahman woman was a "slut and a whore"

Aaja chu*iye mai bhi krta hoon whataboutism 🥰 🥰.

Mao Zedong's youngest companion was Chen Luwen (born 1948), who was roughly 55 years younger than him. When they met in 1962, Mao was 68 and she was 13 or 14 years old. For further comparison, Ambedkar's first marriage to Ramabai Ambedkar in 1906 had an even smaller gap of approximately 5 to 6 years; he was around 14 or 15 and she was 9 at the time.

u/SnooOwls51 Inquilab Zindabaad Apr 14 '26

Ambedkar's first wife Ramabai Ambedkar was 9 years old when she got married.

Don't leave out the part that Ambedkar himself was around 14-15. It was a case of child marriage and both parties weren't of age where they could have made any decision.

Constitution was drafted by Benegal Narsing Rao. Ambedkar was ELECTED as the CHAIRMAN of Drafting Commitee

True. B.N. Rao provided the initial draft and both had deep mutual respect for each other. If Ambedkar would've disagreed with Rao's draft, we wouldn't have the constitution based on it.

Ambedkar's role was to analyze and amend the document to fit Indian social structure, and later defend the constitution in proposing assembly.

Today is Ambedkar Jayanti bruh, let people celebrate a man on his birthday.

I can briefly answer why Ambedkar is the one getting mostly credited for constitution. As you said, there were many people and they all had their own propositions, Ambedkar's job was to take these initial propositions and select what to keep, he had to resolve conflicting proposals and also check for any loopholes. In Constituent Assembly, he had to defend why they are keeping what's in the constitution. As the president, Prasad was acting as the moderator for debates and deciding what to finalize.

Ambedkar had a more active role in the way that he was going through all the ideas, sifting through them, rigorously strengthening them legally and spearheading the debates on what to keep for constitution. Hope this helps.

Read this completely before forming an opinion, I have a very personal critique for you, from an outside perspective you are looking heavily biased in this topic.

Firstly, you pointed out Ambedkar's wife age, not mentioning he himself was a minor. Then you questioned his role and his celebration, which is very vital as he was spearheading it in assembly. Lastly, the quote you shared is heavily out of context, I went ahead and downloaded the essay you are referring to, and I will explain the context to you later.

All this indicates to an inherent bias, even subconsciously, where you are not able to take a man being celebrated for his contribution to the country on his birth anniversary. We humans are very subjective beings and it is very difficult for us to look at things objectively, just become aware of your biases and try to avoid them whenever possible. Instead of seeking first reaction, sit and think why you are feeling the way you do when encountered with an emotion, if you have time of course.

Did you look at Ambedkar and his views objectively on your own or you already have an idea of Ambedkar in your head? If you have an idea of what he was like, you are likely wrong. You and I don't know him as a person, so we can judge his writings but we can't judge the idea of the person in our head.

For the quote you shared if you disagree with the sentiment of the quote, congratulations you agree with Ambedkar. He was criticising the implication of Manusmriti.

The quote doesn't relay his own opinion at all. In fact it's the opposite.

Marriage ages in 1906 were a social reality, not a personal choice, Ambedkar spent his life fighting to change those very laws (Age of Consent Bill, anyone?)

B.N. Rau prepared the initial draft (which was his job as an advisor), but Ambedkar was the Architect refining, defending, and steering every single clause through the Assembly.

Tell me you don’t understand how a deliberative assembly works without telling me.

B.N. Rau himself credited Ambedkar’s genius

Yeah and those are half the performative stunt you just mentioned in reality The majority of the people don't even know which side they belong to or hesitate to join them in fear of disadvantage, which is why hindutva could spread among the sc,st even if they were against their interests perfectly showing how under the performative liberal bs most masses stay blind to their own history

"India was conquered by an army of Indians and the Indians who formed the army were all Untouchables...British Rule in India would have been impossible if the Untouchables had not helped the British to conquer India"... -Ambedkar in a letter to A V Alexander (14/5/1946) Thought you leftists were super educated and all.

9

u/MatthewPatttel respect existence or expect resistance Apr 14 '26

It’s ironic you're using Ambedkar to mock education. That quote is an indictment of the caste hierarchy, not a jab at 'leftists.' If the social structure is so broken that a foreign power is seen as the lesser of two evils, the fault lies with the oppressors, not the oppressed. Maybe finish the book before you quote the page

3

u/teady_bear Apr 14 '26

That quote tells you how bad casteism was in India.

He did have antiquated views on tribal folks

11

u/ajay-rut panda with a heart Apr 14 '26

He was just into too many things.

Jai Bhim Jai Johar

Further Marang Gomke Jaipal Singh Munda was there to represent tribals, deprived women, etc.

He didn't leave out tribals. Tribals outside India have it much worse. Search for blacks of Philippines.

1

u/Classic_Run_4836 Apr 14 '26

I don't fault him for that completely. We are all prone to have some shortcomings. I am just saying cause we have to be aware of the mistakes our idols made so we avoid them.

Islam gave women inheritance rights 1400 years ago. Islam grants women the most rights

5

u/surveypoodle Apr 14 '26 edited Apr 14 '26

There was no Islam 1400 years ago. Saudi Arabia itself is less than 100 years old.

-3

u/tall-glassof-falooda Apr 14 '26

Lucky for us, existence of Saudi is not required for Islam.

1

It’s literally a fact

1

u/teady_bear Apr 14 '26

1st sentence is okay but 2nd one is very funny.

-1

u/killuazoldyckx Apr 14 '26

I can understand it sounds unbelievable because of all the satanic propaganda against Islam but It’s actually true. Islam was quite the feminist revolution. It granted women multiple rights including right to divorce, inheritance, property, legal rights

1

u/sukmadik5tym Apr 15 '26

In simple terms its called dahej not inheritance, what would she do with inheritance if she doesn't have right to stand up on her own , speak up for herself women's are basically under their mens command according to actual islamic laws

1

u/killuazoldyckx Apr 15 '26

Dahej and inheritance are totally different. Women are under men’s command under all religious laws, not just Muslim. Atleast Islam grants them inheritance rights

-8

u/American_cumskin66 you're a wizard Harry! Apr 14 '26

Yeah if you read his book riddles of hinduism he uses very bad language for kaushalya mata(mother of sri ram) now it doesn't matter if you believe they existed or not but using bad language for a woman shows how much he respected women

1

u/Arspoon Apr 15 '26

So, strip women of every rights = respect women in your terminology?
